Download or read book Cowboy Life written by George Philip and published by South Dakota State Historical Society. This book was released on 2007 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rattlesnakes and ornery horses, the dreaded Texas Itch, midnight rambles in graveyards, trips to Mexico, and hard riding on the last open range: George Philip recounts all these adventures and more with wit and humour. George Phillip arrived in South Dakota from Scotland in 1899. For the next four years, he rode as a cowboy for his uncle's L-7 cattle outfit during the heyday of the last open range. But the cowboy era was a brief one, and in 1903 Philip turned in his string of horses and hung up his saddle to enter law school in Michigan. In these candid letters, Philip provides fascinating insights into the development of the West and of South Dakota. His writing details the cowboy's day-to-day work, from branding and roping to navigating across the palins by stars and buttes, as the great open ranges slowly closed up.
Book Synopsis The Last American Cowboy by : Mike R. Dunbar
Download or read book The Last American Cowboy written by Mike R. Dunbar and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book details the story of a young man, a fictional character, Clem Barnett, during the late 1940's and 1950's, raised as a boy in the mid-west with dreams and visions, based on romantic books and movies, of being a cowboy in the West. He finds himself venturing far from his home in northeastern Oklahoma to hire-out on two very different ranches; first, one in Montana and later, one in Idaho. There, he learns about ranching, the cattle business, and most importantly, about life. He also learns what the modern, for the time period, cowboy is and how it differs greatly from his romantic vision. He faces many adventures and interacts with a host of colorful characters in search of his dreams. Because the story occurs in the early 1950's, the young man is faced with the horrors of participating in the Korean War, and more importantly, facing the emotional effects thereafter. Unlikely characters assist in his recovery and he gains respect and love for the people of the Basque culture who helped him. The story ends with a simple love story and a realization that dreams can be elusive. In the end, he finds peace and happiness and seems to come close to living the life of the romantic cowboy he envisioned. Others see in him a person who so loves the life of a cowboy and confers upon him the title of the last romantic, real life, American Cowboy.
Download or read book Hashknife Cowboy written by Stella Hughes and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1989-02-01 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Age and size ain't got nothin' to do with it," Mack's daddy once said. "You gotta want to be a cowboy." Mack Hughes wanted to be a cowboy, all right, and he was just twelve years old when he went to work for the famous Hashknife spread in northern Arizona. Growing up on the range, Mack lived a life about which modern boys can only wonder. He spins yarns of bad horses and the men who rode them, tells of wild dogs that ravaged young calves, and recalls lonely winter weeks spent at a remote camp-where his home was a shack so flimsy that snow blew through the cracks and covered his bed. Stella Hughes, author of the best-selling Chuck Wagon Cookin' and a cowhand in her own right, has compiled from her husband's reminiscences an authentic look both at Arizona history and at cowboying as it really was. Illustrated by Joe Beeler, founding member of the Cowboy Artists of America.
Book Synopsis Texas True Crime Miscellany by : Clay Coppedge
Download or read book Texas True Crime Miscellany written by Clay Coppedge and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021-07-26 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outrageous acts of villainy have slowly drifted out of the national limelight and into the dustbin of Texas history. Consider the uproar over the 1879 shooting of actor Maurice Barrymore in Marshall and the 1949 murder of oil field legend Tex Thornton in Amarillo. The 1909 Coryell County Courthouse massacre committed by a sixteen-year-old girl remains just as shocking today. For the long-suffering associates of repeat offenders like Fort Worth's Flapper Bandit or Temple's International Man of Mystery, notoriety couldn't fade quickly enough. From the lawless days of the frontier to the rise of organized crime, Clay Coppedge sifts through eighteen obscure case files to chart the evolution of crime and punishment in the state.
Book Synopsis Hell's Half Acre by : Richard F. Selcer
Download or read book Hell's Half Acre written by Richard F. Selcer and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Texas is a place where legends are made, die, and are revived. Fort Worth, Texas, claims its own legend – Hell’s Half Acre – a wild ’n woolly accumulation of bordellos, cribs, dance houses, saloons, and gambling parlors. Tenderloin districts were a fact of life in every major town in the American West, but Hell’s Half Acre – its myth and its reality – can be said to be a microcosm of them all. The most famous and infamous westerners visited the Acre: Timothy (“Longhair Jim”) Courtright, Luke Short, Bat Masterson, Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, Sam Bass, Mary Porter, Etta Place, along with Butch Cassidy and his Wild Bunch, and many more. For civic leaders and reformers, the Acre presented a dilemma – the very establishments they sought to close down or regulate were major contributors to the local economy. Controversial in its heyday and receiving new attention by such movies as Lonesome Dove, Hell’s Half Acre remains the subject of debate among historians and researchers today. Richard Selcer successfully separates fact from fiction, myth from reality, in this vibrant study of the men and women of Cowtown’s notorious Acre.

Download or read book Cowboy's Virgin written by Lexi Banks and published by Ownit Publishing LLC. This book was released on with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Y’all would think with a name like Alex Fancy I’d be a butler or something, not the guy who’s soon gonna be the best damn bull rider in the world. Yeah, they say I have a bad attitude, and that I don’t deserve the shot, just because I like my women, beer, and fighting. I never much cared what they thought until the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen, a model named Emily, suggested we pretend to date. She said she needed my “edge” to help her get more clients, and I needed her innocent reputation to prove to people that I’m not some sort of asshole. Well, not a complete one, anyway. Six months dating a model seems like a nice deal, but one small hitch: she don’t want to have sex until she’s married, and she won’t let me sleep with any other women, even though we’re not really dating. This is gonna be a long six months.
