Book excerpt: Fracture toughness data were obtained for three constructional alloy steels having yield strengths of 958, 752, and 552 MPa (139, 109, and 80 ksi) (HY-130, A517(F) [Unified Numbering System UNS K11576], and HY-80, respectively) by testing conventional Charpy V-notch (CVN), fatigue-precracked Charpy, and plane-strain fracture toughness KIc specimens. The data were used to evaluate proposed correlations between KIc data and data obtained with Charpy-type specimens and to develop additional correlations. Of the five correlations examined, a method based on standard CVN results that incorporated a temperature shift to relate impact to static data gave slightly better estimates of KIc values in the transition temperature region than the others. However, the best results over the widest temperature range were obtained from a correlation method based on a J integral estimation that predicts KIc values from the results of slow-bend tests of fatigue-precracked Charpy-type specimens.

Book Synopsis Dynamic Fracture Toughness Parameters for HY-80 and HY-130 Steels and Their Weldments by :
Download or read book Dynamic Fracture Toughness Parameters for HY-80 and HY-130 Steels and Their Weldments written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lower bound dynamic fracture toughness parameters for HY-80 and HY- 130 steel and their weld metals are identified. Specific values of the parameters K sub Id and K sub Im obtained from direct measurements are reported together with estimates inferred from the large body of Charpy energy, nil ductility transition temperature and dynamic tear energy measurements. The emphasis is on reasonable lower bound values at 30 F, the lowest anticipated service temperature, for use in elastodynamic analyses of crack growth initiation, propagation, and arrest in ship structures. For these conditions, it has been found that the ratio K sub Id/RHO sub Y is approximately sq root of 1 in. Consequently, HY-80 plate appears to be substantially more resistant to fracture under dynamic loading than are the other three grades examined.
Book Synopsis A Fracture-Toughness Correlation Based on Charpy Initiation Energy by : DM. Norris
Download or read book A Fracture-Toughness Correlation Based on Charpy Initiation Energy written by DM. Norris and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An upper-shelf correlation between fracture toughness and the energy required to initiate cracking (CVNi) in the Charpy V-notch specimen is presented. The correlation is obtained using data on 23 steels with variations in yield strength of 447 to 1696 MPa, fracture toughness of 40 to 353 kN/m, and Charpy toughness (CVN) of 22 to 192. The toughness correlation based on all the data using either CVNi or CVN is about the same and is also about equal to that of the Rolfe-Novak-Barsom (RNB) correlation. If only those data with fracture toughness less than 200 kN (1140 psi-in.) are used, the CVNi correlation is better than that obtained by RNB or one based on CVN data alone.

Book Synopsis The Use of Pre-Cracked Charpy Specimens to Determine Dynamic Fracture Toughness by : W. L. Server
Download or read book The Use of Pre-Cracked Charpy Specimens to Determine Dynamic Fracture Toughness written by W. L. Server and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of an instrumented impact hammer on pre-cracked Charpy V specimens has led to an inexpensive method for determining the dynamic fracture toughness, K sub Id. Measurements were made on A-533 steel over a range of temperature ( -125 to + 75F) at a loading rate K clot approximately equal to 1,000,000 ksi (in. to the 1/2 power)/sec. The data were found to be in excellent agreement with those obtained by other workers on much larger specimens. Analysis of the data leads to a new method for estimating the NDT temperature, which may be of practical value in nuclear reactor surveillance programs. (Author).
Book Synopsis Drop-weight Tests of Experimental Hy-130/150 Steels by : S. T. Rolfe
Download or read book Drop-weight Tests of Experimental Hy-130/150 Steels written by S. T. Rolfe and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important requirements of HY130/150 steels and weldments is high fracture toughness. For laboratory screening of experimental steels, fracture toughness can be most conveniently determined from Charpy V-notch impact tests. However, fracture-toughness values obtained from drop-weight and explosion-bulge tests are also important, and correlations between these tests and the Charpy V-notch test have not been established for steels having yield strengths in the range 130 to 150 ksi. Therefore, the Applied Research Laboratory conducted Charpy V-notch and drop-weight tests of 1/2- and 1-inchthick plates of four experimental HY-130/150 steels (3 3/4Ni-Cr-Mo-V, 5 1/4Ni-Cr-Mo-V, 5Ni-CrMo-V, and 7 1/2Ni-Cr-Mo steels) and HY-80 steel (heat-treated to a yield strength of 150 ksi) to determine the relation between Charpy V-notch and drop-weight test criteria and to determine the best method for obtaining fracture-toughness values to screen experimental HY-130/150 steels. The results indicated that for HY-130/150 type steels, the drop-weight test nil-ductility temperature (NDT) can be estimated from Charpy Vnotch test data by determining the temperature corresponding to an energy absorption of about 40 ft-lb, a shear fracture of about 50 percent, or a lateral expansion of about 20 mils.
