Download or read book Relationship Satisfaction, Outness, and Social Support Among Cohabitating Lesbian Couples written by Carrie Berta and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A small sample was obtained, which was overrepresented by highly educated Caucasian women of mid to high socioeconomic status in cohabitating relationships of five or more years duration. Results indicated a positive correlation between social support and relationship satisfaction, though no relationship was found between outness and relationship satisfaction. A more modern conceptualization of outness is recommended, as the construct assessed by currently established measures does not appear to capture the construct of outness in contemporary American culture. Other recommendations for future research include obtaining funding to incite participation and a larger sample, qualitative analyses of the three constructs, an examination of social support for lesbian couples (e.g., Family of Choice versus family or origin), and examination of generational or cohort effects.

Book Synopsis Lesbian Love and Relationships by : Suzanna Rose
Download or read book Lesbian Love and Relationships written by Suzanna Rose and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the broad range of healthy lesbian attitudes and behaviors in love, friendship, self-image, and society! This pioneering book makes a revolutionary assumption: that lesbian and bisexual women are normal, if not average. Instead of focusing on which family or genetic quirks might produce lesbians, these studies turn attention to describing the healthy ways lesbians interact with each other, with heterosexual women, and with society. The result is a significant exploration of uncharted territory.Lesbian Love and Relationships examines the lives of lesbian and bisexual women from adolescence to old age, addressing issues of class and race as well as sexual orientation. It encompasses theory, empirical research, and memoir on such diverse topics as physical appearance, cross-generational friendships, butch-femme issues, and lesbian sexuality. It also looks at such difficult and painful issues as lesbian domestic violence and the impact of homophobia on lesbian couples.Lesbian Love and Relationships asks personal, political, and psychological questions, including: how do young lesbians find each other? what makes successful lesbian relationships last? how does social class affect African-American lesbian relationships? what was it like growing up lesbian in the South during World War II? does “lesbian bed death” exist? This compendium offers exciting original research in a neglected field. Lesbian Love and Relationships is an essential resource for anyone interested in women’s lives and sexuality as well as scholars in the field.

Book Synopsis Minority Stress and Emotional Intimacy Among Individuals in Lesbian and Gay Couples by : Andrea Guschlbauer
Download or read book Minority Stress and Emotional Intimacy Among Individuals in Lesbian and Gay Couples written by Andrea Guschlbauer and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Individuals in lesbian and gay (LG) couples face a particular stress that is unique from their heterosexual counterparts: minority stress, the increased stress experienced as a result of living in an environment that is stigmatizing of their sexual orientation and identity. Research focused on LG individuals demonstrates far-reaching health implications of minority stress. However, there is limited literature examining the effects of minority stress on health among individuals in same-sex couples. Among heterosexual couples, stress negatively impacts health, relationship functioning, and intimacy. Emotional intimacy in particular has been linked to psychological and physical health in heterosexual couples. Among individuals in LG couples, emotional intimacy has been shown to be the most important predictor of relationship satisfaction. Taken together, there is reason to suppose that there is a relationship between minority stress, emotional intimacy, and relationship satisfaction among individuals in LG couples. As such, this study examined the interconnectedness of these three constructs as well as related health implications among 181 individuals in same-sex relationships. It was firstly hypothesized that experiences of minority stress would negatively predict relationship satisfaction and positively predict psychological distress, health symptoms, and health risk behavior. Secondly, it was hypothesized that emotional intimacy would positively predict relationship satisfaction, health symptoms, and health behavior and negatively predict psychological distress. Thirdly, experiences of minority stress were hypothesized to negatively predict emotional intimacy. Finally, it was hypothesized that emotional intimacy would mediate the relationship between minority stress and outcomes (relationship satisfaction, psychological functioning, health status, and health behavior). Hypothesis one was partially supported. Minority stress was not significantly related to relationship satisfaction or health outcomes, though experiences of discrimination and internalized homonegativity were significantly and positively correlated with psychological distress and the use of substances other than alcohol. In addition, the variable of experiences of discrimination was significantly and positively correlated with health symptoms.Hypothesis two also was partially supported. Emotional intimacy positively predicted relationship satisfaction but not any of the health outcomes.Hypothesis three also was partially supported. Internalized homonegativity and sexual orientation concealment were negatively related to emotional intimacy. However, experiences of discrimination were not related to emotional intimacy. Hypothesis four also was partially supported. Emotional intimacy mediated the relationship between internalized homonegativity and relationship satisfaction, health symptoms, and alcohol use. Emotional intimacy also mediated the relationship between sexual orientation concealment and relationship satisfaction. Emotional intimacy did not mediate the relationship between experiences of discrimination and rejection and outcomes or between the composite variable of the three minority stress components and outcomes.Findings from the current study highlight the importance of emotional intimacy among individuals in LG couples. The presence of emotional intimacy is associated with a decrease in the negative effect of internalized homonegativity and sexual orientation concealment on relationship satisfaction. Areas for future research are explored, and implications for future research, clinicians, and policy makers are explicated. " --
Book Synopsis The Handbook of Sexuality in Close Relationships by : John H. Harvey
Download or read book The Handbook of Sexuality in Close Relationships written by John H. Harvey and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2004-04-26 with total page 1075 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although sexuality is an integral part of close romantic relationships, research linking these two constructs has been less systematic than other areas pertaining to close relationships. To date, researchers in communication, sociology, family studies, psychology, and psychiatry, have made significant advances in both of these fields. The editors' goal is to integrate this research into one volume. They bring together major scholars from the diversity of fields working on close relationship topics to examine past contributions and new directions in sexuality. The emphasis is on theoretical integration and stimulation, methodological rigor, and critical analysis. This volume explores: *early sexual experiences and their impact on late life sexuality; *how life's stresses impact sexuality and satisfaction with closeness; *the affect of postpartum depression on sexuality; and *the relationship between control, power, anger, as well as revenge and sexual processes in couples. The Handbook of Sexuality in Close Relationships is intended for students and researchers in the disciplines of social, clinical, developmental, and health psychology; family studies; counseling; and interpersonal, family, and health communication. An excellent reference in advanced courses in close relationships taught in psychology, communications, sociology, anthropology, and family studies, the material in Part V will also appeal to clinical psychologists, health professionals, and policymakers.
Book Synopsis Relationship Satisfaction by : Ellen Louise Keyt
Download or read book Relationship Satisfaction written by Ellen Louise Keyt and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results revealed partial support for these hypotheses. However, heterosexual men did not demonstrate any correlation between self-esteem and spirituality. Lesbian couples did not demonstrate a correlation between spirituality and self-esteem. In addition, lesbian couples demonstrated a surprising negative correlation between current religious involvement and relationship satisfaction. Financial difficulties were posited as a possible confounding variable affective lesbian couples, where were more likely to be in the lower ranges of reported household income. Regression analysis revealed that early religious involvement was not a significant predictor of relationship satisfaction for any of the couple groups.
Book Synopsis Interpersonal Relationships by : Diana Jackson-Dwyer
Download or read book Interpersonal Relationships written by Diana Jackson-Dwyer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a more specific focus than the all-encompassing textbook, each title in the Foundations of Psychology series enables students who are new to psychology to get to grips with a key area of psychological research, while also developing an understanding of basic concepts, debates, and research methodologies. In this book Diana Jackson-Dwyer presents an introductory survey of classic and recent research on relationships and the theories that underpin them. The book starts with a brief overview of the place of relationships within the history of psychology and of their evolutionary roots: our need to belong, to attach and to affiliate. After a look at methodology, it considers different types of relationships: kinship, friendship, loving and mating. Theories are advanced to explain the formation, maintenance and breakdown of relationships. The book draws on a wide array of contemporary research, and covers issues ranging from rising divorce rates to cultural variations in mating patterns, the issue of gay marriage, and the effect of the internet on relationships. Each chapter contains numerous pedagogical features which will help students to engage with the material: Chapter-specific learning objectives and summaries of key points Study boxes presenting reflective exercises, research questions, and issues for discussion Glossaries and suggestions for further reading Assuming no prior knowledge of the subject, Interpersonal Relationships provides an accessible and up-to-date overview of this vibrant area of psychology. The book will be ideal reading for students who are new to higher-level study - whether at school, college or university, and will also be useful for first-year undergraduate students taking introductory courses in psychology.

This book was released on 2008-12-11 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debra A. Hope The Nebraska Symposium on Motivation is steeped in history and tradition. Over the years the series editors have striven to maintain the highest standards of a- demic excellence and to highlight some of the most important trends in psychology. Perusing the chapter titles in the first 53 volumes shows the shifting emphasis as the science of psychology developed in the latter half of the twentieth century. All of the most important topics are there — drive theory, social learning, the cognitive revolution, developing perspectives on understanding individual differences and the role of culture, and the increasing role of neuroscience. The key figures are there as well — Harry Harlow, Kenneth Spence, Raymond Cattell, George Kelly, Albert Bandura, Carl Rogers, Carroll Izard, Walter Mischel, Sandra Bem, Sandra Spence, Herbert Simon, David Barlow, and many others. In late 2004, I met with a group of interested graduate students, and together we developed a proposal to join this long and proud tradition with a volume on sexual orientation. Our motivation stemmed, in part, from the events around us. The same-sex m- riage debate was covered extensively in the media, reflecting a rapid and important discussion about sexual orientation that we were having (and are still having) as a society. Psychology and related fields have much to offer on many of the issues raised in this debate.
