The interplay among the cosmic rays, the interstellar medium in which they propagate, and supernovae has been investigated for decades; yet these studies have generated as many enigmas as they have resolved. These puzzles continue to challenge observers and theorists alike. th This volume is devoted to selected lectures presented in the 7 Course of the International School of Cosmic-Ray Astrophysics in Erice, Italy in July-August, 1990. Alltogether, some 400 participants have attended the biennial sessions of this School since its inception in 1978. As its name implies, the School deals with cosmic-ray phenomena viewed in the broader context of astrophysics. Students and Lecturers are attracted from many astrophysical disciplines. Like earlier courses in this series, the present one was organized under the aegis of the Ettore Majorana Centre as a NATO Advanced Study Institute. Given the diverse scientific backgrounds of the students, it was deemed useful to include lectures at the introductory level. Other lectures and contributed talks were at a more advanced level, featuring new developments. If this collection is useful pedagogically, and if it provides some stimulus and information for the mature research worker, then the editors will feel well rewarded.

The study focuses on the X-ray and gamma radiation from the cosmic ray electrons and protons in the supernova remnant as well as the emission from the surrounding interstellar gas measured by the NANTEN2 4-m radio telescope at Nagoya University. The gamma rays show a good spatial correspondence with the interstellar gas, which for the first time provides strong evidence of the acceleration of cosmic ray protons. Additionally, the author determines that an interaction between the supernova shockwaves and interstellar gas, referred to as “shock-cloud interaction,” promotes the efficient acceleration of cosmic ray electrons in the supernova remnant. The book reveals that the interstellar gas plays an essential role in producing the high-energy radiation and cosmic rays, offering vital new insights into the origin and behavior of galactic cosmic rays.

The most popular hypothesis is that supernova remnants are the source of Galactic cosmic rays. The observation of several remnants in gamma rays, which are indeed expected as the result of hadronic interactions between the cosmic rays accelerated at the remnant and the interstellar medium, is probably the strongest support to this idea. However, another mechanism, leptonic, can also account for the the observed gamma--ray émission, and in many cases the situtation remains ambiguous. Instead of relying on a case--by--case study, we adopt here a different approach and consider a population study using Monte Carlo simulations. We investigate the the number of supernova remnants that a given telescope can expect to detect, starting from the hypothesis that supernova remnant are the sources of Galactic cosmic rays. We find that our predictions are in aggrement with current observation results, such as the one of H.E.S.S, thus providing a novel consistency check for the supernova remnant paradigm for the origin of Galactic cosmic rays. The developed model can then be used to investigate the population of remnants that the next generation of telescope can expect to detect, such as the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). Finally, we discuss on the hope of detection of neutrinos fron supernova remnants, which would testify that hadronic mechanisms are at stake, and could show unequivocally that supernova remnants are the sources of Galactic cosmic rays.

Even in more modern times, since the discovery of SN1885A in S Andromeda which ?gured in the important “island universe” discussions of the 1920’s, the puzzle of supernovae (SNe) has played an important role in astrophysics. Only with the seminal work of Fritz Zwicky and Walter Baade in the 1930’s did we begin to understand the di?erences between novae and SNe and the importance of SNe as the fonts of energy for the interstellar medium and as drivers of chemical evolution in galaxies. As recently as the 1940’s and 1950’s the early days of radio astronomy were heavily in?uenced by the familiar names of Cassiopeia A and Taurus A, two young supernova remnants, and two Nobel prizes have been awarded for discovery and study of a related phenomenon, pulsars. In spite of the great age of the study of SNe, since at least the Chinese records of SN185and probably earlier, the ?eld is, in fact, very young having only attracted a large devoted following since the spectacular Type II SN1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud, the ?rst naked-eye SN in more than 400 years.
