Book excerpt: The investigator examined the academic and attitude effects of cooperative learning instruction on 46 fifth grade at-risk students in mathematics from two different fifth grade classrooms. The experimental group was taught math in the researcher’s classroom with cooperative learning strategies; whereas the control group was taught using whole group instruction with traditional methods. A two sample t test for independent samples was conducted on the posttest results to determine if there were significant differences between the control and experimental groups. There was a significant difference in academic achievement between the experimental group and the control group. Student opinion surveys were used to determine if there was a significant difference in the attitudes of students taught with cooperative learning and those taught by traditional methods. The study indicated that there was no significant difference in attitude.

Book Synopsis Cooperative Learning in the Geometry Classroom by : Sarah A. Byham
Download or read book Cooperative Learning in the Geometry Classroom written by Sarah A. Byham and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This quantitative and qualitative action research project was completed in a suburban high school. The paper describes how the implementation of cooperative learning in the geomentry classroom affected end of the chapter achievement test scores. Other factors were also explored as possible contributors to increased student learning and achievement. Those factors were students' active engagement in their own learning, the teacher's role, and the teacher's attitudes toward the cooperative learning environment. A traditional teaching style was used with the control group and cooperative strategies were implemented with the experimental group. It was found that, within this research design, the implementation of cooperative learning in the geometry classroom did not significantly improve achievement on end of the chapter tests. However, it was also found that the cooperaive experiences were valuable to both the students and the teacher in other ways. Many conclusions about the cooperative learning classroom environment were made by the researcher based on the results of the study. The researcher believed that although there was no significant increase in achievement on test scores, the cooperative environment was more beneficial than the traditional classroom. The activity of the students in the cooperative classroom was more complex and challenging than that of the traditional classroom. Students were also given organized opportunities to help each other to learn. In the end, the researcher found cooperative learning to be a viable teaching strategy for the geometry classroom."--Author's abstract.

The emphasis is on research that has a strong evidence base for the work that is presented and includes empirical studies, best evidence synthesis of the relevant research, case studies, and theoretical reports. It also highlights how different technologies have been used to facilitate group interaction, dialogue, and learning. There is much to be gained by sharing and learning about what happens in different disciplines and contexts and how different collaborative pedagogies can be implemented when needed to promote understanding and learning. This book will have strong appeal to pre-service and experienced teachers and researchers who are interested in how different collaborative pedagogies can be embedded in course curricula to promote student engagement and learning.

Download or read book Cooperative Learning written by Robyn M. Gillies and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2007-03-16 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gilles focuses the majority of the book on the relationship in the classroom between the individual teacher and the students. She gives teachers ammunition to overcome resistance to cooperative learning by presenting well-substantiated research on virtually every page of her book showing the benefits of having students study together." —Ted Wohlfarth, PSYCCRITIQUES "This text′s greatest strengths are bringing together a range of powerful teaching strategies connected to students taking responsibility for their own learning and the learning of others. The focus on both teacher strategies to encourage effective group talk and student strategies to encourage effective discourse is helpful." —Nancy L. Markowitz, San Jose State University Although cooperative learning is widely endorsed as a pedagogical practice that promotes learning and socialization among students, teachers still struggle with how to introduce it into their classrooms. This text highlights the strategies teachers can use to challenge student thinking and scaffold their learning as well as the strategies students can be taught to promote discourse, problem—solving, and learning during cooperative learning. Key Features Presents cooperative learning in conjunction with national standards: The book situates cooperative learning within the context of No Child Left Behind and a climate of high stakes testing. Links theory with practice: Numerous case studies and small group exercises highlight how teachers can assess both the process and outcomes of cooperative learning. Emphasizes the key role teachers play in establishing cooperative learning: Guidelines are given on how teachers can establish cooperative learning in their classrooms to promote student engagement and learning across various levels and for students of diverse abilities. Incorporates the latest research on cooperative learning: An overview is provided of the major research and theoretical perspectives that underpin the development of cooperative learning pedagogy. Intended Audience This is an excellent supplementary text for several undergraduate and graduate level K—12 teacher preparation and certification courses regularly offered in schools of education. It can also be used as one of several texts in courses on cooperative learning and as a supplement in K—12 teaching methods courses.
