Its research problem centers on the premise that urban poverty is underestimated in Egypt, in addition, the growing rate of 'urbanization' is increasing the vulnerability of women heads of households. The study is focused on Cairo's informal areas as they represent a shelter for millions of rural migrants to the city. Informal areas in Cairo generally called "ashwa'eyat" in Arabic are either stigmatized or rationalized, yet, the nature of their informality and proximity to the urban center, and sometimes, even government establishments make them a unique source for inquiry. The main research question that is posed by this research is an attempt to understand the impact of the vulnerable context on the livelihood coping strategies of women heads of households in those spaces that are autonomous from the state. This question is important in light of a historical moment in the Egypt that is challenging the relationship between the state and society, and the choice of this specific group is important because women face "double marginalization" in a vulnerable urban context. The thesis is using the sustainable livelihood approach as the foundational theoretical framework in approaching the subject of women heads of households in Cairo's informal settlements that fits under the bigger context of urban poverty. The study used a qualitative approach in gathering data from Izbet El Haggana, the study area and one of Cairo's largest informal settlements.

Despite enormous multiform humanitarian food aid interventions, the situation is far from improving. It is therefore not clear to what extend the armed conflict has affected household food security in the NW region of Cameroon as a whole and the Bamenda municipality. The effectiveness of livelihood responses in solving the problem cannot also be ascertained. Understanding the relationship between armed conflict and food insecurity (access and availability), associated perceptions, coping strategies and livelihood responses is therefore critical in managing food insecurity across the bord. Although research works on the relationship between food security and violent conflict have steadily increased, it is still an emerging research theme among economists, political scientists, and development researchers to look at livelihood responses and food security in a volatile environment, especially in the Bamenda municipality of the Northwest Region of Cameroon which has been experiencing an ongoing arm conflict since 2017. The main research question of this study is: To what extend has the ongoing socio-political crisis impacted on household food security and what is the sustainability of the livelihood coping strategies being employed in the Bamenda Municipality of the Northwest region of Cameroon?

This paper tries to investigate causes of livelihood vulnerability that rural households face and analyze coping strategies they apply. The analysis is done using data from household survey in Weradejo woreda of Halaba zone. The primary data was collected from 264 households, the secondary data was obtained from line office records and the review of related literature. The author then applies descriptive statistics and the econometrics model of multinomial logistic regression to identify the causes of vulnerability. Based on the descriptive analysis, the identified causes of households’ livelihood vulnerability are drought, farmland fragmentation, crop and livestock diseases, flooding, erratic rainfall, and shortage of agricultural inputs and shortage of capital. The capacity of the households and the community to cope with and recover from shocks remains low, despite the different strategies they adopt. The result of the multinomial logistic regression indicates that sex of the household head, age of household head, family size, and educational level of the household in schooling years, land size owned, pest/diseases, distance to market, and frequency of extension contact are the main determinants influencing the choice of the coping strategies by the respondents.

Book excerpt: Focusing on the vulnerability and resilience to economic shocks at the household level, this book draws on extensive research activities carried out in two Melanesia countries: the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. In particular, it identifies the household impacts of the recent food, fuel and economic crises. The contributors also examine resilience by identifying how households responded to these recent economic events in order to cope with their impacts. Findings indicate that households are vulnerable to a range of shocks and often struggle to cope with their impacts. Shocks are making it harder for households to meet their basic needs. Households in Melanesia are facing increasing demands for money, in particular for school fees, basic foodstuffs and customary obligations. Concurrently, there are limited domestic opportunities for formal employment. Traditional social support networks are strong and are an important form of resilience. However, there is evidence that they are disintegrating. Of particular focus are the gendered impacts. Women are found to bear a disproportionate share of the burden in adjusting to household shocks. The authors highlight key areas in which public policy and development programmes can reduce household vulnerability and increase their resilience to future economic shocks.

Free Food Distribution has been the most common approach of mitigating food insecurity among labour constrained households in times of drought. Coping with the effects of drought has not only proved to be a mammoth task for the government but a complicated mix of policy, strategy, capacity and political will. The research is a case study using mixed methods to examine the complications of household food security and mitigating effects of drought in labour constrained households in rural Zimbabwe at the same time examining the social construction of vulnerability by labour constrained households, role of state and non-state actors. The resilience and coping mechanisms of labour constrained households are also extensively examined in the context of household food security. The opportunities for transforming government drought mitigation interventions in to sustainable livelihoods base for household food security are examined. The government acknowledges that droughts have had varied impact on household food security depending on the nature of vulnerability of households. Labour constrained households have been regarded as the most vulnerable compared to the non-labour constrained households hence they have maintained an automatic qualification for free food whose effectiveness and sustainability has not been fully examined. Social vulnerability is complicated and not homogenous thus labour constrained households have an untapped potential, state and non-state actors have struggled to understand household food insecurity and social vulnerability in the context of community and household resilience and coping strategies.
