Book excerpt: Letters document the efforts of John Potts, Esquire, of Belize, to recover from the British government the value of certain Indian slaves bequeathed to him and his two sisters, Mrs. Antram and Mrs. Adam by their father's estate. Potts, his brothers-in-law, Joshua Antram and John Adam, and Antram's lawyer, Mr. W. Dean, exchanged letters during 1829-1831 with Henry Cooke of London, agent for the settlement in Honduras and attorney for the claimants of compensation of Indian slaves. The British government had agreed to compensate owners for losses incurred when Colonel George Arthur, superintendent of the settlement from 1814 until his recall in 1822, declared it illegal to hold native Indians as slaves. Also included are letters from Thomas Pickstock, a business associate of Potts' father, and extracts from the account books of Pickstock & Cornish pertaining to an attachment on the Potts estate by Daniel Prince. Documents have been officially notarized by Andrew Bayntun in Belize, September 14, 1831.
