Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atong is a Tibeto-Burman language spoken in Northeast India and Bangladesh. In this dictionary, Seino van Breugel provides a rigorous, well-illustrated and well-referenced lexical description of the language, making this book of great interest and value to general linguists, typologists, as well as area specialists and cultural anthropologists. Comprising not only of an Atong-English, but also an English-Atong dictionary, as well as semantic lexica, this volume is one of the most thorough lexical descriptions of a Bodo-Garo language to date. The grammatical lexica allow the reader quick access to lists of members of the various Atong word classes, collocations and idiomatic expressions. The grammatical compendium makes this book self-contained, while its many references link it to the rest of the author’s corpus on the Atong language. The appendix of photos not only provides visual illustrations to many of the Atong dictionary entries, but also offers the reader a glance at the physical environment in which the language is spoken.

Book excerpt: The book is an effort of a twenty year old boy Yuvraj Singh Thakur, who tries to pave his way of ideas, amidst of the political, cultural and regional changes. The book talks about the idea of nationalism of Bharat through the eye of a young brain. The book argues to follow the Indic ideas over the Western ideas, it also provides disagreement to the idea of secularism rather emphasis over the culture of Vasudeva Kutumbkam. Also the book talks about the author's disagreement to the idea of "Ganga Jamuni Tehzeeb''. The idea that "our identities are to a large extent shaped by the nation state. The thin lines dividing Nationalism, Patriotism and Chauvinism are often blurred. We look at the world primarily in terms of diverse nationalities and people we interact with are categorised as ‘We' and ‘They’. We define friends and enemies and neutral alliance accordingly", is the core of book. In this monograph Yuvraj has made a serious effort to find his way through a bewiildring maze of ideas, historical events, comments made by others scholars to get a grasp of what Nationalism means.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English Heart, Hindi Heartland examines Delhi’s postcolonial literary world—its institutions, prizes, publishers, writers, and translators, and the cultural geographies of key neighborhoods—in light of colonial histories and the globalization of English. Rashmi Sadana places internationally recognized authors such as Salman Rushdie, Anita Desai, Vikram Seth, and Aravind Adiga in the context of debates within India about the politics of language and alongside other writers, including K. Satchidanandan, Shashi Deshpande, and Geetanjali Shree. Sadana undertakes an ethnographic study of literary culture that probes the connections between place, language, and text in order to show what language comes to stand for in people’s lives. In so doing, she unmasks a social discourse rife with questions of authenticity and cultural politics of inclusion and exclusion. English Heart, Hindi Heartland illustrates how the notion of what is considered to be culturally and linguistically authentic not only obscures larger questions relating to caste, religious, and gender identities, but that the authenticity discourse itself is continually in flux. In order to mediate and extract cultural capital from India’s complex linguistic hierarchies, literary practitioners strategically deploy a fluid set of cultural and political distinctions that Sadana calls "literary nationality." Sadana argues that English, and the way it is positioned among the other Indian languages, does not represent a fixed pole, but rather serves to change political and literary alliances among classes and castes, often in surprising ways.

Book excerpt: About the Book ROOTED IN HARD FACTS AND THE MESSY POLITICAL REALITY OF INDIA, WHOLE NUMBERS AND HALF TRUTHS USES NUMBERS TO INTERROGATE AND BRING THE COUNTRY TO LIFE. How do you see India? Fuelled by a surge of migration to cities, the countryʼs growth appears to be defined by urbanisation and by its growing, prosperous middle class. It is also defined by its progressive and liberal young, who vote beyond the constraints of identity, and paradoxically, by an unchecked population explosion and rising crimes against women . Is it, though? In 2020, the annual population growth was down to under 1 per cent. Only thirty-one of hundred Indians live in a city today and just 5 per cent live outside the city of their birth. As recently as 2016, only 4 per cent of young, married respondents in a survey said they had a spouse belonging to a different caste group. Over 45 per cent of voters said in a pre-2014 election survey that it was important to them that a candidate of their own caste wins elections in their constituency. A large share of reported sexual assaults across India are actually consensual relationships criminalised by parents. And surprisingly, spending more than Rs 8,500 a month puts you in the top 5 percent of urban India. In Whole Numbers and Half Truths, data-journalism pioneer Rukmini S. draws on nearly two decades of on-ground reporting experience to piece together a picture that looks nothing like the one you might expect. There is a mountain of data available on India, but it remains opaque, hard to access and harder yet to read, and it does not inform public conversation. Rukmini marshals this information—some of it never before reported—alongside probing interviews with experts and ordinary citizens, to see what the numbers can tell us about India. As she interrogates how data works, and how the push and pull of social and political forces affect it, she creates a toolkit for data, a blueprint to understand the changes of the last few years and the ones to come. This is a timely and wholly original intervention in the conversation on data, and with it, India.

Book excerpt: Re-Tyred is an evocation of India as the author has experienced it as a volunteer in rural areas and on the streets of Kolkata, with beautiful photographs throughout. In Himachal Pradesh, in magnificent scenery of snow-clad peaks and forested hillsides, the children were as poor as those in Rajasthan, and equally keen to learn. In Kolkata exists the deep gulf between rich and poor, living side-by-side. The author recalls being impressed by the aspirations of street children she taught, but saddened by traumas suffered by children who had been rescued by the volunteer organisation. Despite their poverty, the energy and resilience of the village and street people was inspiring. The book touches upon the more sinister aspects of life in poorer areas such as child marriage, violence and lack of opportunity, and in stark contrast describes the colourful and exuberant celebrations of middle-class neighbours in Kolkata, after the author spent four weeks living with a bourgeois Indian family in Jaipur. Re-Tyred paints a vivid and enticing picture of India as a country teeming with life and enormous vitality, a place where happiness doesn’t depend on having everything you want or need, appealing to readers of travel writing and memoirs.
