Book excerpt: When you cross lines every day it can be hard to remember what’s real. And what’s not. Keeping Eva Tatum safe was supposed to be a simple task. One Brock Cassidy should have been able to do with one arm tied behind his back. All he had to do was pretend to be her boyfriend. Show up and bluff away the stalker giving the bull-headed business woman the creeps. But the more time he spends around her, the less faking Brock is doing. And protecting the woman who hired him becomes personal. Going to Alaska was just a precaution. One Eva was forced to take, whether she wanted to or not. It’s not like there was any real danger. She’d faced crazy once, and this was definitely not it. The situation was completely manageable. Harmless, really. But crazy has a way of showing up where it’s not wanted. Where it’s not allowed. And crazy isn’t allowed within one-hundred feet of Eva. She has the court documents to prove it. But papers don’t stop madmen intent of claiming what they believe should be theirs. And taking down anything in their way.

Book excerpt: Every sexual mindset, habit, or experience pursued by false beliefs is a “counterfeit climax” in the making, and they could be sabotaging the level of intimacy you are experiencing with your spouse right now. Deep-rooted insecurity from harsh teachings you may have learned about sex or unseen habits like pornography are leading factors to sexual dissatisfaction and false sexual expectations. It’s one thing to discover these hurts, but it’s an entirely different undertaking to talk about it with your spouse in a healthy way. With Dave and Ashley’s trusted advice and compassion, including their own transparent stories, The Counterfeit Climax is written for anyone who is single and working through painful experiences, engaged and learning about their significant other, or married and desiring to restore or deepen intimacy with their spouse. Each chapter will help guide you through talking about your sexual burdens so that you can find freedom and pleasure within your marriage. It’s time to confront all the lies the world has fed us about sex, romance, and relationships and pursue God’s design for the most fulfilling marriage and sex life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry has long been regarded as the least accessible of literary genres. But how much does the obscurity that confounds readers of a poem differ from, say, the slang that seduces listeners of hip-hop? Infidel Poetics examines not only the shared incomprensibilities of poetry and slang, but poetry's genetic relation to the spectacle of underground culture. Charting connections between vernacular poetry, lyric obscurity, and types of social relations—networks of darkened streets in preindustrial cities, the historical underworld of taverns and clubs, the subcultures of the avant-garde—Daniel Tiffany shows that obscurity in poetry has functioned for hundreds of years as a medium of alternative societies. For example, he discovers in the submerged tradition of canting poetry and its eccentric genres—thieves’ carols, drinking songs, beggars’ chants—a genealogy of modern nightlife, but also a visible underworld of social and verbal substance, a demimonde for sale. Ranging from Anglo-Saxon riddles to Emily Dickinson, from the icy logos of Parmenides to the monadology of Leibniz, from Mother Goose to Mallarmé, Infidel Poetics offers an exhilarating account of the subversive power of obscurity in word, substance, and deed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Counterfeit Politics, David Kelman reassesses the political significance of conspiracy theory. Traditionally, political theory has sought to banish the “paranoid style” from the “proper” domain of politics. But if conspiracy theory lies outside the sphere of legitimate politics, why do these narratives continue to haunt political life? Counterfeit Politics accounts for the seemingly ineradicable nature of conspiracy theory by arguing that all political statements ultimately take the form of conspiracy theory. Through careful readings of works by Ernest Hemingway, Ricardo Piglia, Thomas Pynchon, Don DeLillo, Jorge Luis Borges, Ishmael Reed, Jorge Volpi, Rigoberta Menchú, and Ángel Rama, Kelman demonstrates that conspiracy narratives bear witness to an illegitimate or “counterfeit” secret that cannot be fully recognized, understood, and controlled. Even though the secret is not authorized to speak, this “silence” is nevertheless precisely what gives the secret its force. Kelmangoes on to suggest that all political statements—even those that do not seem “paranoid”—are constitutively illegitimate or counterfeit, since they always narrate this unresolved play of legitimacy between an official or authorized plot and an unofficial or unauthorized plot (a “complot”). In short, Counterfeit Politics argues that politics only takes place as “conspiracy theory.”

Book excerpt: The problems this book discusses are the same now as they were 25 years ago: unemployment, poor housing, inadequate facilities, poverty, racism, violence. What is the function of a school in such a situation? Although many schools hold reformist ideals, their practice is constrained by organisational demands. School organisation is based upon a coercive theory of social control which is intolerant of expressions of individuality by teachers and pupils. Needs for individuality may be mistaken for deviance, and deviance is at least in part produced by, or exacerbated by, school organisation. The author maintains that schooling is therefore largely maladjusted to the needs of individuals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boring Formless Nonsense intervenes in an aesthetics of failure that has largely been delimited by the visual arts and its avant-garde legacies. It focuses on contemporary experimental composition in which failure rubs shoulders with the categories of chance, noise, and obscurity. In these works we hear failure anew. We hear boredom, formlessness, and nonsense in a way that gives new purchase to aesthetic, philosophical, and ethical questions that falter in their negative capability. Reshaping debates on failure as an aesthetic category, eldritch Priest shows failure to be a highly dubious concept. The book frames recent experimental composition as a deviant kind of sound art whose affective and formal elements reflect on current issues in contemporary culture, and offers analyses of musical works and performance practices that are rarely heard, let alone considered as significant cultural phenomena - showing the role that obscurity and the esoteric have in articulating current cultural realities. Ambitious in content and experimental in its approach, Boring Formless Nonsense will challenge and fracture your views on failure, creativity, and experimental music.

Book excerpt: Since the Middle Ages, literature has portrayed the economic world in poetry, drama, stories and novels. The complexity of human realities highlights crucial aspects of the economy. The nexus linking characters to their economic environment is central in a new genre, the "economic novel", that puts forth economic choices and events to narrate social behavior, individual desires, and even non-economic decisions. For many authors, literary narration also offers a means to express critical viewpoints about economic development, for example in regards to its ecological or social ramifications. Conflicts of economic interest have social, political and moral causes and consequences. This book shows how economic and literary texts deal with similar subjects, and explores the ways in which economic ideas and metaphors shape literary texts, focusing on the analogies between economic theories and narrative structure in literature and drama. This volume also suggests that connecting literature and economics can help us find a common language to voice new, critical perspectives on crises and social change. Written by an impressive array of experts in their fields, Economics and Literature is an important read for those who study history of economic thought, economic theory and philosophy, as well as literary and critical theory.

While we would like to believe that the choices God offers us are good and will look much different from the ones that the devil presents, the reality is that sometimes we have difficulty distinguishing between good choices and bad choices. The enemy works really hard in disguising himself as an angel of light, attempting to deceive us into making bad decisions. For every authentic blessing God desires to give you, the devil will offer you a surrogate in its place. Getting Rid of Counterfeits reveals the enemys plan to fool you. It exposes the fake relationships, mentors, jobs, and mind-sets that the devil offers to keep you in bondage. Getting Rid of Counterfeits is truly an eye-opener!
