Book Synopsis Teacher Quality, Instructional Quality and Student Outcomes by : Trude Nilsen
Download or read book Teacher Quality, Instructional Quality and Student Outcomes written by Trude Nilsen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers insights from modeling relations between teacher quality, instructional quality and student outcomes in mathematics across countries. The relations explored take the educational context, such as school climate, into account. The International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement’s Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is the only international large-scale study possessing a design framework that enables investigation of relations between teachers, their teaching, and student outcomes in mathematics. TIMSS provides both student achievement data and contextual background data from schools, teachers, students and parents, for over 60 countries. This book makes a major contribution to the field of educational effectiveness, especially teaching effectiveness, where cross-cultural comparisons are scarce. For readers interested in teacher quality, instructional quality, and student achievement and motivation in mathematics, the comparisons across cultures, grades, and time are insightful and thought-provoking. For readers interested in methodology, the advanced analytical methods, combined with application of methods new to educational research, illustrate interesting novel directions in methodology and the secondary analysis of international large-scale assessment (ILSA).
Book Synopsis The Relationship Between Reading and Mathematics Achievement of Middle School Students as Measured by the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills by : Federico Hernandez
Download or read book The Relationship Between Reading and Mathematics Achievement of Middle School Students as Measured by the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills written by Federico Hernandez and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the strength and direction of the relationship between the three different levels of reading achievement on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills and the mathematics achievement of middle school students in a large urban school district in southwestern United States as assessed by the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills. A correlational research design was used to study this relationship. The participants were current high school students who were administered both the Reading and Mathematics sections of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills in their sixth, seventh, and eighth grade year in middle school (N = 652). A bivariate analysis using the Pearson product-moment correlation technique was used to determine the strength and direction of the relationship between the three different levels of reading achievement and mathematics achievement as measured by the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills. Students who achieved a Commended performance and a Met Standard performance in the Reading section of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade, all yielded a correlation coefficient that was statistically significant with a p-value .01. This also held true for the overall relationship in sixth (r = + .481 and N =652), seventh (r = + .537 and N = 652), and eighth (r = + .385 and N = 652) grade. These results suggest that there is a moderate to strong relationship between the reading achievement and mathematics achievement of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students who achieved a Commended or Met Standard performance on the reading section of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills. The seventh grade students who achieved a Did Not Meet Standard in the Reading section of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, N = 53, yielded a correlation coefficient, r = + .325, which was statistically significant with a p-value

This book was released on 2011 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This professional inquiry explores the relationships between students’ reading comprehension and their performance on a grade six math word problem test, and it evaluates the readability of the wording for word problem test items. Students’ results on the 2008 Alberta Provincial Achievement Test for Part B, Word Problems, were compared to their reading levels on the Canadian Achievement Test and the Gates MacGinitie Reading Tests, to evaluate the correlation between reading comprehension and word problem performance. The researcher calculated the readability of test questions and invited students to comment on the difficulty of the wording for each question. This investigation revealed a strong positive correlation between the students’ levels of reading comprehension and their scores on the math Provincial Achievement Test Part B. Analysis of scores for individual questions on the math test revealed some surprising anomalies that deserve investigation in a later study. The author shares insights that she will apply to her own teaching to assist students to improve their reading comprehension abilities and their math word problem success. She also provides advice for test construction and recommends further investigation of this research question with a larger sample size."--P. ii.

Book Synopsis Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic by : James M. Schofield

Book excerpt: "Mathematics and language have been treated as two exclusive domains in education, yet a growing amount of evidence indicates that language ability correlates with mathematical achievement and that incorporating literacy in the mathematics classroom will actually enhance achievement. This thesis synthesizes research in the literature that ranges from 1980 to 2011, and contains mostly empirical studies of the relationship between literacy and mathematics. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze whether different modes of communication- reading, writing, and spoken- when incorporated in the classroom will improve mathematics achievement. Further, the different modes of communication are compared to evaluate if one mode seems to more strongly affect learning. This research shows that literacy ability has large effects on mathematics in general. Writing in the classroom may have the strongest effect on conceptual understanding. Reading seems to correlate highly with math achievement. Finally, elicited self-explanations have been shown to increase mathematical understanding."--leaf 4.
