Book excerpt: This book focuses on the emerging class of new materials characterized by ultra-fine microstrucures. The NATO ASI which produced this book was the first international scientific meeting devoted to a discussion of the mechanical properties and deformation behavior of materials having grain sizes down to a few nanometers. Topics covered include superplasticity, tribology, and the supermodulus effect. Review chapters cover a variety of other themes including synthesis, characterization, thermodynamic stability, and general physical properties. Much of the work is concerned with the issue of how far conventional techniques and concepts can be extended toward atomic scale probing. Another key issue concerns the structure of nanocrystalline materials, in particular, what is the structure and composition of the internal boundaries. These ultra-fine microstructures have proved to challenge even the finest probes that the materials science community has today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a modern, practical approach to the understanding and measurement procedures relevant to the fracture of brittle materials This book examines the testing and analysis of the fracture of brittle materials. Expanding on the measurement and analysis methodology contained in the first edition, it covers the relevant measurements (toughness and strength), material types, fracture mechanics, measurement techniques, reliability and lifetime predictions, microstructural considerations, and material/test selection processes appropriate for the analysis of the fracture behavior of brittle materials. The Fracture of Brittle Materials: Testing and Analysis, Second Edition summarizes the concepts behind the selection of a test procedure for fracture toughness and strength, and goes into detail on how the statistics of fracture can be used to assure reliability. It explains the importance of the role of microstructure in these determinations and emphasizes the use of fractographic analysis as an important tool in understanding why a part failed. The new edition includes a significant quantity of material related to the fracture of biomaterials, and features two new chapters—one on thermal shock, the other on the modeling of the fracture process. It also expands on a discussion of how to treat the statistics of fracture strength data to ensure reliability. Provides practical analysis of fracture toughness and strength Introduces the engineering and materials student to the basic concepts necessary for analyzing brittle fracture Contains new statistical analysis procedures to allow for the prediction of the safe design of brittle components Contains real-world examples to assist the reader in applying the concepts to their own research, material development, and quality-control needs The Fracture of Brittle Materials: Testing and Analysis, Second Edition is an important resource for all students, technicians, engineers, scientists, and researchers involved in the study, analysis, creation, or testing of ceramics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent studies on indentation fracture in brittle materials, use of the cracks which form beneath a pointed indenter and grow stably with load has been suggested as a simple technique for the determination of fracture toughness (Kc). The applicability of this technique has been assessed by performing tests on a number of polycrystalline ceramics, glass-ceramics, and glasses which span a range of fracture toughness from 0.7 to 4.5 MN-3/2. Various sharp indenter geometries were tested and it was concluded that cracks produced with the Vickers indenter were the easiest to measure. The existing theories for calculating Kc from experimental measurements (crack length, load, etc.) have been evaluated and their applicability has been determined. The results demonstrate the usefulness of a Vickers pyramid in obtaining a qualitative ranking of Kc for a wide range of brittle materials. A number of practical problems associated with this technique are discussed.

Book excerpt: Cohesive zone finite element simulations of pyramidal indentation cracking in brittle materials have been carried out in order to: (1) critically examine indentation cracking models that relate fracture toughness to indentation data; (2) determine the underlying physical mechanisms of indentation crack growth from a continuum view and their relationship to material properties; (3) explore the influence of indenter geometry on crack extension; and (4) provide a platform from which future simulations can add more complex material behavior as well as guidance for experimental measurements of fracture toughness. Standard fracture toughness geometries in addition to simplified indentation geometries were simulated in order to assess the advantages and limitations of using cohesive zone finite element simulations to study indentation cracking in brittle materials. Simulation results were found to be consistent with linear-elastic fracture mechanics when crack lengths approximately 10 times larger than process zone sizes. Results from Vickers indentation cracking simulations showed deviations from standard models and additional material dependencies not considered in therein. A transition in cracking behavior from median type cracks to Palmqvist type cracks was observed as the ratio of elastic modulus to hardness increased and plasticity played a more prominent role in the deformation response. Separate stress intensity factor solutions were derived for the two cracking regimes by applying simple scaling relationships and observations from the finite elements. Simulations of different indenter geometries were found to correlate well with the stress intensity factors. In addition, the indentation cracking response could be tailored to a specific behavior by changing the indenter centerline-to-face angle. Cohesive zone finite element simulations were found to be well suited to exploring, improving, and studying the materials science of indentation cracking.

Book excerpt: Failure of components which operate in the creep range can result either from the growth of a dominant crack or through the accumulation of 'damage' in the material. Conventional and nuclear power generating plant are generally designed on the basis of continuum failure, with assessment routes providing an indication of the effects of flaws on component performance. Another example where an understanding of creep failure is important is in the design of offshore structures which operate in arctic waters. These structures can be subjected to quite considerable forces by wind-driven ice sheets, which are limited by failure of the ice sheet. Design codes are currently being developed which identify the different mechanisms of failure, ranging from continuum crushing to radial cracking and buckling of the ice sheet. Our final example concerns engineering ceramics, which are currently being considered for use in a wide range of high-temperature applications. A major problem preventing an early adoption of these materials is their brittle response at high stresses, although they can behave in a ductile manner at lower stresses. In each of the above situations an understanding of the processes of fast fracture, creep crack growth and continuum failure is required, and in particular an understanding of the material and structural features that influence the transition from brittle to ductile behaviour. The translation of this information to component design is most advanced for metallic components.

Book excerpt: In an attempt to meet the demand for new ultra-high strength materials, the processing of novel material configurations with unique microstructure is being explored in systems which are further and further from equilibrium. One such class of emerging materials is the so-called nanophased or nanostructured materials. This class of materials includes metals and alloys, ceramics, and polymers characterized by controlled ultra-fine microstructural features in the form oflayered, fibrous, or phase and grain distribution. While it is clear that these materials are in an early stage of development, there is now a sufficient body of literature to fuel discussion of how the mechanical properties and deformation behavior can be controlled through control of the microstructure. This NATO-Advanced Study Institute was convened in order to assess our current state of knowledge in the field of mechanical properties and deformation behavior in materials with ultra fine microstructure, to identify opportunities and needs for further research, and to identify the potential for technological applications. The Institute was the first international scientific meeting devoted to a discussion on the mechanical properties and deformation behavior of materials having grain sizes down to a few nanometers. Included in these discussions were the topics of superplasticity, tribology, and the supermodulus effect. Lectures were also presented which covered a variety of other themes including synthesis, characterization, thermodynamic stability, and general physical properties.
