Book Synopsis Social Organization in South China, 1911–1949 by : Yuen-fong Woon
Download or read book Social Organization in South China, 1911–1949 written by Yuen-fong Woon and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridging the collapse of the Confucian state and the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, the period 1911–49 is particularly fascinating to historians, anthropologists, sociologists and political scientists. Unfortunately, it is also a very confusing period, full of shifts and changes in economic, social, and political organizations. The social implications of these changes, and the relationships between officials on the subdistrict level, the unofficial leaders, and the bulk of the peasantry remain inadequately known. South China, which nurtured the Communist Party in its formative years, is a particularly interesting case. In this study I use the Kuan lineage of K’ai-p’ing as a case study to show the effects of demographic, economic, administrative, and educational changes after the Treaty of Nanking (1842) on patrilineal kinship as a principle of social organization in South China. Download or read book Beauvoir in Time written by Meryl Altman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beauvoir in Time situates Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex in the historical context of its writing and in later contexts of its international reception, from then till now. The book takes up three aspects of Beauvoir's work more recent feminists find embarrassing: "bad sex," "dated" views about lesbians, and intersections with race and class. Through close reading of Beauvoir's writing in many genres, alongside contemporaneous discourses (good and bad novels in French and English, outmoded psychoanalytic and sexological authorities, ethnographic surrealism, the writing of Richard Wright and Franz Fanon), and in light of her travels to the U.S. and China, the author uncovers insights more recent feminist methodologies obscure, showing that Beauvoir is still good to think with today.

Book excerpt: This book discusses the relationship, interaction and conflict between everyday life and various institutions in a specific village in North China, with a focus on the formal and informal legal systems. It vividly describes the village’s “legal construction problems” as well as the customs and laws, and such it can be seen as a historical and innovative comment on China’s problems. The book is based on the author’s field investigations assessing vast amounts of material concerning local organizations, formal and informal authorities, economic exchange, religious rituals, as well as interviews with villagers and numerous court files. It presents an in-depth exploration of “pluralism of authority” in China’s rural society, and examines how various authorities were formed. It also summarizes how various local disputes are resolved and discusses the villagers’ understanding of the concept of “justice.” Lastly, it suggests ways in which national law and local customs could communicate and collaborate.

Book Synopsis Chinese Landscapes by : Ronald G. Knapp
Download or read book Chinese Landscapes written by Ronald G. Knapp and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The studies collected in this volume were written by anthropologists, architects, geographers, historians, a sociologist, and a veterinary ecologist. Taken together they form an exceptionally coherent survey of Chinese villages, ranging from the dry north to the humid southeast and southwest of this vast country. Going beyond books on Chinese vernacular architecture that focus on individual dwellings, this work examines the village ensemble itself, the various settings for the habitation, work, and leisure of China's large rural population." "Discussions of design, spatial layout, physical setting, settlement patterns, geomantic principles (fengshui), and evolutionary patterns set the stage for eighteen village case studies. Many villages still preserve characteristics that evoke a respect for and understanding of "old China," while others expose the drastic metamorphosis of recent decades. Villages are examined as places, emphasizing that which is visible; each village has its own order and complex of natural and human elements. Chinese Landscapes, though it focuses on the physical appearance of individual villages as they are situated within the constellation that comprises the Chinese landscape, suggests much about more general social, economic, and political patterns."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
