This will, however, be of no avail unless the pupil in some way corrects his own errors. This may be done by re-writing, perhaps in some other way. Have exercises at least three times a week in sight reading of suitable selections not previously studied by the pupils. In all recitations, call upon dull, slow pupils as often as upon the bright, quick pupils. Insist upon absolute, prompt, and unquestioning obedience. Do not baby the pupils. Do not notice slight injuries nor small griefs. Teach pupils to be self-reliant and self - helpful. Insist that all such work as passing paper, pencils, books, collecting and arranging, etc., shall be quickly done by the pupils and not by the teacher. Insist that all pupils shall speak distinctly and loudly enough to be heard, and, more important, that the speech shall be articulate. On the other hand, the teacher should speak in a low, pleasant, distinct voice. Pupils are often encouraged in indistinct speech by standing too near the teacher during a recitation. Let every teacher guard against talking too much. The talking teacher is always an unskillful teacher. There should be the minimum amount of talk on the part of the teacher and the maximum on the part of the pupil. Your work is effective if you talk little and your pupils talk freely. His task was to arrive at a just estimate of the quality of the teaching, the course of study, and the supervision by the principals in the elementary schools. This task naturally led him to formulate standards of value, whereby the work of the elementary schools could be appraised. Rejecting the usual examinations as inadequate and unsatisfactory for his purpose, Professor McMurry has judged the quality of the teaching, course of study, and supervision by the degree to which all three are controlled by purposes of recognized value in daily living. His formulation of the standards on which his judgments are based and his detailed descriptions of the application of those standards to the actual work of the schools will be useful, we believe, to earnest teachers everywhere. Professor McMurry did not attempt to make these standards all-embracing, but they are so fundamental to satisfactory plans and procedure in elementary school work that, whatever limitations as to scope and variety they may possess, all good elementary schools must conform to them. It was so arranged as to show in the smallest possible compass as complete a picture of the development of the course of study as could be presented in written form. The work in all bound volumes was shown in the following sequence: 1. A typewritten monograph, or method sheet, treating of the subject illustrated in the volume. 2. The course of study in the subject in printed form. 3. The teacher's daily program. 4. Work from the pupils, showing all the written lessons given in the subject from the first lesson in September to the last lesson in June. Under this arrangement the methods followed, the course of study to be carried out, the time value of every subject, the results secured, were shown in every volume. There were ninety-two monographs, or method sheets, illustrating fully the methods followed in the different subjects taught. In all cases these monographs were written by the principals or teachers. These volumes of method sheets, illustrated as they were with the results secured from pupils, met with a generous commendation from the teachers of America. The making of the plan is the first step in the prepara tion work of the teacher. Many teachers do not believe in a plan. They have a program of the day's work and follow it mechanically. The architect or engineer who attempted a piece of work without carefully planning it would meet with poor results. The average teacher does not know how to make a plan. She confuses a program with a plan. The magazines say very little about it. If there is nothing new in material or method, teaching will lack interest to the pupil and teacher. Old plans cannot be used as the subject matter grows, e. G. History; it changes because of new discoveries, wars, develop ments of countries. The children's experiences vary. Some classes have excellent home conditions; others have only apologies for a home. The class that is poor in arithmetic needs twice as much time for that particular subject; children in foreign districts need more time for language and reading.
