Book excerpt: Corrosion Prevention and Protection: Practical Solutions presents a functional approach to the various forms of corrosion, such as uniform corrosion, pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, galvanic corrosion, stress corrosion, hydrogen-induced damage, sulphide stress cracking, erosion-corrosion, and corrosion fatigue in various industrial environments. The book is split into two parts. The first, consisting of five chapters: Introduction and Principles (Fundamentals) of Corrosion Corrosion Testing, Detection, Monitoring and Failure Analysis Regulations, Specifications and Safety Materials: Metals, Alloys, Steels and Plastics Corrosion Economics and Corrosion Management The second part of the book consists of two chapters which present: a discussion of corrosion reactions, media, active and active-passive corrosion behaviour and the various forms of corrosion, a collection of case histories and practical solutions which span a wide range of industrial problems in a variety of frequently encountered environments, including statues & monuments, corrosion problems in metallurgical and mineral processing plants, boilers, heat exchangers and cooling towers, aluminum and copper alloys, galvanized steel structures as well as hydrogeological environmental corrosion This text is relevant to researchers and practitioners, engineers and chemists, working in corrosion in industry, government laboratories and academia. It is also suitable as a course text for engineering students as well as libraries related to chemical and chemical engineering institutes and research departments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Concrete Solutions series of International Conferences on Concrete Repair began in 2003, with a conference held in St. Malo, France in association with INSA Rennes, followed by the second conference in 2006 ( with INSA again, at St. Malo, France), and the third conference in 2009 (in Padova and Venice, in association with the University of Padova). Now in 2011, the event is being held in Dresden in Germany and has brought together some 112 papers from 33 countries. Whereas electrochemical repair tended to dominate the papers in earlier years, new developments in structural strengthening with composites have been an increasingly important topic, with a quarter of the papers now focusing on this area. New techniques involving Near Surface Mounted (NSM) carbon fibre rods, strain hardening composites, and new techniques involving the well established carbon fibre and polyimide wrapping and strengthening systems are presented. Seventeen papers concentrate on case studies which are all-important in such conferences, to learn about what works (and what doesn’t work) on real structures. Thirteen papers are devoted to new developments in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). Other topics include service life modelling, fire damage, surface protection methods and coatings, patch repair, general repair techniques and whole life costing. This book is essential reading for anyone engaged in the concrete repair field, from engineers, to academics and students and also to clients, who, as the end user, are ultimately responsible for funding these projects and making those difficult decisions about which system or method to use.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The corrosion resistance of three microalloyed steels and two conventional reinforcing steels in concrete was evaluated. The microalloyed steels contain concentrations of chromium, copper, and phosphorus that, while low, are significantly higher than used in conventional reinforcing steel. Two of the microalloyed steels contain amounts of phosphorus that exceed the amounts allowed in ASTM specifications (ASTM A 615), while the other microalloyed steel has normal amounts of phosphorus. One of the conventional steels and the three microalloyed steels are heat treated by the Thermex process, which includes quenching and tempering of the steel immediately after rolling, while the other conventional steel is hot-rolled. The study was undertaken because earlier tests on similar steels indicated that the Thermex-treated, microalloyed steel corrodes at only one-half the rate of conventional reinforcing steel. The relative corrosion rate dropped to one-tenth if both steels were epoxy -coated. In the current study, the reinforcing steels were tested using two rapid evaluation tests, the corrosion potential and corrosion macrocell tests, and three bench-scale tests, the Southern Exposure, cracked beam, and ASTM G 109 tests. The corrosion potential, corrosion rate, and mat-to-mat resistance are used to evaluate the steel. Tension and bending tests were performed to evaluate the effect of the microalloying and heat treatment on the mechanical properties of the reinforcing steel.

The current study showed that technological changes have provided many new ways to prevent corrosion and there has been improved use of available corrosion management techniques. However, better corrosion management can be achieved using preventive strategies in non-technical and technical areas.
