Book Synopsis Woman as Mother and Wife in the African Context of the Family in the Light of John Paul II’s Anthropological and Theological Foundation by : Joseph Okech Adhunga
Download or read book Woman as Mother and Wife in the African Context of the Family in the Light of John Paul II’s Anthropological and Theological Foundation written by Joseph Okech Adhunga and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-04-30 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the theological and anthropological foundations of the understanding of the dignity and vocation of woman as a mother and wife, gifts given by God that expresses the riches of the African concept of family. There are two approaches to inculturation theology in Africa, namely, that which attempts to construct African theology by starting from the biblical ecclesial teachings and find from them what features of African culture are relevant to the Christian theological and anthropological values, and the other one which takes the African cultural background as the point of departure. According to John Paul II, the dignity and vocation of woman is “something more universal, based on the very fact of her being a woman within all the interpersonal relationships, which, in the most varied ways, shape society and structure the interaction between all persons,” (Mulieris Dignitatem no. 29). This “concerns each and every woman, independent of the cultural context in which she lives and independently of her spiritual, psychological and physical characteristics, as for example, age, education, health, work, and whether she is married or single,” (Mulieris Dignitatem, no. 29). The theology of inculturation as presented in this dissertation opens the way for the integration of the theological anthropological teachings of John Paul II in understanding African woman as mother and wife.
Book Synopsis To You and Your Children by : Benjamin K. Wikner
Download or read book To You and Your Children written by Benjamin K. Wikner and published by Canon Press & Book Service. This book was released on 2004 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scripture promises that God's people "shall not labor in vain, nor bring forth children for trouble; for they shall be the descendants of the blessed of the Lord, and their offspring with them" (Is. 65:22-23), and that Christ "will turn...the hearts of the children to their fathers" (Mal. 4:6). Yet Christian parents today face a disturbing exodus of their children from the Church to the world. Why is this? What is the place of children within the faith? What do the promises mean? Recognizing that this subject is fraught with difficulty and grief, the twelve contributors to this volume seek to address the hard questions and lay a biblical foundation of hope for our children. Contributors include Timothy Bayly, Joel Belz, Randy Booth, David Hagopian, Douglas Jones, Dr. Nelson D. Kloosterman, Dr. Charles Alan McIlhenny, Dr. Robert S. Rayburn, G. Mark Sumpter, Tom Trouwborst, Benjamin K. Wikner, and Douglas Wilson.

Book Synopsis Making Sense of Motherhood by : Beth M. Stovell
Download or read book Making Sense of Motherhood written by Beth M. Stovell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-02-02 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motherhood provides a crucial place for exploring human life and its meaning. Within motherhood lies a deep tension between the pain, crisis, and association with death in motherhood and the joy, transformation, and life in motherhood. Few metaphors in Scripture (or in life) stand so firmly between life and death, love and loss, and joy and deep pain. After all, motherhood's meaning in part comes again and again at these crucial crossroads. Thus, motherhood has powerful implications for our biblical and theological understanding. Bringing together Jewish and ecumenical Christian scholars from North America, Oceania, and South America, this edited volume provides biblical and theological perspectives on understanding motherhood. The authors reflect upon a selection of biblical texts, systematic theologians, and Christian spiritual traditions to dialogue with the experience of maternity in its diverse manifestations. The purpose of the book is to provide essays that--through these biblical and theological lenses--engage the question of motherhood today, from the experience of pregnancy and birth, to raising children, to losing children and coping with grief. In this way, this volume helps to "make sense" of the complexity of motherhood.
Book Synopsis The Matriarchs in Genesis Rabbah by : Katie J. Woolstenhulme
Download or read book The Matriarchs in Genesis Rabbah written by Katie J. Woolstenhulme and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Katie J. Woolstenhulme considers the pertinent questions: Who were 'the matriarchs', and what did the rabbis think about them? Whilst scholarship on the role of women in the Bible and Rabbinic Judaism has increased, the authoritative group of women known as 'the matriarchs' has been neglected. This volume consequently focuses on the role and status of the biblical matriarchs in Genesis Rabbah, the fifth century CE rabbinic commentary on Genesis. Woolstenhulme begins by discussing the nature of midrash and introducing Genesis Rabbah; before exploring the term 'the matriarchs' and its development through early exegetical literature, culminating in the emergence of two definitions of the term in Genesis Rabbah – 'the matriarchs' as the legitimate wives of Israel's patriarchs, and 'the matriarchs' as a reference to Jacob's four wives, who bore Israel's tribal ancestors. She then moves to discuss 'the matriarchal cycle' in Genesis Rabbah with its three stages of barrenness; motherhood; and succession. Finally, Woolstenhulme considers Genesis Rabbah's portrayal of the matriarchs as representatives of the female sex, exploring positive and negative rabbinic attitudes towards women with a focus on piety, prayer, praise, beauty and sexuality, and the matriarchs' exemplification of stereotypical, negative female traits. This volume concludes that for the ancient rabbis, the matriarchs were the historical mothers of Israel, bearing covenant sons, but also the present mothers of Israel, continuing to influence Jewish identity.

Book Synopsis Women in the Ministry of Jesus by : Ben Witherington
Download or read book Women in the Ministry of Jesus written by Ben Witherington and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1987-10-22 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in the Ministry of Jesus is a study of both of Jesus' attitudes towards women as reflected in his words and deeds, and of the women who were part of his ministry, or who interacted with him according to the Gospel accounts. The book seeks to provide a balanced analysis of the relevant Biblical material, and also the historical background necessary to illuminate the setting of the Gospel events. Particular attention is given to related issues such as Jesus' views on marriage, the family and the single life, as well as his teaching on adultery, the laws of the clean and unclean and the sabbath. Witherington concludes that Jesus cannot be categorized neatly either as chauvinist or as feminist.
Book Synopsis The Legacy of Biblical Womanhood by : Susan Hunt
Download or read book The Legacy of Biblical Womanhood written by Susan Hunt and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2003-03-06 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Christian women are floundering-they are confused about what it means to be a Christian woman. Churches aren't sounding a clear call to biblical womanhood, much less teaching what it is. On top of that, precious few resources exist to help disciple women in the biblical image of womanhood. In this book Susan Hunt and Barbara Thompson call women to pass on a legacy of biblical womanhood to the next generation. Part One gives a defense of biblical womanhood, urging women to follow God's design. Part Two applies the principles of biblical womanhood to the stages of a woman's life. This includes a chapter about what it means to have a pilgrim's perspective through the final season of life on earth. Part Three appeals to churches to equip women to live out and to leave the legacy of biblical womanhood and includes practical guidance for ministering to women. When combined with Crossway's Spiritual Mothering, By Design, and The True Woman, this book will breathe new life into women's ministries in the church.

Book Synopsis Born Breech Into Covenant by : Carol Bosworth
Download or read book Born Breech Into Covenant written by Carol Bosworth and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each of us has a lifetime in which to discover our way to belong within our particular experience of times and events. Instead of an operating manual, our families and cultures give us expectations for who we are and what is our place in the world. This is the story of my journey into the calling of motherhood that I did not understand and struggled to reject. Conscientious wrestling with the experiences of motherhood eventually taught me how entangled love and anger can be and how suffering is inseparable from both. Finally a deeper call to love confronted me.

Book excerpt: In Problems Unique to the Holocaust, today's leading Holocaust scholars examine the difficult questions surrounding this terrible chapter in world history. Is it ever legitimate to betray others to save yourself? If a group of Jews is hiding behind a wall and a baby begins to cry, should an adult smother the child to protect the safety of the others? Should the men and women who took their own lives in the face of the Nazi onslaught be considered suicide or murder victims? How guilty are the bystanders who saw what was happening but did nothing to aid the victims of persecution?
Book Synopsis Vessel of Honor: The Virgin Birth and the Ecclesiology of Vatican II by : Brian A. Graebe
Download or read book Vessel of Honor: The Virgin Birth and the Ecclesiology of Vatican II written by Brian A. Graebe and published by Emmaus Academic. This book was released on 2021-08-18 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional claim that Mary remained a virgin during the very act of giving birth to Jesus is one of the least known and least understood aspects of Marian doctrine today. Has the contemporary Church retreated from this claim? In Vessel of Honor, Fr. Brian Graebe provides a solid introduction to the historical development of the doctrine and its reception in modern Catholic theology. He shows that, far from being responsible for its contemporary occlusion, the Second Vatican Council did much to reaffirm the traditional understanding of Mary’s perpetual virginity against its radical reinterpretation in the mid-twentieth century. Fr. Graebe demonstrates that the Council’s underappreciated work on Mary’s perpetual virginity must be seen as part of the legacy of Vatican II. Perhaps the most significant and timely contribution of this book is its illumination of the Council’s revival of the patristic association of Mary with the Church. At a time when many claim Vatican II weakened the Church’s commitment to Sacred Tradition, Vessel of Honor amplifies the Council’s clarion call to the Church to receive and preserve God’s revelation with virginal fidelity. Mary’s physical intactness is an icon of the deposit of faith. Vessel of Honor is an important book both for modern Mariology and for the proper reception of the Second Vatican Council.
Download or read book Just Love written by Ann Mongoven and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-13 with total page 882 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once upon a time, civic virtue described an ethic of political involvement for all citizens. As American democracy evolved, however, the public and private spheres separated. The latter became domesticated and disengaged from public life by an ideology based on gender and a "disinterested love" of neighbor. Private passion was to be isolated from public reason, private love from public justice. But it need not be so. Drawing on examples of ordinary heroes, Ann Mongoven argues for a transformed civic virtue that articulates "just love": passionate care for fellow citizens as such. By connecting theory to practice, Mongoven dramatizes the challenges raised through tangible political examples and lets ordinary heroes suggest the path toward civic renewal.
