Book excerpt: During the 60s, the Eustis Directorate of the U.S. Army Air Mobility Research and Development Laboratory contracted with the Aviation Crash Injury Research (AvCIR) Group of the Flight Safety Foundation to define the Army aircraft crash environment and development design concepts and criteria to reduce injuries. For this study, the group investigated many accidents involving U.S. Army utility helicopters, conducted full-scale aircraft crash tests, evaluated aircraft crashworthiness, and developed crashworthiness design concepts. The examination showed that injuries, fatalities, and aircraft damage could have been reduced by improved design. The results were presented in USAAMRDL Technical Report 71-22, "Crash Survival Design Guide," which defines the hazards encountered in typical helicopter crashes. That document was used from the outset in design of the U.S. Army/Sikorsky UH-60A advanced utility helicopter with the objective of achieving an exceptional level of crashworthiness. To give some indication of the effectiveness of the crashworthy design achieved, we considered a fleet of 1,000 aircraft operating an average of 900 hours per aircraft per year. Our very conservative estimate shows that in 10 years of operation, 80 serious injuries could have been prevented and 200 lives saved. The crashworthy fuel system and crashworthy energy-absorbing landing gear and structure could save $58 million in material costs - $22 million saved by the fuel system and $36 million saved by the landing gear and structure. In addition, savings in personnel training and replacement would bring the estimated total savings to $78 million.

Book Synopsis Investigation of the Crash-Impact Characteristics of Advanced Airframe Structures by :
Download or read book Investigation of the Crash-Impact Characteristics of Advanced Airframe Structures written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this program was to investigate the crash-impact characteristics of advanced troop transport helicopter airframe structures constructed of composite materials. Currently available information was surveyed on the crash-impact behavior of composite materials, analytical tools for design of crashworthy airframe structures, and airframe structure crashworthiness design criteria. Information on the crash-impact behavior of composite materials was found to be limited. Automotive studies showed that by innovative design, composite materials could function efficiently as energy absorbers to reduce crash-impact loads. Other pertinent studies were found that are currently in progress at Bell Helicopter Textron, the NASA Langley Research Center and the U.S. Army's Research and Technology Laboratories and are summarized. Finally, effects of composite materials on the compliance of airframe structures with current Army crashworthiness requirements are discussed.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is generally agreed that it is desirable to provide modern military helicopters with the maximum crashworthiness practical in order to reduce injury in helicopter crashes. Although crashworthy design features have been proven to be extremely effective in reducing morbidity and mortality, a penalty of increased weight and added procurement cost must be paid. Consequently, the degree of crashworthiness designed into an aircraft must be a tradeoff between economics, aircraft performance, and the perceived risk of injury. To help these judgments, it would be useful to develop a mathematical model capable of predicting morbidity outcomes for a given aircraft design. All crashes of five types of U.S. Army helicopters occurring between 1 October 1979 and 30 September 1991 were examined to determine crash conditions and morbidity and mortality outcomes. Analyses were conducted with logistic regression (LOGISTIC) for mortality and the fit of the model was considered.

Book Synopsis Aircraft Crashworthiness by : Richard F. Chandler
Download or read book Aircraft Crashworthiness written by Richard F. Chandler and published by SAE International. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although isolated examples of crashworthiness can be found in aircraft which pre-date the designs of the Wright brothers, the first crashworthiness research project was undertaken in 1942 at Cornell University Medical College. The study investigated aircraft crashes to determine the causes of injuries and supported a development program for improving crashworthy design. The aviation industry quickly applied the results of the study, and by the early 1950s, crashworthy design features were incorporated into several airplanes. However, lack of consumer interest forced many of these designs to be dropped. In the 60s and 70s, most of the crashworthiness research pertained to military helicopter design. In the 80s, the lack of crashworthiness standards were seen as one reason for the increase in product liability litigation, bringing on a renewed interest in crashworthy design. In the 90s, aircraft crashworthiness is becoming an increasingly important issue with the push towards zero-tolerance of crashes. In a single source, Aircraft Crashworthiness brings together thirty technical papers which cover the past forty years of progress in this area. These papers were selected because of their significance in the development of crashworthiness technology. Aircraft Crashworthiness will be an ideal addition to the bookshelves of aerospace design engineers, airline industry safety personnel, government administrators, and anyone interested in the impact crashworthy design has on aircraft safety.
