Book excerpt: The U.S. has 26 agreements in force for peaceful nuclear cooperation. Under the U.S. Atomic Energy Act of 1954 these agreements are a prerequisite to certain aspects of U.S. nuclear cooperation with other cooperating partners. This report: (1) quantifies the amount and value of U.S. nuclear exports facilitated by these agreements; (2) assesses U.S. efforts to support the U.S. nuclear industry's ability to compete for sales; and (3) examines U.S. nuclear industry challenges to exporting. To conduct this work, the report reviewed and assessed data collection efforts by U.S. agencies from 1994 through 2008, and interviewed U.S. industry rep. and U.S. and foreign gov't. officials. Book Synopsis Arms Races by : Nils Petter Gleditsch
Download or read book Arms Races written by Nils Petter Gleditsch and published by SAGE Publications Limited. This book was released on 1990-02 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A long tradition of theoretical and empirical work has been devoted to the question of the driving forces in the arms race since the 1960s. This book takes up the internal factors of arms dynamics, such as bureaucratic politics, interservice rivalry, and the military-industrial complex, as well as external factors such as interactive arms dynamics between the two superpowers. It also deals with the question of technological determinism - the ideas that what is technically possible will be done as opposed to the idea that `politics is in command'. Finally, factors in the international system affecting arms races are also examined, such as long economic waves and power transitions.

Book Synopsis Atomic Assistance by : Matthew Fuhrmann
Download or read book Atomic Assistance written by Matthew Fuhrmann and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-11 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear technology is dual use in nature, meaning that it can be used to produce nuclear energy or to build nuclear weapons. Despite security concerns about proliferation, the United States and other nuclear nations have regularly shared with other countries nuclear technology, materials, and knowledge for peaceful purposes. In Atomic Assistance, Matthew Fuhrmann argues that governments use peaceful nuclear assistance as a tool of economic statecraft. Nuclear suppliers hope that they can reap the benefits of foreign aid-improving relationships with their allies, limiting the influence of their adversaries, enhancing their energy security by gaining favorable access to oil supplies-without undermining their security. By providing peaceful nuclear assistance, however, countries inadvertently help spread nuclear weapons. Fuhrmann draws on several cases of "Atoms for Peace," including U.S. civilian nuclear assistance to Iran from 1957 to 1979; Soviet aid to Libya from 1975 to 1986; French, Italian, and Brazilian nuclear exports to Iraq from 1975 to 1981; and U.S. nuclear cooperation with India from 2001 to 2008. He also explores decision making in countries such as Japan, North Korea, Pakistan, South Africa, and Syria to determine why states began (or did not begin) nuclear weapons programs and why some programs succeeded while others failed. Fuhrmann concludes that, on average, countries receiving higher levels of peaceful nuclear assistance are more likely to pursue and acquire the bomb-especially if they experience an international crisis after receiving aid.
Book Synopsis Routledge Handbook of Nuclear Proliferation and Policy by : Joseph F. Pilat
Download or read book Routledge Handbook of Nuclear Proliferation and Policy written by Joseph F. Pilat and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new Handbook is a comprehensive examination of the rich and complex issues of nuclear proliferation in the early 21st century. The future of the decades-long effort to prevent the further spread of weapons of mass destruction is at a crossroads today. If international nonproliferation efforts are to be successful, an integrated, multi-tiered response will almost certainly be necessary. A serious, thorough, and clear-eyed examination of the range of threats, challenges, and opportunities facing the international community is a necessary first step. This Handbook, which presents the most up-to-date analysis and policy recommendations on these critical issues by recognized, leading scholars in the field, intends to provide such an examination. The volume is divided into three major parts: Part I presents detailed threat assessments of proliferation risks across the globe, including specific regions and countries. Part II explains the various tools developed by the international community to address these proliferation threats. Part III addresses the proliferation risks and political challenges arising from nuclear energy production, including potential proliferation by aspiring states and nonstate groups. This Handbook will be of great interest to students and practitioners of nuclear proliferation, arms control, global governance, diplomacy, and global security and IR general.
