Book Synopsis The Indians' Last Fight Or The Dull Knife Raid by : Dennis Collins
Download or read book The Indians' Last Fight Or The Dull Knife Raid written by Dennis Collins and published by Leonaur Limited. This book was released on 2012 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The iconic times of cowboys and Indians-by one who was there Although this book's title suggests a particular focus on one notable event in the history of the American Western Frontier it is also a recollection by the author of life as a 'westerner' in the states of Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas, during the post-Civil War years from around 1870-90. Collins gives us many insightful details of life on the Great Plains, of the cattle trails, the 'cowpunchers' who drove the legendary herds along them and of the many fights and skirmishes fought between the settlers, the U.S army and the Indian tribes who were engaged in a last, desperate struggle to maintain their way of life. The subject of the book's title was a noteworthy event of the so called 'Cheyenne Exodus' and in 1878 and was the last Indian raid in Kansas. Dull Knife and his band of Northern Cheyenne were forcibly removed from their lands and took to the warpath, eventually slaughtering between 75 and 100 settlers around the Cimarron area before fleeing from their pursuers. They were eventually caught in Nebraska and Dull Knife was taken prisoner. This is an excellent first-hand account of the western expansion of the United States by one who lived through them and will be appreciated by all students of the subject. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Book excerpt: Historians of the American West, perhaps inspired by NAFTA and Internet communication, are expanding their intellectual horizons across borders north and south. This collection of essays functions as a how-to guide to comparative frontier research in the Americas. Frontiers specialist Richard W. Slatta presents topics, techniques, and methods that will intrigue social science professionals and western history buffs alike as he explores the frontiers of North and South America from Spanish colonial days into the twentieth century. The always popular cowboy is joined by the fascinating gaucho, llanero, vaquero, and charro as Slatta compares their work techniques, roundups, songs, tack, lingo, equestrian culture, and vices. We visit saloons and pulperias as well as plains and pampas, and Slatta expertly compares clothing, weather, terrain, diets, alcoholic beverages, card games, and military tactics. From primary records we learn how Europeans, Native Americans, and African Americans became the ranch hands, cowmen, and buckaroos of the Americas, and why their dependence on the ranch cattle industry kept them bachelors and landless peons.

Book excerpt: *Includes pictures of Buffalo Bill and other important people, places, and events in his life. *Describes Buffalo Bill's famous Wild West show and its famous participants. *Includes a Bibliography for further reading. "The West of the old times, with its strong characters, its stern battles and its tremendous stretches of loneliness, can never be blotted from my mind." - Buffalo Bill Cody Space may be the final frontier, but no frontier has ever captured the American imagination like the "Wild West", which still evokes images of dusty cowboys, outlaws, gunfights, gamblers, and barroom brawls over 100 years after the West was settled. A constant fixture in American pop culture, the 19th century American West continues to be vividly and colorful portrayed not just as a place but as a state of mind. In Charles River Editors' Legends of the West series, readers can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most famous frontier figures in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. The Wild West has made legends out of many men and women through the embellishment of their stories, but it was Buffalo Bill Cody who truly brought the Wild West to life and provided the images that people still associate with the 19th century West today. Though he had a long career that spanned service in the Civil War, trapping, and even a stint with the Pony Express, Buffalo Bill eventually became synonymous with his world-famous Wild West Show. By depicting stereotypical Western scenes like riding the Pony Express, and gunfights between cowboys and Indians, Buffalo Bill became one of the men most responsible for establishing how the public remembered the Wild West, and the show influenced subsequent film and literature. The show also featured several kinds of activities that are still part of rodeos today, including riding bucking broncos, roping livestock, and target shooting. Wild West Shows were popular in America during the late 19th century, but it was Buffalo Bill who would make it popular overseas and truly master the art of showmanship. Employing famous figures of the era, including Annie Oakley and Sitting Bull, Buffalo Bill managed to make national celebrities out of his show's participants, while also deftly promoting himself as the ultimate showman and making himself one of the most famous figures of the Wild West in the process. With plenty of experience shooting bison and riding for the Pony Express, Buffalo Bill would also participate as a cowboy in his own show, and it was even said he played the part of George Custer for Custer's Last Stand. Buffalo Bill's show, and his own legend, eventually turned him into a dime novel hero himself. While Buffalo Bill will always be associated with his Wild West Show, he was one of the few legends of the West to live a full life, and he did many other things in life that have been overshadowed by his success. Legends of the West: The Life and Legacy of Buffalo Bill Cody chronicles the Western icon's life, while also analyzing his legacy and the legends that surrounded his show and what they depicted. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events in his life, you will learn about Buffalo Bill like you never have before, in no time at all.

Book Synopsis Alaska's Skyboys by : Katherine Johnson Ringsmuth
Download or read book Alaska's Skyboys written by Katherine Johnson Ringsmuth and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating account of the development of aviation in Alaska examines the daring missions of pilots who initially opened up the territory for military positioning and later for trade and tourism. Early Alaskan military and bush pilots navigated some of the highest and most rugged terrain on earth, taking off and landing on glaciers, mudflats, and active volcanoes. Although they were consistently portrayed by industry leaders and lawmakers alike as cowboys—and their planes compared to settlers’ covered wagons—the reality was that aviation catapulted Alaska onto a modern, global stage; the federal government subsidized aviation’s growth in the territory as part of the Cold War defense against the Soviet Union. Through personal stories, industry publications, and news accounts, historian Katherine Johnson Ringsmuth uncovers the ways that Alaska’s aviation growth was downplayed in order to perpetuate the myth of the cowboy spirit and the desire to tame what many considered to be the last frontier.
