Book Synopsis Game-changing Strategies Leading African American Family Businesses to Build Legacy and Transgenerational Wealth by : Gloria Carney Shealey
Download or read book Game-changing Strategies Leading African American Family Businesses to Build Legacy and Transgenerational Wealth written by Gloria Carney Shealey and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior family business research has advanced several explanations, insights, and empirical data for why African American businesses are not successful or lag behind but leaves a key imperative unexplored: game-changing strategies of successful African American family-owned businesses (AAFOB). African Americans have a long history of entrepreneurship despite the legacy of slavery and discrimination. By studying four successful AAFOB in distinctively differing industries that have achieved generational transition and wealth capture, the author developed a theoretical concept model for addressing the following question: How do successful AAFOB build generational wealth and advance succession transcending complex historical constraints? Like all family businesses, AAFOB engage in entrepreneurial activity and relationship building to create access to opportunity, resources, capital, and talent. The findings reveal that the difference lies in the relationship-building strategies for inclusion, wealth building, and succession readiness that are game changing for participation and require exceptional motivational attributes to rise above constraints and build bridges into exclusionary and other business networks to belong, be known, and trusted as a pathway for success. These findings provide evidenced-based practices that prescribe a process to build transgenerational wealth and advance succession that is cyclical. The study offers a discovery of novel approaches to family business entrepreneurship theory as a contribution to academic literature and practitioner work towards economic parity.

Book excerpt: From his unique executive-level position at a Fortune 100 Company for almost two decades, Eugene Mitchell observed how other races, religions and ethnic groups use financial tools and strategies in ways that significantly advanced their communities. Many of these concepts were vastly different to those being employed in African-American communities, because of a difference in implementation and access. With that in mind, Eugene initiated and completed one of his highest celebrated corporate accomplishments-the $50 Billion Empowerment Plan for creating Black wealth in America. The initiative amassed $50 Billion of income protection and future income for over 340,000 Black families, using life insurance as the foundational asset. In this book Eugene Mitchell shares the "7 Untold Rules," that everyone can apply, to create financial prosperity and an intergenerational legacy. Join Eugene in this movement toward your financial empowerment and a collective community transformation.
Book Synopsis The Hidden Cost of Being African American by : Thomas M. Shapiro
Download or read book The Hidden Cost of Being African American written by Thomas M. Shapiro and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past three decades, racial prejudice in America has declined significantly and many African American families have seen a steady rise in employment and annual income. But alongside these encouraging signs, Thomas Shapiro argues in The Hidden Cost of Being African American, fundamental levels of racial inequality persist, particularly in the area of asset accumulation--inheritance, savings accounts, stocks, bonds, home equity, and other investments-. Shapiro reveals how the lack of these family assets along with continuing racial discrimination in crucial areas like homeownership dramatically impact the everyday lives of many black families, reversing gains earned in schools and on jobs, and perpetuating the cycle of poverty in which far too many find themselves trapped. Shapiro uses a combination of in-depth interviews with almost 200 families from Los Angeles, Boston, and St. Louis, and national survey data with 10,000 families to show how racial inequality is transmitted across generations. We see how those families with private wealth are able to move up from generation to generation, relocating to safer communities with better schools and passing along the accompanying advantages to their children. At the same time those without significant wealth remain trapped in communities that don't allow them to move up, no matter how hard they work. Shapiro challenges white middle class families to consider how the privileges that wealth brings not only improve their own chances but also hold back people who don't have them. This "wealthfare" is a legacy of inequality that, if unchanged, will project social injustice far into the future. Showing that over half of black families fall below the asset poverty line at the beginning of the new century, The Hidden Cost of Being African American will challenge all Americans to reconsider what must be done to end racial inequality.
