Book excerpt: Background information in the conception and development of a configuration known as the Thrie beam is presented in this paper along with findings of a crash test series (five test) on this new barrier element. Basically, the Thrie beam can be described as a triple corrugated beam as compared to a double corrugated W-beam. It is 1-1/2 times the width of the W-beam, however, the corrugation geometry, especially the 3-1/4 inch (83 mm) depth, are similar. The crash test series was conducted on blocked-out steel post median barrier and guardrail systems.

Book Synopsis Test and Evaluation of Traffic Barriers. Final Technical Report by : Dale Stout
Download or read book Test and Evaluation of Traffic Barriers. Final Technical Report written by Dale Stout and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of crash tests were conducted to evaluate several types of guardrails and bridge rails. Two bridge rail designs were tested and showed acceptable performance when evaluated in accordance with NCHRP 230. A three-cable guardrail was modified, and an end terminal was redesigned to obtain-good performance. The guardrail safely redirected a large and small vehicle traveling at 60 mi/h and impacting at 25 and 20 degrees, respectively. The terminal design was tested for snagging by directly impacting the downstream end. Although the device released, the vehicle rolled over. A new PL3 median barrier was designed and tested in accordance with the new AASHTO bridge rail test criteria. A 50,000-1b tractor-trailer impacted the median barrier at 50 mi/h and 15 degrees. The truck was redirected and contained, but rolled over producing undesirable occupant compartment intrusion. An 18,000-1b truck test was conducted on the modified thrie beam median barrier. The results indicated good performance.

Book excerpt: "The 1977 'AASHTO Guide for Selecting, Locating, and Designing Traffic Barriers' defines an experimental barrier as one 'that has performed successfully in full-scale crash tests and promises satisfactory in-service performance.' This report summarizes available information on several experimental barrier systems that have been recently installed throughout the country. Included are cost, construction, and performance data on the following experimental barriers: self-restoring barrier (SERB) guardrail; service level 1 (SL1) bridge rail; Connecticut impact attenuation system (CAIS); SENTRE guardrail terminal; Colorado type 3F median barrier end treatment; two high-performance truck barriers (Idaho and Pennsylvania); IBC sand-filled median barrier; modified thrie beam guardrail"--Technical report documentation page.

Download or read book Safety Effectiveness Evaluation of Traffic Barrier Systems written by United States. National Transportation Safety Board and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traffic barriers are roadside hardware of various designs and materials which are intended to protect vehicles from such off-the-road hazards as trees, embankments, ravines, signposts, bridge support pillars or abutments, or other hazards. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has been concerned with the problem of inadequate traffic barriers for several years. The Safety Board has investigated accidents in which barriers failed, and has made recommendations to the FHWA. Of primary importance among these have been recommendations that the FHWA develop and promulgate mandatory performance standards for traffic barriers. The purpose of such standards would be to require that traffic barrier types be crash-tested to demonstrate their ability to meet a set of established safety criteria. At present, barriers are not required to meet such criteria through crash-testing. The purpose of this report is to review past Safety Board concerns regarding the adequacy of bridge and highway rail systems and to evaluate the FHWA's efforts to develop safer traffic barriers. This study analyzes the results of recent crash-testing sponsored by the FHWA and makes recommendations concerning performance standards for traffic barriers.
