Book excerpt: Silver Shiner (Notropis photogenis), a species at risk in Canada, is listed as Special Concern under Schedule 3 of the Species at Risk Act and is assessed as Threatened by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC). The species is relatively understudied in Canada but is known to occur in four watersheds in southern Ontario: Sixteen Mile Creek; Bronte Creek; Grand River; and, Thames River. Sampling was conducted using a bag seine in each of the four watersheds to gain a better understanding of the types of habitats utilized by Silver Shiner. The objectives of this study are to determine Silver Shiner distribution and habitat preference throughout its Canadian range.--Document.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silver Shiner (Notropis photogenis) was assessed in May 2011 as Threatened by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC). There are four separate populations (little to no mixing of individuals) of Silver Shiner in Canada. These will be referred to as the Grand River population, the Thames River population, the Bronte Creek population, and the Sixteen Mile Creek population. There are three components to each RPA: an assessment of species status, the scope for recovery, and scenarios for mitigation and alternatives to activities. Here, we contribute to components two and three by identifying population sensitivity, and quantifying recovery targets, required habitat, current abundance, and risk of extinction, with associated uncertainty, for Canadian populations of Silver Shiner.--Document.

[...] Because of the potential for extended below-ground dormancy, and because the number of flowering stems varies among individuals, there is a high degree of uncertainty associated with estimates of Small White Lady's-slipper abundance and therefore population trends are difficult to assess. [...] Most subpopulations are not adequately protected, either due to lack of awareness (often due to changes in land ownership/management) or lack of information and resources to manage habitat for the benefit of Small White Lady's-slipper. [...] COSEWIC MANDATE The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) assesses the national status of wild species, subspecies, varieties, or other designatable units that are considered to be at risk in Canada.
