The contributions fall into five sections: 1) keynote addresses from plenary speakers; 2) innovative challenges for language centres; 3) new developments in teaching language for specific purposes; 4) proposals and case studies in Content and Language Integrated Learning; and 5) the use of new technologies in language learning. 18 papers are in English, four in Italian, one in French and one in German. The fact that three-quarters of the papers are in English reflects the way English has become the lingua franca of academic conferences today. However, in keeping with the ethos of CercleS (Confédération Européenne des Centres de Langues de l’Enseignement Supérieur, the pan-European organisation to which AICLU belongs), which is strongly committed to promoting plurilingualism, it was crucial that contributions would also be accepted in other languages. This goes hand in hand with a growing interest for local communities’ involvement in heritage management plans. Although this shift in discourse is acknowledged, its practical implementation seems often too ambitious and not easy to apply. Therefore, the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation (RLICC, University of Leuven) considered “community participation in valuing and managing heritage” a relevant and timely topic for its annual international conference, the “Thematic Week”. This volume reports on the lectures and fruitful debates dedicated to this theme during the 2014 Thematic Week, which took place January 22nd-24th. The conference entailed an integral and holistic approach towards community participation. Focusing traditionally on the conservation of the historic urban environment and immovable heritage, the RLICC took the opportunity to involve both the intangible and movable heritage fields which have a more apparent relation with community participation in managing heritage. The contributions by different international authors, including theoretical reflections, policy / discourse analyses and practical case studies, show that a balanced approach is needed. They evidence that more research is required on the success and on failure factors associated with community participation in heritage preservation and management projects. It appears that taking full advantage of public participation requires considering heritage as an economic, social and intellectual resource for local communities. These added benefits can enhance the value a community attributes to heritage and encourages them to maintain it. This publication was developed in context of the UNESCO Chair on Preventive Conservation, Monitoring and Maintenance of Monuments and Sites (PRECOM3OS), established at the RLICC in collaboration with Monumentenwacht Vlaanderen and the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Cuenca in Ecuador and financially supported by the Janssen Fund for Preventive Conservation.

Book excerpt: Il volume correda un breve percorso espositivo a pannelli (testi e immagini) per presentare i risultati delle ricerche e degli scavi svolti dal 2011 ad oggi nel sito archeologico ‘Antiche Mura’ di Jesolo. ‘In limine’ è una poesia di Eugenio Montale (introduce la raccolta “Ossi di Seppia”). Il titolo, e la poesia stessa, sono sembrati pertinenti a sintetizzare il senso del progetto archeologico sull’antica Equilo, di cui si pubblicano in questo volume i primi risultati. ‘In limine’ significa ‘sulla soglia’: indica cioè un punto di passaggio, un confine; e, nel nostro caso, metaforicamente rimarca il discrimine tra passato e presente, il luogo archeologico dove la materia inerte diviene narrazione. Qui, in limine, è anche uno spazio fisico preciso, quello dell’area delle ‘Antiche Mura’, luogo anche tangibile della memoria collettiva. Un luogo, ieri come oggi, ai margini. Se l’antica Equilo era stato un insediamento sul confine instabile tra mare e laguna, la moderna Jesolo, che ne ha ereditato il nome, ha lasciato che i ruderi della sua memoria restassero al di fuori del centro abitato: nel punto dove la città diventa campagna, lì sorgono le rovine dell’antica cattedrale, lì rimane il reliquiario della comunità, come una sorta di giardino ‘dove affonda un morto viluppo di memorie’ (di nuovo Montale). Gli archeologi hanno cercato nel tempo di recuperare quelle memorie e quel passato, con pazienza e fatica. Così, il progetto nato qualche anno fa per iniziativa del Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici dell’Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia, non costituisce che l’ultimo atto di un percorso che ha inizio dalla metà del secolo scorso, con gli scavi nell’area della cattedrale e nel vicino sito della chiesa di San Mauro. I contributi che si pubblicano in questa circostanza raccontano e sintetizzano i risultati degli ultimi anni di scavi. L’interconnessione tra le varie strategie di indagine ci ha consentito di proporre una ricostruzione storico-insediativa del sito del tutto inedita e sorprendente.
