Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author gives a diligent and careful investigation into the history and teachings of the Christian faith and church as they relate to poignant and timely contemporary controversies and issues facing modern-day Christianity. From questions about the role and place of women in the church and of the church itself, to issues related to homosexuality and the nature of the spirit world, the author provides a detailed and well-refined study that should pique the curiosity of believers and help guide them towards God's true answers to these complex theological and doctrinal questions. Inasmuch as Christ, Peter, Paul, and the prophets taught in the simplicity in the Word, some topics they taught were hard to understand or controversial to the traditional reader. The purpose of this book is to shed light upon a few of those controversial subjects in hope of expounding unto the reader the way of God more perfectly.

Book excerpt: For challenge and encouragement in your Christian life, read the life stories of the Heroes of the Faith. The novelized biographies of this series are inspiring and easy-to-read, ideal for Christians of any age or background. In Charles Spurgeon, you’ll get to know the English Baptist who became known as “the Prince of Preachers”—a man who led a 6,000-seat “megachurch” decades before the term was coined, and whose sermons and writings are still readable a hundred years after his death. Appropriate for readers from junior high through adult, helpful for believers of any background, these biographies encourage greater Christian commitment through the example of heroes like Charles Spurgeon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicholas Kalashnikoff is a Siberian living in this country, a citizen since 1930. They That Take the Sword, his first novel, is based upon intimate first-hand knowledge and follows in part his own experiences. Like his hero, Sergei Kuskov, he enlisted in the revolutionary movement when little more than a boy and participated in the 1905 rebellion. For this he was later exiled by the czarist government to the Arctic. With the outbreak of the World War he volunteered for service with the Russian Army and rose to the rank of captain. In the civil war that followed he played a role of considerable prominence. He commanded the People's Army of Siberia which in 1919 defeated the combined forces of Admiral Kolchak and the notorious Ataman Semenoff at Irkutsk. Finally, when the Bolshevik victory destroyed the hope of the moderate, democratic faction with which he was allied, he was forced to flee the country. During his residence in the United States he has worked variously as a grocery clerk, a presser of women's coats, an insurance agent, and an assorter and salesman of furs. His articles of political and literary comment have appeared in numerous Russian periodicals.

Book excerpt: NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Kirkus Reviews • Fantasy Book Critic “Pulpy and hard-core, but with a heart of gold.”—io9 The otherworldly Kiriath once used their advanced technology to save the world from the dark magic of the Aldrain, only to depart as mysteriously as they arrived. Now one of the Kiriath’s uncanny machines has fallen from orbit, with a message that humanity once more faces a grave danger: the Ilwrack Changeling, a boy raised to manhood in the ghostly realm of the Gray Places. Wrapped in sorcerous slumber on an island that drifts between this world and the Gray Places, the Ilwrack Changeling is stirring. When he wakes, the Aldrain will rally to him and return in force. But with the Kiriath long gone, humankind’s fate now depends on warrior Ringil Eskiath and his few, trusted allies. Undertaking a perilous journey to strike first against the Ilwrack Changeling, each of them seeks to outrun a haunted past and find redemption in the future. But redemption won’t come cheap. Nor, for that matter, will survival.

Roop draws attention to the distinctive narrative characteristics of these magnificent dramas. As we enter the world of these struggles and events, we will experience in the stories sorrow and laughter, hope and loyalty, and God’s mercy and grace.

Robin McKinley returns to the mythical setting of The Hero and the Crown and The Blue Sword in this “thrilling, satisfying, and thought-provoking collection” featuring two stories set in the world of Damar, plus three other fantasy tales featuring adventurous, pragmatic, and heroic young women (Publishers Weekly). There’s mute Lily, in “The Healer,” who has the power to help others, and receives a startling opportunity to find her voice when a mysterious mage stumbles into town. And Queen Ruen, who is at the mercy of a power-hungry uncle until she encounters a shape-changer in “The Stagman.” In “Touk’s House,” a maiden who has grown up with a witch and a troll has a chance to become a princess, but she must decide whether she would really live happily ever after. When a curse follows Coral to her new husband’s farm in “Buttercups,” the pair has a choice: Succumb to defeat or find a way to turn a disastrous enchantment into a fruitful new venture. Finally, travel to upstate New York with Annabelle. In the title story, her family moves shortly after her sixteenth birthday, and just as she starts to adjust to her new life in a small town, a plan to build a superhighway threatens her new home. But a strange box hidden in a secret attic in the new house may be the answer. This is a delightful assortment of tales from an author with “a remarkable talent for melding the real and the magical into a single, believable whole” (Booklist).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A welcome new account of Stuart’s fateful ride during the 1863 Pennsylvania campaign . . . well researched, vividly written, and shrewdly argued.” —Mark Grimsley, author of And Keep Moving On June 1863. The Gettysburg Campaign is in its opening hours. Harness jingles and hoofs pound as Confederate cavalryman James Ewell Brown (JEB) Stuart leads his three brigades of veteran troopers on a ride that triggers one of the Civil War’s most bitter and enduring controversies. Instead of finding glory and victory-two objectives with which he was intimately familiar, Stuart reaped stinging criticism and substantial blame for one of the Confederacy’s most stunning and unexpected battlefield defeats. In Plenty of Blame to Go Around: Jeb Stuart’s Controversial Ride to Gettysburg, Eric J. Wittenberg and J. David Petruzzi objectively investigate the role Stuart’s horsemen played in the disastrous campaign. It is the first book ever written on this important and endlessly fascinating subject. Did the plumed cavalier disobey General Robert E. Lee’s orders by stripping the army of its “eyes and ears?” Was Stuart to blame for the unexpected combat that broke out at Gettysburg on July 1? Authors Wittenberg and Petruzzi, widely recognized for their study and expertise of Civil War cavalry operations, have drawn upon a massive array of primary sources, many heretofore untapped, to fully explore Stuart’s ride, its consequences, and the intense debate among participants shortly after the battle, through early post-war commentators, and among modern scholars. The result is a richly detailed study jammed with incisive tactical commentary, new perspectives on the strategic role of the Southern cavalry, and fresh insights on every horse engagement, large and small, fought during the campaign.
