Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hit-to-hit correction for range error arising from ionospheric refraction has been developed for the COBRA DANE radar. First a FORTRAN procedure was developed to compute monthly median refraction corrections over the field of view. These were provided to the radar in the form of equivalent look-up tables. A FORTRAN program was developed for the radar computed index values for each target position (azimuth, elevation, and range) and a correction was determined for each radar hit. This procedure removed about 75 percent of the monthly mean ionospheric effect. A further reduction was then made by using first and update factor determined by the Air Force Global Weather Central and then a more accurate update derived from a two-frequency calibration made by the radar itself. These procedures are shown to be capable of removing up to 90 percent of the mean ionospheric effect.

Book Synopsis Considerations Relative to Adapting TRANSIT Observations to Predicting Radar Range Correction by : Allen, Richard S.
Download or read book Considerations Relative to Adapting TRANSIT Observations to Predicting Radar Range Correction written by Allen, Richard S. and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncertainties in the output data of SPACE TRACK radars caused by the variability of the ionosphere may be reduced 25 to 50 percent through the use of predictions of monthly median effects supplied by AWS/GWC. For some ADCOM missions this degree of correction is inadequate and a further reduction in error is necessary. This may be gained by using local measurements of ionospheric parameters, such as total electron content which may be obtained from TRANSIT satellite passes, to adapt the model ionosphere. An algorithm is proposed which uses data from sequential TRANSIT passes over a limited portion of the field of view of each ADCOM radar, to adapt the AWS/GWC prediction for the entire field of view. From the available TRANSIT data, it is estimated that the rms refraction error may be reduced by a factor of 3 to 4 by this technique. The principle problem which must be addressed by an adaptive technique is the inherent temporal and spatial variability of the ionosphere. The expected day-to-day variability is about 20 to 25 percent of the monthly median over a solar cycle for stations from the equator to auroral latitudes. In using TRANSIT data to adapt a local estimate of the ionospheric refraction correction, it is suggested that: 1. The adaptive techniques proposed, using TRANSIT data, should be tested against archive data. 2. Techniques using other sensors of the ionosphere, such as measurements of total electron content to synchronous satellites, should be developed and tested against archive data, and the results should be compared with the technique using TRANSIT data before a final method of correction is adapted. Book Synopsis Radar Principles for the Non-Specialist by : John C. Toomay
Download or read book Radar Principles for the Non-Specialist written by John C. Toomay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What This Book Is This book is about radar. It will teach you the essentials of radar, the underlying principles. It is not like an engineering handbook which pro vides detailed design equations without explaining either derivation or rationale. It is not like a graduate school textbook which may be abstruse and esoteric to the point of incomprehensibility. And it is not like an anthology of popular magazine articles which may be gaudy but superfi cial. It is an attempt to distill the very complex, rich technology of radar into its fundamentals, tying them to the laws of nature on one end and to the most modern and complex systems on the other. Who It's For If your work requires you to supervise or meet as coequals with radar systems engineers or designers, this book will allow you to understand them, to question them intelligently and perhaps to provide them with a perspective (a dispassionate yet competent view) that they lack. If you are trained in another discipline but have been made the man ager of a radar project or a system program that has one or more radars as sub-systems, this book will provide you with the tools you need, not only to give your team members confidence, but also to make a substantive technical contribution yourself.
Book Synopsis AU-18 Space Primer by : Air Command Staff College
Download or read book AU-18 Space Primer written by Air Command Staff College and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US National Space Policy released by the president in 2006 states that the US government should "develop space professionals." As an integral part of that endeavor, "AU-18, Space Primer", provides to the joint war fighter an unclassified resource for understanding the capabilities, organizations, and operations of space forces. This primer is a useful tool both for individuals who are not "space aware"-unacquainted with space capabilities, organizations, and operations-and for those who are "space aware," especially individuals associated with the space community, but not familiar with space capabilities, organizations, and operations outside their particular areas of expertise. It is your guide and your invitation to all the excitement and opportunity of space. Last published in 1993, this updated version of the Space Primer has been made possible by combined efforts of the Air Command and Staff College's academic year 2008 "Jointspacemindedness" and "Operational Space" research seminars, as well as select members of the academic year 2009 "Advanced Space" research seminar. Book Synopsis 100 Years of Radar by : Gaspare Galati
Download or read book 100 Years of Radar written by Gaspare Galati and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers fascinating insights into the key technical and scientific developments in the history of radar, from the first patent, taken out by Hülsmeyer in 1904, through to the present day. Landmark events are highlighted and fascinating insights provided into the exceptional people who made possible the progress in the field, including the scientists and technologists who worked independently and under strict secrecy in various countries across the world in the 1930s and the big businessmen who played an important role after World War II. The book encourages multiple levels of reading. The author is a leading radar researcher who is ideally placed to offer a technical/scientific perspective as well as a historical one. He has taken care to structure and write the book in such a way as to appeal to both non-specialists and experts. The book is not sponsored by any company or body, either formally or informally, and is therefore entirely unbiased. The text is enriched by approximately three hundred images, most of which are original and have been accessed by detailed searches in the archives.
Book Synopsis Beyond the Kalman Filter: Particle Filters for Tracking Applications by : Branko Ristic
Download or read book Beyond the Kalman Filter: Particle Filters for Tracking Applications written by Branko Ristic and published by Artech House. This book was released on 2003-12-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most tracking applications the Kalman filter is reliable and efficient, but it is limited to a relatively restricted class of linear Gaussian problems. To solve problems beyond this restricted class, particle filters are proving to be dependable methods for stochastic dynamic estimation. Packed with 867 equations, this cutting-edge book introduces the latest advances in particle filter theory, discusses their relevance to defense surveillance systems, and examines defense-related applications of particle filters to nonlinear and non-Gaussian problems. With this hands-on guide, you can develop more accurate and reliable nonlinear filter designs and more precisely predict the performance of these designs. You can also apply particle filters to tracking a ballistic object, detection and tracking of stealthy targets, tracking through the blind Doppler zone, bi-static radar tracking, passive ranging (bearings-only tracking) of maneuvering targets, range-only tracking, terrain-aided tracking of ground vehicles, and group and extended object tracking.
