Book excerpt: LA PREMIERE PARTIE DE CE TRAVAIL EST CONSACREE A LA DEMONSTRATION D'UN THEOREME D'EXISTENCE ET D'UNICITE DE LA SOLUTION DU SYSTEME DE MAXWELL DANS LE CAS GENERAL, OU LES COEFFICIENTS SONT DES TENSEURS SYMETRIQUES DEFINIS POSITIFS, QUI DEPENDENT D'UNE FACON NON REGULIERE DE LA VARIABLE D'ESPACE. DANS CES CONDITIONS, LE MILIEU DE PROPAGATION POURRAIT ETRE AUSSI BIEN ISOTROPE QU'ANISTROPE. DANS LA SECONDE PARTIE, NOUS NOUS SOMMES INTERESSES A L'ETUDE ET AU DEVELOPPEMENT DE PLUSIEURS METHODES NUMERIQUES DANS UN DOMAINE ISOTROPE OU LES COEFFICIENTS PEUVENT ETRE DISCONTINUS ; NOUS AVONS ETUDIE DEUX METHODES DE TYPE VOLUMES FINIS, UNE BASEE SUR UN CALCUL DE FLUX DECENTRES, ET L'AUTRE BASEE SUR UN CALCUL DE FLUX CENTRES. NOUS AVONS EGALEMENT ADAPTE UNE METHODE D'ELEMENTS FINIS DITE GALERKIN DISCONTINUE, ET ENFIN UNE METHODE HYBRIDE VOLUMES FINIS / DIFFERENCES FINIES AVEC UNE ETUDE DE STABILITE DE CETTE DERNIERE. POUR DES RAISONS GEOMETRIQUES, NOUS AVONS CHOSI LES ELEMENTS DU MAILLAGE COMME VOLUMES D'INTEGRATION. DE NOMBREUSES VALIDATIONS ET COMPARAISONS NUMERIQUES ONT MONTRE QUE CES METHODES SONT BIEN ADAPTEES AU CAS HETEROGENE. NEANMOINS, IL SEMBLE QUE LA METHODE VOLUMES FINIS AVEC FLUX CENTRES ET UNE DISCRETISATION TEMPORELLE DE TYPE SAUTE-MOUTON EST LA PLUS OPTIMALE EN TERME DE COMPROMIS ENTRE LA QUALITE DES RESULTATS ET LE COUT EN TEMPS DE CALCUL. MOTS CLES: ELECTROMAGNETISME - EXISTENCE - UNICITE - VOLUMES FINIS - GALERKIN DISCONTINUE - HYBRIDE - STABILITE.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide an elementary yet systematic description of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations, their unique symmetry properties and their relation to Green’s function theory. Specifically, it introduces readers to the supercell technique for the solutions of the BdG equations, as well as other related techniques for more rapidly solving the equations in practical applications. The BdG equations are derived from a microscopic model Hamiltonian with an effective pairing interaction and fully capture the local electronic structure through self-consistent solutions via exact diagonalization. This approach has been successfully generalized to study many aspects of conventional and unconventional superconductors with inhomogeneities – including defects, disorder or the presence of a magnetic field – and becomes an even more attractive choice when the first-principles information of a typical superconductor is incorporated via the construction of a low-energy tight-binding model. Further, the lattice BdG approach is essential when theoretical results for local electronic states around such defects are compared with the scanning tunneling microscopy measurements. Altogether, these lectures provide a timely primer for graduate students and non-specialist researchers, while also offering a useful reference guide for experts in the field.

Book excerpt: W S HALL School of Computing and Mathematics, University of Teesside, Middlesbrough, TS1 3BA UK G OLIVETO Division of Structural Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Catania, Viale A. Doria 6, 95125 Catania, Italy Soil-Structure Interaction is a challenging multidisciplinary subject which covers several areas of Civil Engineering. Virtually every construction is connected to the ground and the interaction between the artefact and the foundation medium may affect considerably both the superstructure and the foundation soil. The Soil-Structure Interaction problem has become an important feature of Structural Engineering with the advent of massive constructions on soft soils such as nuclear power plants, concrete and earth dams. Buildings, bridges, tunnels and underground structures may also require particular attention to be given to the problems of Soil-Structure Interaction. Dynamic Soil-Structure Interaction is prominent in Earthquake Engineering problems. The complexity of the problem, due also to its multidisciplinary nature and to the fact of having to consider bounded and unbounded media of different mechanical characteristics, requires a numerical treatment for any application of engineering significance. The Boundary Element Method appears to be well suited to solve problems of Soil- Structure Interaction through its ability to discretize only the boundaries of complex and often unbounded geometries. Non-linear problems which often arise in Soil-Structure Interaction may also be treated advantageously by a judicious mix of Boundary and Finite Element discretizations.

Book excerpt: In this book, the authors discuss testing of ballast, including the strength, deformation and degradation aspects of fresh and recycled ballast under monotonic and cyclic loading. The effectiveness of geosynthetics in stabilising recycled ballast has also been examined. A new stress-strain constitutive model for ballast incorporating particle breakage is presented. Finally, a new range of particle gradations, balancing the strength and permeability requirements, has been proposed for future rail tracks. This book is intended as a reference text for final year civil engineering students and postgraduates, and for practicing railway engineers with the task of modernizing existing designs.
