Book excerpt: Excerpt from Course of Study for United States Indian Schools Careful studies in different parts of the country and in schools of different kinds indicate that children really do not study in school more than an average of three hours a day, whatever may be the length of the daily session. For children in the primary grades the time is less; for the high-school grades somewhat more. This includes not only the time children give to their studies out of class but the time when they are really attending their work in class. This indicates the desirability of reorganizing school work in such a way as to give three hours a day for intensive se 001 work of the ordinary type and to provide four or five hours of productive work suited to the capacities of the children either at home, in shops under good conditions, in outdoor gardens, or in shops provided by the school. Book excerpt: The last "Indian War" was fought against Native American children in the dormitories and classrooms of government boarding schools. Only by removing Indian children from their homes for extended periods of time, policymakers reasoned, could white "civilization" take root while childhood memories of "savagism" gradually faded to the point of extinction. In the words of one official: "Kill the Indian and save the man." Education for Extinction offers the first comprehensive account of this dispiriting effort. Much more than a study of federal Indian policy, this book vividly details the day-to-day experiences of Indian youth living in a "total institution" designed to reconstruct them both psychologically and culturally. The assault on identity came in many forms: the shearing off of braids, the assignment of new names, uniformed drill routines, humiliating punishments, relentless attacks on native religious beliefs, patriotic indoctrinations, suppression of tribal languages, Victorian gender rituals, football contests, and industrial training. Especially poignant is Adams's description of the ways in which students resisted or accommodated themselves to forced assimilation. Many converted to varying degrees, but others plotted escapes, committed arson, and devised ingenious strategies of passive resistance. Adams also argues that many of those who seemingly cooperated with the system were more than passive players in this drama, that the response of accommodation was not synonymous with cultural surrender. This is especially apparent in his analysis of students who returned to the reservation. He reveals the various ways in which graduates struggled to make sense of their lives and selectively drew upon their school experience in negotiating personal and tribal survival in a world increasingly dominated by white men. The discussion comes full circle when Adams reviews the government's gradual retreat from the assimilationist vision. Partly because of persistent student resistance, but also partly because of a complex and sometimes contradictory set of progressive, humanitarian, and racist motivations, policymakers did eventually come to view boarding schools less enthusiastically. Based upon extensive use of government archives, Indian and teacher autobiographies, and school newspapers, Adams's moving account is essential reading for scholars and general readers alike interested in Western history, Native American studies, American race relations, education history, and multiculturalism.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Course of Study for the Indian Schools of the United States: Industrial and Literary This course is designed to give teachers a definite idea of the work that should be done in the schools to advance the pupils as speedily as possible to usefulness and citizenship. The aim of the course is to give the Indian child a knowledge of the English language, and to equip him with the ability to become self supporting as speedily as possible. Methods of instruction and subjects of study have their limitations in value, and in view of the aims and purposes in educating the Indian, who is just starting on the road to civilization, such methods must be employed as will develop the various powers and capacities with which the child is endowed, and by systematic industrial training to give him the skill in various directions designed to be serviceable in meet ing the demands of active life, making him a willing worker as well as an inquiring learner. The value of education must be measured by its contribution to life interests, and it is our purpose to fit the Indian pupil for life. It is the privilege of the elementary school to awaken the child's capacities and quicken his interests, giving him an appreciation of his own pow ers, awakening his interest in and appreciation of things about him, cultivating a desire to cooperate with his fellow-men in the pursuit of knowledge and its achievement.
