Book excerpt: This book provides the foundations for geometric applications of convex cones and presents selected examples from a wide range of topics, including polytope theory, stochastic geometry, and Brunn–Minkowski theory. Giving an introduction to convex cones, it describes their most important geometric functionals, such as conic intrinsic volumes and Grassmann angles, and develops general versions of the relevant formulas, namely the Steiner formula and kinematic formula. In recent years questions related to convex cones have arisen in applied mathematics, involving, for example, properties of random cones and their non-trivial intersections. The prerequisites for this work, such as integral geometric formulas and results on conic intrinsic volumes, were previously scattered throughout the literature, but no coherent presentation was available. The present book closes this gap. It includes several pearls from the theory of convex cones, which should be better known.

This book was released on 2006-05-07 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This systematic and comprehensive account of asymptotic sets and functions develops a broad and useful theory in the areas of optimization and variational inequalities. The central focus is on problems of handling unbounded situations, using solutions of a given problem in these classes, when for example standard compacity hypothesis is not present. This book will interest advanced graduate students, researchers, and practitioners of optimization theory, nonlinear programming, and applied mathematics.

Book Synopsis A Course in Convexity by : Alexander Barvinok
Download or read book A Course in Convexity written by Alexander Barvinok and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2002-11-19 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Convexity is a simple idea that manifests itself in a surprising variety of places. This fertile field has an immensely rich structure and numerous applications. Barvinok demonstrates that simplicity, intuitive appeal, and the universality of applications make teaching (and learning) convexity a gratifying experience. The book will benefit both teacher and student: It is easy to understand, entertaining to the reader, and includes many exercises that vary in degree of difficulty. Overall, the author demonstrates the power of a few simple unifying principles in a variety of pure and applied problems. The prerequisites are minimal amounts of linear algebra, analysis, and elementary topology, plus basic computational skills. Portions of the book could be used by advanced undergraduates. As a whole, it is designed for graduate students interested in mathematical methods, computer science, electrical engineering, and operations research. The book will also be of interest to research mathematicians, who will find some results that are recent, some that are new, and many known results that are discussed from a new perspective.
Book Synopsis Lie Groups, Convex Cones, and Semigroups by : Joachim Hilgert
Download or read book Lie Groups, Convex Cones, and Semigroups written by Joachim Hilgert and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1989 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first and only reference to provide a comprehensive treatment of the Lie theory of subsemigroups of Lie groups. The book is uniquely accessible and requires little specialized knowledge. It includes information on the infinitesimal theory of Lie subsemigroups, and a characterization of those cones in a Lie algebra which are invariant under the action of the group of inner automporphisms. It provides full treatment of the local Lie theory for semigroups, and finally, gives the reader a useful account of the global theory for the existence of subsemigroups with a given set of infinitesimal generators.

Book Synopsis Completely Positive Matrices by : Abraham Berman
Download or read book Completely Positive Matrices written by Abraham Berman and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A real matrix is positive semidefinite if it can be decomposed as A = BBOC . In some applications the matrix B has to be elementwise nonnegative. If such a matrix exists, A is called completely positive. The smallest number of columns of a nonnegative matrix B such that A = BBOC is known as the cp- rank of A . This invaluable book focuses on necessary conditions and sufficient conditions for complete positivity, as well as bounds for the cp- rank. The methods are combinatorial, geometric and algebraic. The required background on nonnegative matrices, cones, graphs and Schur complements is outlined. Contents: Preliminaries: Matrix Theoretic Background; Positive Semidefinite Matrices; Nonnegative Matrices and M -Matrices; Schur Complements; Graphs; Convex Cones; The PSD Completion Problem; Complete Positivity: Definition and Basic Properties; Cones of Completely Positive Matrices; Small Matrices; Complete Positivity and the Comparison Matrix; Completely Positive Graphs; Completely Positive Matrices Whose Graphs are Not Completely Positive; Square Factorizations; Functions of Completely Positive Matrices; The CP Completion Problem; CP Rank: Definition and Basic Results; Completely Positive Matrices of a Given Rank; Completely Positive Matrices of a Given Order; When is the CP-Rank Equal to the Rank?. Readership: Upper level undergraduates, graduate students, academics and researchers interested in matrix theory."

Book Synopsis Optimization by : Lucien W. Neustadt
Download or read book Optimization written by Lucien W. Neustadt and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive treatment of necessary conditions for general optimization problems. The presentation is carried out in the context of a general theory for extremal problems in a topological vector space setting. Following a brief summary of the required background, generalized Lagrange multiplier rules are derived for optimization problems with equality and generalized "inequality" constraints. The treatment stresses the importance of the choice of the underlying set over which the optimization is to be performed, the delicate balance between differentiability-continuity requirements on the constraint functionals, and the manner in which the underlying set is approximated by a convex set. The generalized multiplier rules are used to derive abstract maximum principles for classes of optimization problems defined in terms of operator equations in a Banach space. It is shown that special cases include the usual maximum principles for general optimal control problems described in terms of diverse systems such as ordinary differential equations, functional differential equations, Volterra integral equations, and difference equations. Careful distinction is made throughout the analysis between "local" and "global" maximum principles. Originally published in 1977.
