Book excerpt: Cover crops slow erosion, improve soil, smother weeds, enhance nutrient and moisture availability, help control many pests and bring a host of other benefits to your farm. At the same time, they can reduce costs, increase profits and even create new sources of income. You¿ll reap dividends on your cover crop investments for years, since their benefits accumulate over the long term. This book will help you find which ones are right for you. Captures farmer and other research results from the past ten years. The authors verified the info. from the 2nd ed., added new results and updated farmer profiles and research data, and added 2 chap. Includes maps and charts, detailed narratives about individual cover crop species, and chap. about aspects of cover cropping.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Degradation of soils continues at a pace that will eventually create a local, regional, or even global crisis when diminished soil resources collide with increasing climate variation. It's not too late to restore our soils to a more productive state by rediscovering the value of soil management, building on our well-established and ever-expanding scientific understanding of soils. Soil management concepts have been in place since the cultivation of crops, but we need to rediscover the principles that are linked together in effective soil management. This book is unique because of its treatment of soil management based on principles—the physical, chemical, and biological processes and how together they form the foundation for soil management processes that range from tillage to nutrient management. Whether new to soil science or needing a concise reference, readers will benefit from this book's ability to integrate the science of soils with management issues and long-term conservation efforts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will not serve as the "encyclopedia of cover crop management," but it’s close. The benefits of a wide range of individual cover crops and blends/mixes for specific agronomic crop rotations and geographic locations are included. Descriptions, photographs, and illustrations show how cover crops look in the field, including plant height, leaf architecture, and rooting patterns. Long term benefits are described for soil health, soil structure, water quality, nutrient contributions, soil biodiversity, air quality and climate change. In addition to the "whys" of cover crop use, the book includes details on the "hows:" how to choose cover crops for specific applications and locations; how (and when) to plant; how to manage and maintain the cover for maximum benefit; and how and when to terminate. Planting options include: drilling/planting between rows of an agronomic crop at planting time, or when the crop is short (i.e. corn in early June); "aerial" seeding with an airplane or high-clearance machine shortly before the crop reaches maturity; and drilling/planting immediately after harvest of the agronomic crop. Selected cover crops (blends) can help with pest and disease management. Cover crops are an economic input with an expected return on investment, similar to pesticides and fertilizer. As part of a continuous no-till system, cover crops provide long-term biological, chemical and structural benefits. The resulting increase in soil organic matter means the agronomic crop yields benefit from better water infiltration and water holding capacity, greater availability of nitrogen and other nutrients, deeper rooting, and increased soil microbial activity in the root zone.

It also analyzes both the negative impacts they can have and the ecosystem services they can provide. The introduction of a cover crop between two main crops helps catch the soil mineral nitrogen before the period of drainage and consequently reduces nitrate leaching and nitrate concentration in the drainage water. This study allows quantifying the efficiency of cover crops at catching nitrate and optimizing their implantation conditions over a large range of French pedoclimatic conditions. The presence of high nitrate levels in surface and ground waters, due to excessive nitrogen fertilization and natural production of nitrate by soil organic matter mineralization, is a double challenge for public health and environment protection.

This book was released on 1959 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cover crops were evaluated with respect to effect on the following: soil organic-matter content, water-stability of aggregates, bulk-density of soil, conservation of moisture and plant nutrients, soil compaction, control of splash erosion, and on corn yield. Also appraised were the additional effects of woodchips on some of the above physical properties of the soil. An evaluation was made on the relative effects of heavy and moderate levels of fertilizations and of seasonal variations on water-stability of aggregates. In addition, different systems of managing cover crops, detachability of the soil by raindrop were studied. Finally, domestic rye grass (Lolius sp.) field brome (Bromus arvensis), non-hardy alfalfa (Medicago sativa), and rye (Secale cereals) were rated for their effectiveness in preventing splash erosion. In evaluating the effects of the cover crop on the soil organic matter content, it was discovered that continuous cultivation of clean tilled row and vegetable crops with moderate fertilization, without any source of organic material other than crop residues, decreased the content of organic-matter in the soil. The rate of decrease was greatest soon after breaking the land out of sod but it slowed down gradualy. Homever, when more crop residue were returned to the soil by heavy fertilization, the depletion rate was slower. The consistent use of domestic rye grass cover crop, which returned one and one-third tons of organic materials per acre per ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed for individuals who want to apply conservation practices either without or with minimal technical assistance. These individuals include students who want to practice soil/water conservation with some instructor guidance and others who want to apply the principles in their own way, to their own conditions, and within their own capability to apply them. To meet these needs, the book includes a discussion and description of soil/water conservation methods for the small operator, at the same time recognizing changes brought about through improved technology and by larger and more complex farm equipment. It is intended to be useful for the small acreage owner and for urban dwellers who have a soil/water conservation problem. Practices discussed can also help school officials select a school site and develop a conservation plan on the area-a plan that can be used to teach wise use of soil/water and related resources, and to serve as an outdoor classroom. The book is divided into 20 chapters and includes an appendix summarizing approved soil conservation practices (related to each chapter), an index, and glossary. Among the topics presented are conservation tillage, contour farming, strip crop farming, preventing and healing gullies, and controlling sandblows. (JN)
