Book Synopsis Vocabulario Vaquero/Cowboy Talk by : Robert N. Smead

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish is an important source for terms and expressions that have made their way into the English of the southwestern United States. Vocabulario Vaquero/Cowboy Talk is the first book to list all Spanish-language terms pertaining to two important activities in the American West-ranching and cowboying-with special reference to American Indian terms that have come through Spanish. In addition to presenting the most accurate definitions available, this A-to-Z lexicon traces the etymology of words and critically reviews and assesses the specialized English sources for each entry. It is the only dictionary of its kind to reference Spanish sources. The scholarly treatment of this volume makes it an essential addition to the libraries of linguists and historians interested in Spanish/English contact in the American West. Western enthusiasts of all backgrounds will find accessible entries full of invaluable information. Robert N. Smead is Associate Professor of Linguistics in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Brigham Young University. Ronald Kil is a New Mexico cowboy and artist who has worked on ranches and feedlots all over the West. Richard W. Slatta is Professor of History at North Carolina State University and the author of numerous books, including Comparing Cowboys and Frontiers.
Book Synopsis Western Words: a Dictionary of the Old West by : Ramon Adams
Download or read book Western Words: a Dictionary of the Old West written by Ramon Adams and published by . This book was released on 1997-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western Words has 5,000 words of cowboy language as vibrant now as it was in the old American frontier. "Within the cowman's figures of speech lie the rich field of his subtle humor and strength-unique, original, full-flavored. With his usually limited education he squeezes the juice from language, molds it to suit his needs, and is a genius at making a verb out of anything. He 'don't have to fish 'round for no decorated language to make his meanin' clear, ' and has little patience with the man who 'spouts words that run eight to the pound.' Perhaps the strength and originality in his speech are due to the solitude, the nearness of the stars, the bigness of the country, and the far horizons-all of which give him a chance to think clearly and go into the depths of his own mind. Wide spaces 'don't breed chatterboxes.' On his long and lonely rides, he is not forced to listen to the scandal and idle gossip that dwarf a man's mind. Quite frequently he has no one to talk to but a horse..." -from the author's Introduction

Book excerpt: This book, originally published in 1944, has 5,000 words of cowboy language as vibrant now as it was in the old American frontier. The native cowman forged his own language. Like other men of the soil, he created similes & metaphors, salty & unrefined, but sparkling with stimulating vigor. In the early days, many men with college degrees came west, fell in love with the freedom of range life, & remained. Not bound by conventions, they soon drifted into the infectious parlance of the cow country. This volume has been prepared to help preserve this lingo for posterity. The terms have been gathered from every part of the range. Within the cowman's figures of speech lie the rich field of his subtle humor & strength -- unique, original, full-flavored. Illus.

Book Synopsis Cowboy Dictionary Large Print by : Barbara Neville
Download or read book Cowboy Dictionary Large Print written by Barbara Neville and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-08-15 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A companion volume to Barbara Neville's Spirit Animal series. The books are written in cowboy vernacular. To assist those who may not have watched enough Western movies, I have created a word list. 1 Cowboy Dictionary: This informal dictionary of cowboy vernacular, Spanish expressions, Brit idiosyncrasies, Hawaiian pidgin, fingerspelling and other regional planet dialects as appropriate to the character (plus the cast of characters, gadgets, a crude MadDog town map, outfits, planets and story settings as described below) is compiled from Barbara Neville's Spirit Animal book series. There have been some variations in the terms included in the cowboy dictionary over the course of the first nine books. While much, if not all, of the vernacular is easily understood by many of us, we don't want to leave anyone out, including those who speak English as a second language, non-Spanish speakers, or people who have never lived around Hawaiian pidgin. The vernacular list has grown with each book. And the characters are bound to invent new and amazing variations on the English language as their stories play out, but as of book nine (Warriors' Woman) this tiny tome should suffice. 2 Cast of Characters: such a list did not appear in the books until "Broken Warrior," the ninth book. The first book doesn't contain all of the characters as many of them are met along the trail. Each has their own story and only a few attain inclusion into the clan. This list provides an easy reference to the background stories and Injin name variations of each of the main clan members. Hoss, neither a human nor a gadget, but a pivotal cast member, is included in this list. 3 Various Gadgets: includes the main gadgets in the books. 4 Map: A hand drawn map of MadDog town, provenance unknown. 5 Outfits: A list of ranches, and businesses that figure prominently in the series. 6 Planets: Some visited, some important in character histories. They all play a part in the story. 7 Home or Space: Spoiler alert! A list of the settings of the various books.
