Book Synopsis The Chemical Physics of Surfaces by : S. Morrison

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * At the present stage of development of surface science, there has seemed to be a need for a book-length review spanning the disciplines of surface physics and surface chemistry-a review to summarize and show the con nection between the observations from each discipline. The various results and theories, derived on the one hand from studies of the physical, electronic, and optical properties of surfaces and on the other hand from studies of the chemical activity of surfaces, supplement each other in the search for a realistic model of the surface. The improved understanding possible with such an interdisciplinary approach has been confirmed by recent develop ments which cannot be classified as either surface chemistry or surface physics. Specifically, recent new experimental techniques and quantum mechanical models have provided a much more accurate picture of the nature of the electronic energy levels (bonding orbitals) present at a solid surface. With this more accurate picture we are now able to reconcile the various chemical and physical models that appeared in the early literature on surfaces. The objective of this work has therefore been to describe the results and current models of surface science spanning a broad gray area between surface physics and surface chemistry with some overlap into each of these disciplines. Relevant aspects of surface chemistry are discussed; we cover chemical interactions where bonding and electronic properties dominate, but stop short of specialized topics such as surfactants or liquid/liquid interfaces.

Download or read book Advanced Materials in Catalysis written by Frank Bolz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced Materials in Catalysis is a collection of materials that discusses various catalysts. The book presents the physical and chemical properties that indicate that a particular class of materials may be of catalytic interest. The text first covers bimetallic catalysts, and then proceeds to examining the catalytic properties of compounds such as graphite intercalation compounds; oxides with the scheelite structure; and synthetic layered silicates and aluminosilicate. The book also covers reduction catalysts, biological catalysts, and monolithic catalyst supports. The selection will be of great use to students and practitioners of chemistry, particularly those who are involved in research studies that investigate materials problems in catalysis.

Book Synopsis Catalysis Progress in Research by : Fred Basolo
Download or read book Catalysis Progress in Research written by Fred Basolo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conference on Catalysis was held under the auspices ofthe NATO Science Committee as part of its continuing effort to promote the useful progress of science through international cooperation. The Science Committee Conferences are deliberately designed and struc tured to focus expert attention on what is not known, rather than what is known. The participants are carefully selected to bring together a variety of complementary viewpoints. Through intensive group discussion, they seek to reach agreement on conclusions and recommendations for future research which will be of value to the scientific community. We believe that the endeavour has been particularly successful in the pre sent case. Some twenty-five papers, either in the form of reprints or specially written reviews were contributed by the participants for advance circulation, to outline the state-of-the art in the three areas ofheterogeneous, homogeneous and metalloenzyme catalysis and to focus attention on key problems. The availability of this background material precluded the need for lengthy intro ductory presentations and permitted rapid initiation of interdisciplinary discussions. All participants gave generously and enthusiastically of their expertise and effort during the week of the meeting, of ten long past normal bedtime hours, and we extend to them our deep gratitude.

Book Synopsis Electronic Processes on Semiconductor Surfaces during Chemisorption by : T. Wolkenstein

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hands are useless if there are no eyes to see what is obvious." -M. V. Lomonosov Dear Reader, I invite you to open this book and step on the semiconductor surface, where the processes that form the subject of the book come into play. The surface of the semiconductor is attracting more and more interest among researchers, in fact researchers in two different fields. These are notably the physicists and engineers engaged in research in semi conductor physics and the making of semiconductor devices. The entire industry of semiconductor instruments hinges on the problem of the surface. The quality of semiconductor devices, whose use is growing steadily, depends essentially on the properties of the surface. The instability of these properties and their uncon trollable alterations with temperature and under the influence of environmental conditions result in a lack of stability in the performance of semiconductor devices, hence the high percentage of waste in their industrial production. The methods used in factory laboratories to prevent such waste are largely empirical. The properties of the surface, the nature of the physicochemical processes that take place on it, and the role of environmental factors still remain obscure. A major task of the semiconductor industry is to learn to control the properties of the surface.
