Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton Waste Its Production, Manipulation and Uses In spite of the tremendous effects of the Great War on the cotton waste industry in all its connections, the original contents of the first edition of this work have now needed only the addition of a few footnotes. War-time conditions attracted intense interest to the uses of cotton waste, and the author has been gratified to learn that this treatise has played no mean part in enlightening many people on matters demanding practical attention in regard to cotton waste and its treatment. Condenser cotton waste spinning has extended and is extending all over the cotton textile districts of the world. While the revisions of the first edition of this treatise have been almost nil, the book has been greatly enlarged by the addition of chapters dealing with many important matters omitted from, and giving extended treatment to matters not sufficiently dealt with, in the first edition. The book has filled a place of its own in textile literature and the author has endeavoured to increase its value to the industry by adding new chapters. The thanks of the author and publishers are heartily accorded to the various machine making firms who have kindly aided in the illustrations and descriptions. In every case names of firms have been stated in the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from 1914 Illustrated and Descriptive Catalog of Whitin Cotton Waste Machinery and of Various Systems of Working Cotton Waste This catalog is intended to bring before the thoughtful consideration of textile manufacturers the processes and machinery required for the Reclamation of Cotton Waste. The economical and profitable disposal of the waste products of a cotton manufacturing plant has become a problem of the greatest importance to manufacturers on account of the prevailing high prices of cotton and labor necessary to convert it into marketable goods. The reclamation of the waste products of a mill affords simple means for the manufacturer to reduce his manufacturing expense to a minimum. To meet the demands of progressive manufacturers for a line of machinery for reclaiming their waste products, we have developed and placed on the market machines that have proven themselves particularly well adapted for such work. On the following pages illustrations and descriptions are given of the machines required in both the Coiler and Condenser Systems of Reclamation of Waste. Estimates of machinery required for either system will be gladly furnished if samples of the waste to be used, average counts desired and production per week are given. In addition to the machines herein described, we call the attention of manufacturers to the other machines we build, viz.: Picking Machinery, Revolving Flat Cards, Sliver and Ribbon Lap Machines, Combers, Railway Heads, Drawing Frames, Roving Machinery, Spinning Frames, Twister Frames, Spoolers, Reels, Quillers, Plain and Fancy Looms, Duck Looms, Dobbies and Warp Stop-Motions. Descriptive catalogs of any or all of these machines may be had on application. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton: From the Raw Material to the Finished Product The magnitude of the Cotton Spinning and Manufac turing industry of Great Britain, in which it is estimated that something like of capital is invested, and which employs a vast army of skilled workpeople, is colossal. Few industries have brought forth such a bountiful wealth of inventive genius - expediting and perfecting production by intricate mechanical processes, and penetrating the secrets of chemistry, bringing forth from her hidden treasuries the art hand-maidens of the textile craft. Cotton goods, in myriad styles and quali ties, are found in our Home Markets, and are carried over the seas and oceans to clothe the races of the world. Obviously, a knowledge of the true sequence of the pro cesses in this great industry is of importance. In this work I have sought to give an intelligent, technical explanation - not too technical, I hope - of the Spinning and Manufacturing Systems in their very latest forms. This description is prefaced by a short historical sketch of the more primitive method of cloth production. Particulars are given as to the growth of cotton, and the adaptability of the various staples for different counts of yarn, and this is followed by a chapter on the foundation and development up to the present time of the British Cotton Growing Association, a national movement of vast importance for our textile trade. The description of cloth production leads on to a short account of the system of merchandise. The great trade organisations of the workpeople and the Conferences between masters and men which have resulted in Treaties of Peace and the establishment of methods of. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on the Culture and Manufacture of Cotton In the second place, I consider Mr. Lawrence totally incompetent to dis cuss such a subject and it is his name alone that gives his Opinions respect ing it any weight. This I pledge myself to prove to the letter, before Ihave done with him. He is neither a mechanic nor a practical manufacturer; and is probably not much better qualified to make up a correct judgment on the subject in question, than he would be to command a ship Of war. In the third place, his pretended review is entitled to no sort Of respect, because. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton: Its Cultivations, Marketing, Manufacture, and the Problems of the Cotton World Nor is there any plant with a history more mar velous or more romantic - more suggestive of the legend and mythology of its Oriental home where it first began to serve mankind. If Frank Norris had lived in the South instead of California, what an Epic of the Cotton he might have given us what a story of Cotton, responding only to the warmth of a Southern sun, and yielding a richer fleece than ever Jason dreamed of Cotton, whose influence did most to bring us an alien race from Africa, and then did most to perpetuate in Ameri ca the institution of human slavery; Cotton, on which a Dixie Land, the Land of Cotton, once built its hopes while it waged one of the greatest wars of modern times; Cotton, which helped the vanquished people to their feet again, and now bids fair to restore them to a proud position in wealth and industry! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton and Cotton Manufacture: A Brief Analysis for the Layman The importance of cotton in the civilized life of today is prob ably but vaguely realized by the majority of people. In this country we consume raw cotton at the rate of about twenty-six pounds per capita each year, which if translated to yards of cloth and other fabric, would make a strip longer than the distance from the earth to the moon, and a yard wide all the way. Perhaps the best illustration of the importance of this fibre can be found in the plight of Germany during the recent War. In Spite of her accumulated stores of cotton and her domestic production of wool, hemp and ax, in spite of the fact that considerable cotton filtered through in the early months of the blockade, her population at the end of four years was wearing clothes made of paper. Tablecloths, nap kins, towels, sheets, underwear, hosiery, not to mention draperies, were practically unobtainable. Bandages and surgical dressing were made of paper; gun-cotton had to be displaced with Ersatz, as did sail cloth, tire duck, and numberless other commodities.
