Download or read book Morning written by Walter D. Wetherell and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2002-01-22 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Alec Brown, a middle-aged biographer, takes as his subject broadcasting pioneer Alec McGowan, host of television’s very first wake-up show, “Morning,” the project is marked by a sinister obsession. For intertwined with McGowan’s life and the birth of the box is Brown's own family history. His estranged father, Chet Standish, was not only McGowan's best friend and "Morning" cohost, he was also the man who shot and killed McGowan on the air. Now dying of cancer, Standish is being released from prison into his son's care. W. D. Wetherell weaves together the story of McGowan's rise to television notoriety–back when the medium, and indeed the nation, seemed ripe with promise–and Brown's tenuous steps to better understand the love triangle that drove his father to violence. Morning is at once a riveting glimpse of an era gone by, a moving portrait of a family in turmoil, and a penetrating reflection on the rise of mass media. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Book Synopsis Dictionary of French Family Names in North America by : Marc Picard
Download or read book Dictionary of French Family Names in North America written by Marc Picard and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dictionary contains data not only on the origins of French surnames in Québec and Acadia, a great many of which eventually spread to many parts of North America, but also on those which arrived in the United States directly from various French-speaking European and Caribbean countries. In addition to providing the etymology of the original surnames, it also lists the multifarious variants that have developed over the last four centuries. A unique feature of this work in comparison to other onomastics dictionaries is the inclusion of genealogical information on most of the Francophone migrants to this continent, something which has been rendered possible not only by the excellent record-keeping in French Canada since the very beginnings of the colony, but also through the explosion of such data on the internet in the last couple of decades. In sum, this dictionary serves the dual purpose of providing information on the meanings of French family names on the North American continent, as well as on the migrants who brought them there.
Book Synopsis Cormier Genealogy by : Michael Melanson
Download or read book Cormier Genealogy written by Michael Melanson and published by . This book was released on 2021-02-24 with total page 643 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1644, Robert Cormier, a master ship carpenter, his wife, Marie Péraud, and their two young sons, Thomas and Jean, sailed on the Le Petit Saint-Pierre from La Rochelle, France, to Cape Breton (Nova Scotia). Robert was among the tradesmen hired to work at Fort St-Pierre (today, St. Peters). His three-year contract was the longest among the men and his salary of 120 livres a year was the second highest. He was also the only one to take his family with him. In the 1670s, Thomas Cormier, his wife, Marie-Madeleine Girouard, and their young family were among the pioneers who founded the colony of Beaubassin, Acadia. They settled in the village of Ouescoque (Amherst Point, Nova Scotia), a place the Cormier family called home for 80 years. In 1755, the forced deportation of the Acadian people tore families apart. While some Cormiers were deported and held prisoner in South Carolina and Georgia, others escaped into the woods only to experience the horrors of refugee camps. Cormier Genealogy: Generations 1 - 7 tells the story of these remarkable and resilient people from their first arrival in Acadia to their post-deportation resettlement in New Brunswick, Québec, Cape Breton, Louisiana, St-Pierre et Miquelon, and St-Domingue (Haiti). This well-documented, 643-page paperback includes a 5,900-person index, complete endnotes, and a full bibliography.

Download or read book Cyndi's List written by Cyndi Howells and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 890 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: REF Ths is a multi-title review. The titles include: 'Cyndi's List (880 pg)', 'Instant Information on the Internet (117 pg)', and 'Instant Information on the Internet (86 pg)' - Although Internet directories such as Howells's wildly popular site, (www.cyndislist. com), offer well-organized access to genealogy sites online, many researchers still want to plan searches with a book in hand. Now Howells (Netting Your Ancestors) has created a print version, with some exceptions, of her web site. Including over 100 categories and over 40,000 links (most with brief annotations), this book has something for nearly any genealogy-related topic that comes to mind.Schaefer's 'Instant Information' series offers pared-down compilations of basic information search sites. Her book on the United States categorizes web sites by state and includes vital records information sites, prominent research libraries and societies, indexes and databases, and general information sites. In the British Isles book, Schaefer discusses British counties and expands her lists to include major sites for churches and the Celtic language as well as a place-name index. All three books provide easy access to useful genealogy sites. While Howells strives for exhaustive coverage of genealogy links, Schaefer offers very general site lists. Though Howells's book comes with a solid price tag, the purchase of each new (and planned) title in Schaefer's series would quickly rack up the same price or more. Still, for those who want only a brief, focused guide, Schaefer's books are an economical alternative. Elaine M. Kuhn, Allen Cty. P.L., Fort Wayne, IN-
