Book excerpt: The atmospheric effects on microwave radiation were investigated by using a ground based radar and a fixed beacon combination at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. With this radar-beacon combination, the approximate range and elevation angle between the two sites were 45 miles and 1 degree respectively. This investigation compares three methods for correcting the radar elevation angle error caused by the atmosphere. One method uses the measured meteorological parameters sampled by radiosonde instruments while the second and third methods utilize an exponential vertical structure fixed by a measured surface refractive index value. The radar range as the argument and height difference between observer and target is treated as the parameter in the range observations. With the aid of these corrections, true (slant) range and map distance may be found. These corrections have been computed for sixteen type atmospheres above a spherical earth. In these atmospheres the index of refraction attenuates exponentially with height. The type atmospheres cover four base indices and four exponential attenuation rates. These charts supplement the set presented in WADC TR 59-619.

This has led to requirements for more accurate corrections for atmospheric refraction than is provided for by the four-thirds earth's radius approximation. The prime purpose of this report is to survey the state-of-the-art of reflection problems and to indicate specific correction procedures as related to height finding radars. A number of atmospheric models are presented. However, the exponential atmospheric model has been shown to be fairly representative of the index of refraction profile in the average case. Deviations from the average case are also presented. It is indicated that the range error and elevation angle error both contribute to the computation of the overall height error resulting from atmospheric refraction of the radio waves tracking a target within the troposphere. However, the role played by the elevation angle error dominates the contribution.
