This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This issue of International Financial Statistics (IFS), Country Notes presents, in two sections, brief information on the data published in IFS. The first section provides a description of the compilation techniques underlying selected area and world tables. The second identifies for each country the standard sources of the statistics and provides some explanatory material on each country’s data, including any breaks in the series. Country Notes is designed to be a companion volume to each version of IFS: the monthly print edition, the yearbook, the CD-ROM, and the Internet. It will normally appear as an annual volume and will be shipped with the print edition of the International Financial Statistics Yearbook during August each year. The aggregate Industrial Production Index for the industrial countries as a group is calculated by the Statistics Department from industrial and manufacturing production indices that are published in the country pages. Private commercial banks report data based on the Gregorian calendar, while state-owned commercial banks report data based on the Solar calendar. This results in differences in the interbank positions for other depository corporations.

Book Synopsis Maternal Employment and Child Health by : Yana van der Meulen Rodgers
Download or read book Maternal Employment and Child Health written by Yana van der Meulen Rodgers and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As women's labor force participation has risen around the globe, scholarly and policy discourse on the ramifications of this employment growth has intensified. This book explores the links between maternal employment and child health using an international perspective that is grounded in economic theory and rigorous empirical methods. Women's labor-market activity affects child health largely because their paid work raises household income, which strengthens families' abilities to finance healthcare needs and nutritious food; however, time away from children could counteract some of the benefits of higher socioeconomic status that spring from maternal employment. New evidence based on data from nine South and Southeast Asian countries illuminates the potential tradeoff between the benefits and challenges families contend with in the face of women's labor-market activity. This book provides new, original evidence on links between maternal employment and children's health using data associated with three indicators of children's nutritional status: birth size, stunting, and wasting. Results support the implementation and enforcement of policy interventions that bolster women's advancement in the labor market and reduce undernutrition among children. Scholars, students, policymakers and all those with an interest in nutritional science, gender, economics of the family, or development economies will find the methodology and original results expounded here both useful and informative.
Book Synopsis International Migration and Development in South Asia by : Md Mizanur Rahman
Download or read book International Migration and Development in South Asia written by Md Mizanur Rahman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In migration studies, the nexus between migration and development in the global South has been meticulously debated. However, a unanimous resolution to this debate has not been found, due to the ever-changing nature of international migration. This book advances knowledge on the global debate on the migration-development relationship by documenting experiences in a number of countries in South Asia. Drawing on the experiences of global South Asians, this volume documents the impact of migration on the social, economic, and political fields in the broader context of development. It also presents a regional experience by looking into the migration-development nexus in the context of South Asia, and analyses the role South Asian migrants and diaspora communities play in the South Asian society. Contributions from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, including sociology, anthropology, political science, international relations and economics, document the development implications of South Asian migration. Broad in scope in terms of contents, timeline of migration, and geographical coverage, the book presents empirically-based case studies involving India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Nepal and their emigrants living and working in different parts of the world. Going beyond reporting the impacts of migration on economic development by highlighting the implications of ‘social development’ on society, this book provides a fascinating contribution to the fields of Asian Development, Migration Studies and South Asian Studies.

The traditional notion of Himalayas as India’s frontiers and buffer is challenged by China. Despite various mechanisms to address border resolution there are violations and transgressions from China. Book Synopsis Nepal’s 2072 federal constitution: Implications for the governance of the agricultural sector by : Kyle, Jordan
Download or read book Nepal’s 2072 federal constitution: Implications for the governance of the agricultural sector written by Kyle, Jordan and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we explore the implications of Nepal’s new federal Constitution—passed in September 2015—for governance of the agricultural sector. Agriculture is the backbone of the Nepali economy, providing a livelihood for approximately two-thirds of the population, contributing one-third of the country’s GDP, and constituting more than half of the country’s exports. In transitioning from a unitary to a federal republic—with greater authority and autonomy granted to subnational units of government—it is of paramount importance to ensure that the agricultural sector is guided by coordinated planning, retains sufficient human capacity, and receives adequate fiscal resources. These considerations are particularly important given that the governance of Nepal’s agricultural sector already suffers from poor coordination, low human resources capacity, and inadequate financial resources. Addressing these issues may become more difficult under a federal structure. This paper begins by laying out the main challenges for agricultural governance in Nepal under the current structure. To do so, it relies on an original survey of 100 district agricultural and livestock officers in charge of local agricultural service delivery in Nepal as well as perspectives collected through more than two dozen semi-structured interviews with officials from the Ministry of Agricultural Development, the Ministry of Livestock Development, civil society, the private sector, and donors. Because Nepal is embarking on a pathway to more decentralized governance, which has been well-trodden by a number of other countries, the paper proceeds by examining five case studies, drawing lessons from India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, and South Africa. Based on these analyses, the paper offers policy recommendations on how the sector can be restructured to meet the constitutional provisions, while simultaneously ensuring that the government can deliver on its long-term objectives to develop the agricultural sector.
