Book excerpt: Cryptogram puzzles are a great educational tool to enhance and promote cooperative play. We like the way that challenges our thinking and exercise our minds. Puzzles are also an important educational learning tool for young children as they provide many skills and mental learning benefits and opportunities. Puzzles come in a whole range of themes and topics such as countries, capitals, currencies, alphabet letters, shapes, vegetables, numbers, pets, transport, colours, sports, trees, mountains etc. It increases visual special awareness and develops a deeper understanding of these themes and topics. Completing a puzzle, even the simplest of puzzles set a single goal to achieve. This process involves problem-solving, reasoning skills and developing solutions that one can later be transferred into his personal life. Puzzles are a fun way for one to develop and refine your fine motor skills. When engaged in playing with puzzles, one is required to pick up, pinch and grasp pieces and move them around, manipulating them into slots, sorting them and fitting them into the correct places. The accomplishment of achieving a goal brings so much satisfaction to a player. Overcoming the challenges involved in solving a puzzle gives you a sense of achievement and pride within. It provides a boost to your self-confidence and self-esteem as it prepares you for other challenges in future life. This is a brain exercise that instantly grasps a person’s interest, and the person feels a sigh of relief only after solving the puzzle cryptogram. We should keep playing such games to keep our brains refreshed & active. These games act like the gym to the brain which is both helpful & necessary for it. The cryptogram puzzle words are encrypted using a secret code. Your job is to break the code by substituting letters for the words.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers Flash for the everyday developer. The average Flash developer doesn't have luxurious timelines, employers who understand the value of reusability, or the help of an information architect to design a usable experience. This book helps bridge the gap for these coders who may be used to C++, Java, or C# and want to move over to Flash. Griffith covers real-world scenarios pulled from his own experiences developing games for over 8 years in the industry. Gifts from Griffith's REAL-WORLD experiences include: Game design templates and pre-written scripts to automate tasks within Flash; Classes for handling common math computations used in gaming, so that game developers can see how to set up a simple game flow; Powerful debugging tools for your games(debuggers for Flash games are hard to come by, and this book provides them for you). The associated web site offers: Code from the game examples in the book with fully build-able source files. Additional code snippets, classes, and utilities. Scripts for automating tedious and repetitive tasks within Flash. Template game-design documents for planning game proposals in the same manner outlined in the book. Links to other helpful online resources for both Flash and game development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the latest research in linguistic modules and interfaces in Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG). LFG has a highly modular design that models the linguistic system as a set of discreet submodules that include, among others, constituent structure, functional structure, argument structure, semantic structure, and prosodic structure; each module has its own coherent properties and is related to other modules by correspondence functions. Following a detailed introduction, Part I examines the nature of linguistic structures, interfaces, and representations in LFG's architecture and ontology. Parts II and III are concerned with problems, analyses, and generalizations associated with linguistic phenomena of long-standing theoretical significance, including agreement, reciprocals, possessives, reflexives, raising, subjecthood, and relativization, demonstrating how these phenomena can be naturally accounted for within LFG's modular architecture. Part IV explores issues of the synchronic and diachronic dynamics of syntactic categories in grammar, such as unlike category coordination, fuzzy categorial edges, and consequences of decategorialization, providing explicit LFG solutions to such problems, including those resulting from language change in progress. The final part re-examines and refines the precise representations and interfaces of syntax with morphology, semantics, and pragmatics to account for challenging facts such as suspended affixation, prosody in multiple question word interrogatives and information structure, anaphoric dependencies, and idioms. The volume draws on data from a range of typologically diverse languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Icelandic, Kelabit, Polish, and Urdu, and will be of interest not only to those working in LFG and related frameworks, but to all those working on linguistic interfaces from a variety of theoretical standpoints.

Urban had the idea of organizing a winter school in the Austrian mountains. The very concept of a school was not new: to bring physicists together in an environment which differs totally from the daily world of institutes and laboratories, to contrast hard classroom work in lectures by distinguished speakers with a relaxed atmosphere, to provide opportunities for entering newly developing fields and exchanging ideas, all this had already resulted in a few summer schools in southern Europe and the US. The idea of combining physics with skiing rather than swimming was, however, new. After some sampling by a few younger members of Ur ban's group, Schladming was selected as an appropriate place. At that time skiing was not very much developed here; there were few lifts, but a road to Hochwurzen and a regular bus service opened at least one longer track. The first meeting took place in a classroom of the local school, w here some 40 participants were squeezed into benches designed for children. In the next year we moved into the dining hall of a small inn, which does not exist any more (an attempt to serve beer during the lectures was stopped by the orga nizing committee). Only in later years did we find a permanent home here in the Stadtsaal.

Book excerpt: The theoretical understanding of elementary particle interactions has under gone a revolutionary change during the past one and a half decades. The spontaneously broken gauge theories, which in the 1970s emerged as a prime candidate for the description of electro-weak (as weIl as strong) interactions, have been confirmed by the discovery of neutral weak currents as weIl as the w- and Z-bosons. We now have a field theory of electro-weak interactions at energy scales below 100 GeV-the Glashow-Weinberg-Salam theory. It is a renormalizable theory which enables us to do calculations without en countering unnecessary divergences. The burning question now is: Wh at lies ahead at the next level of unification? As we head into the era of supercolliders and ultrahigh energy machines to answer this question, many ap, pealing possi bilities exist: left-right symmetry, technicolor, compositeness, grand unifica ti on, supersymmetry, supergravity, Kaluza-Klein models, and most recently superstrings that even unify gravity along with other interactions. Experi ments will decide if any one or any combination of these is to be relevant in the description of physics at the higher energies. As an outcome of our con fidence in the possible scenerios for elementary particle physics, we have seen our understanding of the early uni verse improve significantly.

Book excerpt: This book is the result of a broad-based and in-depth study of high energy physics commissioned by the Executive Committee of the Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physical Society. This year-long study was initiated in the early 1994, in the wake of the cancellation of the SSC, and is meant to complement the report of the Drell HEPAP subpanel, charged with providing a vision for the future of the field. The DPF study of high energy physics was organized on the basis of the working groups, each led by a number of co-conveners chosen among established leaders in the various subspecialties in the field. These conveners, in turn, organized their working groups by inviting other active workers in the discipline to participate and gathered further input from the community by holding a variety of specialized meetings and workshops. This book contains the final reports of the 11 working groups assembled for the study, along with an extended overview and executive summary by the editors.
