Book Synopsis Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Cardiometabolic Diseases by : Peter Kokkinos
Download or read book Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Cardiometabolic Diseases written by Peter Kokkinos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-18 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the links between physical activity (PA), cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), and cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. It presents an overview of the role of PA and CRF in the prevention and management of risk factors associated with cardiometabolic diseases such as hypertension, peripheral vascular disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, dyslipidemia, obesity, and atherosclerosis. In addition, it explores how these risks vary with different populations such as the elderly and people of various racial backgrounds. The book also highlights risks associated with exercise and presents a prescription for appropriate and efficacious exercise to minimize risk and maximize health benefits for the heart. Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Prevention and Management of Cardiometabolic Disease is an essential resource for physicians, exercise physiologists, medical students, residents, fellows, nurses, and researchers in cardiology, cardiorespiratory fitness, exercise science, health promotion and disease prevention, public health, and epidemiology.

Book Synopsis Honolulu Heart Program by : Abraham Kagan
Download or read book Honolulu Heart Program written by Abraham Kagan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-08-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Director of this study, Abraham Kagan, has comprehensively summarized the design and main finndings of the study in this book. The Honolulu Heart Program compared and contrasted ethnic Japanese men living in different cultural environments--Honolulu and mainland Japan--assessed their relative risk factors. The study supported many of the existing views on risk factors but also showed suprising trends. One of the trends shows moderate alcohol consumption is a preventative factor. In recent years the risk factors for cardiovascular diseases have become common knowledge. The recently completed Honolulu Heart Program is the largest targeted study to evaluate scientifically such risk factors.

This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 948 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiovascular, respiratory, and related conditions cause more than 40 percent of all deaths globally, and their substantial burden is rising, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Their burden extends well beyond health effects to include significant economic and societal consequences. Most of these conditions are related, share risk factors, and have common control measures at the clinical, population, and policy levels. Lives can be extended and improved when these diseases are prevented, detected, and managed. This volume summarizes current knowledge and presents evidence-based interventions that are effective, cost-effective, and scalable in LMICs.

Book Synopsis Sustaining physical activity following cardiac rehabilitation discharge by : Kelly R. Evenson
Download or read book Sustaining physical activity following cardiac rehabilitation discharge written by Kelly R. Evenson and published by RTI Press. This book was released on 2021-01-31 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because many patients reduce exercise following outpatient cardiac rehabilitation (CR), we developed an intervention to assist with the transition and evaluated its feasibility and preliminary efficacy using a one-group pretest–posttest design. Five CR patients were enrolled ~1 month prior to CR discharge and provided an activity tracker. Each week during CR they received a summary of their physical activity and steps. Following CR discharge, participants received an individualized report that included their physical activity and step history, information on specific features of the activity tracker, and encouraging messages from former CR patients for each of the next 6 weeks. Mixed model trajectory analyses were used to test the intervention effect separately for active minutes and steps modeling three study phases: pre-intervention (day activity tracking began to CR discharge), intervention (day following CR discharge to day when final report sent), and maintenance (day following the final report to ~1 month later). Activity tracking was successfully deployed and, with weekly reports following CR, may offset the usual decline in physical activity. When weekly reports ceased, a decline in steps/day occurred. A scaled-up intervention with a more rigorous study design with sufficient sample size can evaluate this approach further.

Book Synopsis Frailty and Cardiovascular Diseases by : Nicola Veronese
Download or read book Frailty and Cardiovascular Diseases written by Nicola Veronese and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to clarify the potential association between frailty and cardiovascular disease in older people. Covering the biological as well as the clinical point of view, it allows researchers and clinicians to discover the significance of this topic. The contributions cover the most important aspects in the potential relationship between frailty and cardiovascular disease. In particular, authoritative authors in this field have clarified the definition and the epidemiology of frailty and cardiovascular disease in older people. A large part of the volume is dedicated to the biological mechanisms of frailty and cardiovascular disease, trying to find those in common between these two conditions. Since this book is dedicated to both researchers and clinicians, we have proposed some chapters to the importance of comprehensive geriatric assessment in the evaluation and treatment of cardiovascular diseases and frailty. In this regard, the importance of geriatric evaluation in cardiac surgery for older people is well covered. Finally, the importance of cardiac rehabilitation and physical exercise is summarized, being, actually, the most important treatments for both frailty and cardiovascular disease. Written by many well-known and widely published experts in their respective fields, this book will appeal to a wide readership such as researchers in the field and clinicians, especially suited in geriatric medicine and cardiology who, every day, face frail older patients.
Book Synopsis Fitness Measures and Health Outcomes in Youth by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Fitness Measures and Health Outcomes in Youth written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-12-10 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical fitness affects our ability to function and be active. At poor levels, it is associated with such health outcomes as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Physical fitness testing in American youth was established on a large scale in the 1950s with an early focus on performance-related fitness that gradually gave way to an emphasis on health-related fitness. Using appropriately selected measures to collected fitness data in youth will advance our understanding of how fitness among youth translates into better health. In Fitness Measures and Health Outcomes in Youth, the IOM assesses the relationship between youth fitness test items and health outcomes, recommends the best fitness test items, provides guidance for interpreting fitness scores, and provides an agenda for needed research. The report concludes that selected cardiorespiratory endurance, musculoskeletal fitness, and body composition measures should be in fitness surveys and in schools. Collecting fitness data nationally and in schools helps with setting and achieving fitness goals and priorities for public health at an individual and national level.
Book Synopsis Textbook of Sports and Exercise Cardiology by : Axel Pressler
Download or read book Textbook of Sports and Exercise Cardiology written by Axel Pressler and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-08 with total page 1093 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a comprehensive, yet practically orientated overview of classic and novel sports cardiology topics, based on current evidence, guidelines, recommendations and expert experience. Numerous publications have provided guidance to these issues, but it has become increasingly difficult for both students and doctors to obtain a thorough, but practicable overview for optimal clinical care of athletes and patients. This book is intended as an educational work, filling the large gaps that are still present in the current educational guidelines for medical students and cardiology trainees. Textbook of Sports and Exercise Cardiology differs from other sports cardiology books by focusing on clear, practical recommendations based on the latest evidence, primarily targeting those who seek professional background information and education that can easily be transferred into everyday care.
