Download or read book Phase Theory written by Ángel J. Gallego and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed and up to date review of the framework of phases (Chomsky 2000 and subsequent work). It explores the interaction between the narrow syntactic computation and the external systems from a minimalist perspective. As has sometimes been noted, "Phase Theory" is the current way to study the cyclic nature of the system, and 'phases' are therefore the natural locality hallmark, being directly relevant for phenomena such as binding, agreement, movement, islands, reconstruction, or stress assignment. This work discusses the different approaches to phases that have been proposed in the recent literature, arguing in favor of the thesis that the points of cyclic transfer are to be related to uninterpretable morphology (the ?-features on the heads C and v*). This take on phases is adopted in order to investigate raising structures, binding, subjunctive dependents, and object shift (word order) in Romance languages, as well as the nature of islands.

Download or read book Algebras and Modules II written by Idun Reiten and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1998 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 43 research papers demonstrate the application of recent developments in the representation theory of artin algebras and related topics. Among the algebras considered are tame, bi- serial, cellular, factorial hereditary, Hopf, Koszul, non- polynomial growth, pre-projective, Termperley-Lieb, tilted, and quasi-tilted. Other topics include tilting and co-tilting modules and generalizations as *-modules, exceptional sequences of modules and vector bundles, homological conjectives, and vector space categories. The treatment assumes knowledge of non- commutative algebra, including rings, modules, and homological algebra at a graduate or professional level. No index. Member prices are $79 for institutions and $59 for individuals, which also apply to members of the Canadian Mathematical Society. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

This book was released on 2011-05-27 with total page 757 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamics, Games and Science I and II are a selection of surveys and research articles written by leading researchers in mathematics. The majority of the contributions are on dynamical systems and game theory, focusing either on fundamental and theoretical developments or on applications to modeling in biology, ecomonics, engineering, finances and psychology. The papers are based on talks given at the International Conference DYNA 2008, held in honor of Mauricio Peixoto and David Rand at the University of Braga, Portugal, on September 8-12, 2008. The aim of these volumes is to present cutting-edge research in these areas to encourage graduate students and researchers in mathematics and other fields to develop them further.

Book Synopsis Ultradian Rhythms from Molecules to Mind by : David Lloyd
Download or read book Ultradian Rhythms from Molecules to Mind written by David Lloyd and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-08-27 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 5. 1. 1 Biological Rhythms and Clocks From an evolutionary perspective, the adaptation of an organism’s behavior to its environment has depended on one of life’s fundamental traits: biological rhythm generation. In virtually all light-sensitive organisms from cyanobacteria to humans, biological clocks adapt cyclic physiology to geophysical time with time-keeping properties in the circadian (24 h), ultradian (24 h) domains (Edmunds, 1988; Lloyd, 1998; Lloyd et al. , 2001; Lloyd and Murray, 2006; Lloyd, 2007; Pittendrigh, 1993; Sweeney and Hastings, 1960) By definition, all rhythms exhibit regular periodicities since they constitute a mechanism of timing. Timing exerted by oscillatory mechanisms are found throughout the biological world and their periods span a wide range from milliseconds, as in the action potential of n- rons and the myocytes, to the slow evolutionary changes that require thousands of generations. In this context, to understand the synchronization of a population of coupled oscillators is an important problem for the dynamics of physiology in living systems (Aon et al. , 2007a, b; Kuramoto, 1984; Strogatz, 2003; Winfree, 1967). Circadian rhythms, the most intensively studied, are devoted to measuring daily 24 h cycles. A variety of physiological processes in a wide range of eukaryotic organisms display circadian rhythmicity which is characterized by the following major properties (Anderson et al. , 1985; Edmunds, 1988): (i) stable, autonomous (self-sustaining) oscillations having a free-running period under constant envir- mental conditions of ca.
