Book excerpt: By means of matrix formalism any linearized form of wave equations in total fields, which govern the propagation in an inhomogeneous multi-mode system can be transformed to coupled mode form. Various types of mode definition and coupled mode equations are obtained. The nature and properties of a mode definition depend upon the choice of original wave equations in total fields. Furthermore the modes can be defined by means of 'homogeneous' and 'inhomogeneous' models. The physical interpretation of the mode representation is a very important part of a coupling theory. To illuminate this situation the case of longitudinal propagation in an inhomogeneous magneto-ionic is treated by means of homogeneous and inhomogeneous mode representations. (Author).

Book excerpt: Wave propagation in multi (n- )- mode inhomogeneous media, quite generally is described by an n:th order wave equation with variable coefficients, or sometimes, especially in the case of 4-mode systems, by coupled, second order wave equations in total fields. It is shown how the propagation phenomena can be analyzed in terms of first order, coupled mode amplitude equations. These first order equations become especially simple when the system has symmetric, or anti-symmetric properties. Since the methods developed are completely general, they can be applied to a multitude of wave propagation phenomena, involving coupling between waves of very different physical nature. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report deals with coupled waves, or coupled modes in arbitrary inhomogeneous n-wave systems. The partial waves, which make up the total wave field (of some physical kind) are expressed either in terms of so called inhomogeneous wave numbers, or of regular homogeneous ones (with corresponding phase integrals). The partial wave amplitudes are related to each other by first order coupled amplitude equations, with coupling coefficients depending upon the physical nature of the modes appearing in the system. These wave couplings are formally simple only when the partial waves have symmetrical properties of some kind (which is the case in many practical applications). A great number of coupled mode systems are analysed, compared, and discussed in considerable detail, with applications for example to magnetoionic, and to active (amplifying), inhomogeneous media. This report represents a major effort to relate all coupled wave phenomena to each other, irrespective of their particular physical background; in short to present a unified theory of multi-mode couplings in inhomogeneous media. Book Synopsis Integral Equation Methods for Electromagnetic and Elastic Waves by : Weng Cho Chew
Download or read book Integral Equation Methods for Electromagnetic and Elastic Waves written by Weng Cho Chew and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integral Equation Methods for Electromagnetic and Elastic Waves is an outgrowth of several years of work. There have been no recent books on integral equation methods. There are books written on integral equations, but either they have been around for a while, or they were written by mathematicians. Much of the knowledge in integral equation methods still resides in journal papers. With this book, important relevant knowledge for integral equations are consolidated in one place and researchers need only read the pertinent chapters in this book to gain important knowledge needed for integral equation research. Also, learning the fundamentals of linear elastic wave theory does not require a quantum leap for electromagnetic practitioners. Integral equation methods have been around for several decades, and their introduction to electromagnetics has been due to the seminal works of Richmond and Harrington in the 1960s. There was a surge in the interest in this topic in the 1980s (notably the work of Wilton and his coworkers) due to increased computing power. The interest in this area was on the wane when it was demonstrated that differential equation methods, with their sparse matrices, can solve many problems more efficiently than integral equation methods. Recently, due to the advent of fast algorithms, there has been a revival in integral equation methods in electromagnetics. Much of our work in recent years has been in fast algorithms for integral equations, which prompted our interest in integral equation methods. While previously, only tens of thousands of unknowns could be solved by integral equation methods, now, tens of millions of unknowns can be solved with fast algorithms. This has prompted new enthusiasm in integral equation methods.
