Book excerpt: Excerpt from Convent Life: Or the Duties of Sisters Dedicated in Religion to the Service of God; Intended Chiefly for Superiors and Confessors What I have proposed to myself, in writing this work, has been to explain, from a doctrinal point of view, the duties and obligations of the Religious Life in all its bearings and principles. Religious, like Seculars, desire to have solid and definite teaching in regard to their obligations, so that their souls may be properly sustained in acquiring evangelical perfection. And, it seems to me, that there is room for a work of this kind, a work that will explain briefly and clearly the obligations of the Religious State and that will offer a succint analysis of doctrinal teaching on the various important matters in connection with that state. We have in Latin, in French, in Italian and Spanish, many well digested works which explain these duties very fully and with great accuracy, but we have few works of the kind in English. We have, it is true, plenty of spiritual and ascetical works suitable for Religious, but none which define for us the exact law of the Gospel according to the maxim: hoc oportet facere et illud non omttere. In trying to supply this want, I have had to read many works of Theology and Canon Law treating on this subject and to condense the opinions of others wiser than myself. The old Canon Law arranged most of the duties of Religious and defined their scope. In more recent times, many improvements and changes in the Church's discipline relative to Conventual life have been found necessary, and on this account, in reconciling the old with the new state of things, many difficulties present themselves to those who have to deal conscientiously with these matters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English Roman Catholic women’s congregations are an enigma of nineteenth-century social history. Over ten thousand nuns and sisters, establishing and managing significant Catholic educational, health care and social welfare institutions in England and Wales, have virtually disappeared from history. Despite their exclusion from historical texts, these women featured prominently in the public and private sphere. Intertwining the complexities of class with the notion of ethnicity, Contested identities examines the relationship between English and Irish-born sisters. This study is relevant not only to understanding women religious and Catholicism in nineteenth-century England and Wales, but also to our understanding of the role of women in the public and private sphere, dealing with issues still resonant today. Contributing to the larger story of the agency of nineteenth-century women and the broader transformation of English society, this book will appeal to scholars and students of social, cultural, gender and religious history.

Persecuted by Anthony Comstock and his Society for the Suppression of Vice, this turn-of-the-century heroine was also a spiritualist who learned many secrets of high magick through her claimed wedlock to an angelic being. Born in Philadelphia in 1857, Ida Craddock became involved in occultism around the age of thirty. She attended classes at the Theosophical Society and began studying a tremendous amount of materials on various occult subjects. She taught correspondence courses to women and newly married couples to educate them on the sacred nature of sex, maintaining that her explicit knowledge came from her nightly experiences with an angel named Soph. In 1902, she was arrested under New York’s anti-obscenity laws and committed suicide to avoid life in an asylum. Now for the first time, scholar Vere Chappell has compiled the most extensive collection of Craddock’s work including original essays, diary excerpts, and suicide letters--one to her mother and one to the public.

Book excerpt: It has been my high privilege to have some practical experience as the earthly wife of an angel from the unseen world. In the interests of psychical research, I have tried to explore this pathway of communication with the spiritual universe, and, so far as lay in my power, to make a sort of rough guidebook of the route. For not all wives of heavenly bridegrooms travel the same path at first. There are roads running into this one from every religion and folklore under the sun, since the pathway of marital relations on the Borderland was once, and still is, as I hope to show, one of the main thoroughfares connecting our world with the world beyond the grave.
