Book Synopsis Religious Feminism and the Future of the Planet by : Rita M. Gross
Download or read book Religious Feminism and the Future of the Planet written by Rita M. Gross and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2001-04-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "At its heart," Frederick Buechner once wrote, "most theology, like most fiction, is essentially autobiography." That is true of this book in a very explicit way. Rita Gross and Rosemary Radford Ruether have long been known for their feminist contributions to Buddhism and Christianity, respectively. In this book, they talk candidly about what their respective traditions mean to them in both their liberating as well as problematic aspects. Throughout the book, their lifestories provide the rich soil, perhaps even the rationale, for their theological and spiritual development. Born in a nonvirtual log cabin to a struggling Christian fundamentalist farm family, Rita was excommunicated by her church at an early age. She eventually made a long journey to Buddhism after a detour through Judaism. Rosemary was born in comfortable circumstance and raised an "enlightened" Roman Catholic in a family that had Jewish and Protestant connections. She would always rather fight (for enlightened Catholicism) than switch. Despite the marked differences in their life histories and their respective religious faiths, Rita and Rosemary achieve surprising unanimity on the paramount issue: what engaged Buddhism and what enlightened Christianity can offer in the struggle to create a new future for planet earth.
Download or read book Jesus Feminist written by Sarah Bessey and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written with poetic rhythm, a prophetic voice, and a deeply biblical foundation, this loving yet fearless book urges today’s church to move beyond man-made restrictions and fully welcome women’s diverse voices and experiences. A freedom song for the church. Sarah Bessey didn’t ask for Jesus to come in and mess up all her ideas about a woman’s place in the world and in the church. But patriarchy, she came to learn, was not God’s dream for humanity. Bessey engages critically with Scripture in this gentle and provocative love letter to the Church. Written with poetic rhythm, a prophetic voice, and a deeply biblical foundation, this loving yet fearless book urges today’s church to move beyond man-made restrictions and fully welcome women’s diverse voices and experiences. It’s at once a call to find freedom in the fullness, hope, glory, and work of Christ, and a very personal and moving story of how Jesus made a feminist out of her.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeking to uncover the places where feminism and Christianity, taken as deep spiritual paths, converge, the author shows that theism adds a dimension to life that the feminist movement needs. Conversely, she points out that Christianity can benefit from some of the messages that feminists are projecting. She focuses on the dimensions of divinity (theology), self (psychology), society (sociology) and nature (ecology). Her balanced perspective should appeal to both feminists and Christians of both sexes. Originally published in 1982 by Abingdon Press.

Book excerpt: The growing body of feminist literature in the late 20th and early 21st centuries demonstrates the phenomenal advances of feminist thought and movements in the context of church and society. Characteristic of this growth is the re-location of issues from the global North, and broadening of focus to include voices from the global South. In the context of globalization new vistas and voices are emerging that trace new directions and seek to rephrase the central questions in the feminist discourse. This volume aims to highlight the changing face and color of feminist theological discourse, recognize innovative research in the field, and facilitate a global conversation among feminists engaged in theological ethics in the world church.

The subtitle Ecumenical Essays indicates that these words, these tongues, belong to women of faith around the world--women who speak in diverse settings and situations. Where dissonance and harmony intersect among writers, there readers confront choices, which, in turn, become their own testimonies." --from Chapter 1

Download or read book Facing Challenges written by Allyson Jule and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-13 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of ten essays, all focused on the realities of conducting feminist work within Christian universities and colleges, as well as churches. The purpose of this collection emerges from the contributors’ lives at the intersection of feminist ideas and the Christian contexts in which they work. The book’s focus is on the ways in which feminism continues to meet resistance from Christian institutions and communities. Within these contexts, the authors describe the ongoing challenges they face as feminists with their students, their colleagues, their pastors, their fellow congregants, their peers, and their own families. Scholars, clergy, students, and readers interested in understanding feminism more deeply, and interested in the intersection of religion, feminism, and scholarly life will find this collection invaluable. Readers will find insights into the everyday feminist work of academics, the development of more inclusive student-life climates, feminist learning in college classrooms, and the obstacles to creating more inclusive Christian churches. These essays are honest, heartfelt, and helpful in envisioning more liberating paradigms and practices for feminist Christians who continue to negotiate current realities in integrating feminism with faith in many contexts.
Book Synopsis Into the Deep by : Abigail Rine Favale
Download or read book Into the Deep written by Abigail Rine Favale and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Into the Deep traces one woman's spiritual odyssey from birthright evangelicalism through postmodern feminism and, ultimately, into the Roman Catholic Church. As a college student, Abigail Favale experienced a feminist awakening that reshaped her life and faith. A decade later, on the verge of atheism, she found herself entering the oldest male-helmed institution on the planet--the last place she expected to be. With humor and insight, the author describes her gradual exodus from Christian orthodoxy and surprising swerve into Catholicism. She writes candidly about grappling with wounds from her past, Catholic sexual morality, the male priesthood, and an interfaith marriage. Her vivid prose brings to life the wrenching tumult of conversion--a conversion that began after she entered the Church and began to pry open its mysteries. There, she discovered the startling beauty of a sacramental cosmos, a vision of reality that upended her notions of gender, sexuality, identity, and authority. Into the Deep is a thoroughly twenty-first-century conversion, a compelling account of recovering an ancient faith after a decade of doubt.
Book Synopsis What's Right with the Trinity? by : Hannah Bacon
Download or read book What's Right with the Trinity? written by Hannah Bacon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-11 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctrine of the Trinity poses a series of problems for feminist theology. At a basic level, the androcentric nature of trinitarian language serves to promote the male as more fully in the image of God and as the archetype of humanity, pushing women to the margins of personhood. It is no surprise then that feminist scholarship on this doctrine has often focused on what's wrong with the Trinity, setting out the problems raised by the use of traditional androcentric trinitarian language. This book brings together a discussion of feminist theological methodology with a critical exploration of the doctrine of the Trinity. Focussing on what's right with the Trinity as opposed to what's wrong with the Trinity, it considers the usefulness of this doctrine for feminist theology today. It replaces a stress on trinitarian language with an emphasis on trinitarian thought, exploring how we might effectively think rather than speak God in light of feminist concerns. In particular, it asks how a trinitarian understanding of God might support, and be supported by, key values which underpin a feminist way of doing theology, specifically values which underpin the methodological use of women's experience in feminist theology. The central argument is that thinking God as Trinity need not serve to reinforce patriarchal values and ideals but may in fact promote the subjectivity and personhood of women.

Book Synopsis Sexism and Sin-Talk by : Rachel Sophia Baard
Download or read book Sexism and Sin-Talk written by Rachel Sophia Baard and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early feminist theologians criticized the Christian doctrine of sin for its focus on female sexual purity and its enabling of the marginalization and oppression of women. Others have questioned whether the entire theological category of sin should be abandoned in favor of other ways of talking about the human predicament. In this new book, Rachel Baard argues for a feminist critique of traditional sin-talk alongside a constructive reinterpretation of the doctrine of sinone that can be life affirming for all persons. She claims that the Christian idea of sinthat tragic flaw at the core of human experienceprovides one of the best tools for understanding the evils of sexism, patriarchy, and traditional sin-talk itself. She likewise provides a new rhetoric of sin-talk, one that accounts for the diverse experiences of the human family, not simply those of powerful men.
