Book excerpt: A fundamental component of the study of worked osseous objects is the identification of the raw materials chosen to make them. In archaeological contexts many objects become degraded to the point where identification is very difficult and the way in which these materials decay during burial and upon excavation can vary greatly. Correct identification is crucial to the investigation of objects, their conservation and future curation. Above all, understanding raw material selection aids our understanding of human-animal interaction in the past both on pragmatic and symbolic levels since the choices made by artisans vary by cultural tradition as well as availability. The 20 papers presented here explore a wealth of information pertaining to the use of osseous materials over the long period of human craftsmanship and tool manufacture by exploring several key themes: · Raw material selection and curation within tool types · Social aspects of raw material selection · New methods of materials identification It is demonstrated that the issue of raw material identification has numerous implications for conservation work, reproduction of objects, the physical characteristics of the tool or ornament, availability of raw materials, the materials chosen for procurement and the cultural reasons that lie behind the choice of raw materials from particular species and skeletal elements to produce planned tool and ornament types. Together, these papers emphasize the need for confident and correct materials identification and demonstrate that functionality is by no means the only, nor necessarily the most important, factor in the selection of osseous raw materials for the fabrication of tools and other cultural objects.

Book Synopsis Carving as Craft by : Archer St. Clair
Download or read book Carving as Craft written by Archer St. Clair and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2003-08-29 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1989 to 1994 more than fifteen hundred bone and ivory objects were excavated from the northeast slope of Rome's Palatine Hill. These remains constitute the largest such find in the western Mediterranean and the first traces of the actual working of ivory in Rome itself. In this original work, art historian Archer St. Clair explores the significance of these finds in understanding both the development of artisanship in Rome and the broader Greco-Roman cultural and artistic tradition to which they belong. Dating primarily from the first through the fifth century C.E., the carved objects include ornamentation for furniture and boxes in the form of plaques and framing strips, jewelry, dolls, a wide variety of pins, as well as smaller numbers of handles, needles, and other implements. Also present at the site was extensive evidence of a bone and ivory workshop, including prepared blanks and waste fragments that provide valuable evidence for artisanal practices in both materials. This volume includes a representative catalog of 648 objects from Palatine East, extensively illustrated with photographs and detailed drawings. Four chapters of introductory material offer a comprehensive overview of the material properties of bone and ivory, the literary evidence, and wider context of their use in the ancient world, and the particular significance of the Palatine East site. While bone has often been treated simply as an inferior and less valuable alternative to ivory, St. Clair notes the close association in their use and elucidates a complex relationship between them. In doing so, she offers a detailed, contextual study of the uses, social perception, and distribution of the two materials, revealing a shared Mediterranean vocabulary of form and technique.

This book was released on 2014-03-20 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poems include quotes by Alan Cohen, Confucius, Buddha, Muhammad, Ravi Zacharias, etc. They are organized by names and from A to Z in coherence with the poems. The collection of poems includes 25 crafting poems from A to Z with quotes just like this one: Crafting is much like the letter U because crafting with used books is one of the best ways to add some style. It's a fun way to make an author's words become even more worthwhile! Crafting is also like U because crafting with the universe in mind is yet undefined but might be the best thing happening to mankind. Crafting with the universe might make you seem very small. Yet that one little space you take for you is the most important crafting space of all. Some very lucky few crafters are able to get in touch with it so make sure you work at it! Crafting is also quite like the letter U because crafting reminds me of crafting with used Christmas cards. Used Christmas cards are also quite nice because of every Xmas craft ingredient that is quite convenient and because crafting with Used Christmas cards also follows the crafting law of the "Petit Bourgeois". There are other things like the blue artistic law and the natural crafting law, but the important thing to remember they are all employing the unwritten law of hem and haw! If you think that this crafting thing is getting out of line, let me tell you this. Question the law of crafting and with you, an expert will have a grand ol' time! And as always, never, never forget this. Make sure to stay true to your hue of blue and your glue. If you stick to this you will always keep your artistic view! Umberto Ungerer can really speak to this: "The only exercise some people get is jumping to conclusions, running down their friends, side-stepping their responsibilities, and pushing their luck!" -Umberto Ungerer Welcome to a happy crafting life and welcome to "Crafting Is Like You!"
Download or read book Kingly Crafts written by Yung-ti Li and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-20 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The site of Anyang, the last capital of the Shang dynasty, dated to around 1200 to 1000 BCE, is one of the most important sources of knowledge about craft production in Bronze Age China. Excavations and research of the settlement over the past ninety years demonstrate both the advanced level of Shang craft workers and the scale and capacity of the craft industries of the time. However, materials unearthed in Anyang by different expeditions have since been stored separately in China and Taiwan, making a thorough study of this important aspect of life in Shang China challenging. Despite efforts to integrate the data based on published material, the physical evidence rarely has been considered as a single group. Through a systematic analysis of the archaeological materials available in both China and Taiwan, Yung-ti Li provides a detailed picture of craft production in Anyang and paves the way for a new understanding of how the Shang capital functioned as a metropolis. Focusing on craft-producing activities, including bronze casting, bone working, shell and marble inlay working, lithic working, and pottery production, Kingly Crafts examines the material remains, the technology, and the production organization of the craft industries. Although the level of Shang craftsmanship can be seen in the finished products, Li demonstrates that it is necessary to study workshop remains and their archaeological context to reconstruct the social and political contexts of craft production. Offering a comprehensive investigation of these remains, Kingly Crafts sheds new light on the relationships between craft industries and political authority in the late Shang period.

Book Synopsis Personal Ornaments in Prehistory by : Emma L. Baysal
Download or read book Personal Ornaments in Prehistory written by Emma L. Baysal and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2019-08-29 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beads, bracelets, necklaces, pendants and many other ornaments are familiar objects that play a fundamental role in personal expression and communication. This book considers how and why the human relationship with ornaments developed and continued over tens of thousands of years, from hunter-gatherer life in the cave to urban elites, from expedient use of natural resources to complex technologies. Using evidence from archaeological sites across Turkey, the Near East and the Balkans, it explores the history of personal ornaments from their appearance in the Palaeolithic until the rise of urban centers in the Early Bronze Age and encompassing technologies ranging from stone cutting to early glazing, metallurgy and the roots of glass manufacture. The development of theoretical and practical approaches to ornaments and the current state of research are illustrated with a wide variety of examples. This book shows that far from being objects of display, of little value in archaeological interpretation and often overlooked, these artifacts are key to understanding trade, relationships, values, beliefs and the construction of personal identity in the past. Indeed, more than any other group of artifacts, their variety in material, form, use and distribution opens doors to both wide ranging scientific exploration and consideration of what it is to be human.

Book Synopsis Neo-Confucian Self-Cultivation by : Barry C. Keenan
Download or read book Neo-Confucian Self-Cultivation written by Barry C. Keenan and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2011-05-02 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately fifteen hundred years after Confucius, his ideas reasserted themselves in the formulation of a sophisticated program of personal self-cultivation. Neo-Confucians argued that humans are endowed with empathy and goodness at birth, an assumption now confirmed by evolutionary biologists. By following the Great Learning—eight steps in the process of personal development—Neo-Confucians showed how this innate endowment could provide the foundation for living morally. Neo-Confucian students did not follow a single manual elaborating each step of the Great Learning; instead they were exposed to age-appropriate texts, commentaries, and anthologies of Neo-Confucian thinkers, which gradually made clear the sequential process of personal development and its connection to social order. Neo-Confucian Self-Cultivation opens up in accessible prose the content of the eight-step process for today’s reader as it examines the source of mainstream Neo-Confucian self-cultivation and its major crosscurrents from 1000 to 1900.
