Book excerpt: In what may have been the single largest outbreak of vigilante violence in American history, forty suspected Unionists were hanged at Gainesville, Texas, in October 1862. The Great Hanging at Gainesville, 1862, combines two accounts of the events surrounding the executions along with an introduction by noted Civil War historian Richard B. McCaslin and an afterword by L.D. Clark, a descendent of one of the men hanged.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooke County, Texas, located in the north central part of the state, has a richly varied history. Those who first entered the area-Native Americans, gold seekers headed for California, army officials, and settlers-discovered a raw, unspoiled land. Eyewitness accounts speak of "grass that was as high as a man's head," and indeed, the land was rich for farming and ranching. In 1841, W.S. Peters and associates signed their first contract with the Republic of Texas, which provided that within three years they would bring six hundred families into what came to be known as the Peters Colony. In 1848, the state legislature created Cooke County, named for a hero of the Texas War for Independence. Over the next 150 years, the area changed dramatically. The stagecoach arrived in 1858, and conveyed freight, passengers, and mail. The Civil War presented economic and social difficulties that had to be overcome. Two major cattle trails flanked Cooke County, and cowboys roared into Gainesville to visit the saloons, get supplies, gamble, and visit the "soiled doves." The discovery of oil, and the resultant wealth that it brought, forever altered the face of the county.

Book excerpt: The Five Star Plan is a step by step plan for regular people and groups. This book is focused on putting Texas voters back in charge and replacing career politicians with patriots. We provide the tools; you provide the effort. This book will show you where to be active and how to make a positive impact in local and state government. You will learn how to recruit and lead by example, how to make your political group productive, how to communicate conservative principles, uncover elected positions from county to state, how to run for office with a focus and implement ways to hold elected officials accountable. The Five Star Plan is my attempt to answer a question I hear a lot. "What can we do?" People are willing, plenty of people risk their lives to protect and defend our freedoms but we are not taught how to do that. TFSP is a practical plan for regular people who want to unite and preserve liberty in Texas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book leads the reader through the past to the present and here leaves him amid active and progressive men who are advancing, along with him, toward the future. Including, as it does, lives of men now living, it constitutes a connecting link between what has gone before and what is to come after. It is therefore fitting that it should be dedicated to a prominent man of our day in preference to one of former times. The matter presented, in the nature of things, is largely biographical. There can be no foundation for history without biography. History is a generalization of particulars. It presents wide extended views. To use a paradox, history gives us but a part of history. That other part which it does not give us, the part which introduces us to the thoughts, aspirations and daily life of a people, is supplied by biography. The men whose deeds are recorded in this book were or are deeply identified with Texas, and the preservation in this volume in enduring form of some remembrance of them—their names, who and what they were—has been a pleasant task to one who feels a deep interest and pride in Texas—its past history, its heroes and future destiny.

Connor's The Peters Colony of Texas available once again. This classic work of Texas history, long out of print, was praised by John H. Jenkins in Basic Texas Books as "the best study of one of the largest land grants in Texas history." The TSHA first published The Peters Colony of Texas in 1959. The Peters Colony, totaling 16,000 square miles of North Texas, now includes twenty-six counties. Jenkins called it "a masterpiece of weaving together the threads of an extremely difficult historical puzzle with only the meagerest of source materials." For many years the book, with its documentation of early migration to Texas, was available to the public only in noncirculating library collections and an occasional appearance on the rare book market. The TSHA and the Collin County Historical Society are pleased to offer a paperback edition of The Peters Colony of Texas to bring this significant work of Texas history back to public attention.

Book excerpt: Local historian Ron Melugin has roamed this frontier Texas cemetery for over a decade, collecting fascinating stories about the "residents" laid to rest there. Spanning the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, these tales of extraordinary people with ordinary causes of death and ordinary people who died in extraordinary ways illustrate the uncertainties of life on the edge of the Confederacy and next door to Oklahoma Indian Territory. From the former slave who died of old age to the chemistry student who accidentally poisoned his own apple, each account provides a fascinating glimpse into the history of Gainesville. A full map and legend is included to guide readers to each of the sites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic work in Texas military history, The Old Army in Texas is now available in paperback with a new foreword by Robert Wooster. U.S. Army officer and historian Thomas "Ty" Smith presents a comprehensive and authoritative single-source reference for the activities of the regular army in the Lone Star State during the nineteenth century. Beginning with a series of maps that sketch the evolution of fort locations on the frontier, Smith furnishes an overview with his introductory essay. The second part of this guide lists the departmental commanders, the location of the military headquarters, and the changes in the administrative organization and military titles for Texas. Part III provides a dictionary of 223 posts, forts, and camps in the state. The fourth part gives a year by year snapshot of total army strength in the state, the regiments assigned, and the garrisons and commanders of each major fort and camp. Supplying the only such synopsis of its kind, the guide's Part V offers a chronological description of 224 U.S. Army combat actions in the Indian Wars with vivid details of each engagement. The 900 entries in the selected bibliography of Part VI are divided topically into sections on biographical sources and regimental histories, histories of forts, garrison life, civil-military relations, the Mexican War, and frontier operations. The Old Army in Texas is an indispensable reference and research tool for students, scholars, and military history aficionados. It will be of great value to those interested in Texas history, especially military history and local and regional studies. This superb reference work is illustrated with a number of maps and rare photographs of the U.S. Army in nineteenth century Texas.
