Book Synopsis Catch crops and sugar beet variety types at Heterodera schachtii infested fields – nematode-host interactions and options for nematode control by : Melanie Hauer
Download or read book Catch crops and sugar beet variety types at Heterodera schachtii infested fields – nematode-host interactions and options for nematode control written by Melanie Hauer and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2015-11-24 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed investigation of sugar beets differing in tolerance and resistance properties at fields with varying Heterodera schachtii infestation in Northern Germany was conducted. The effect of nematode infestation on water consumption, nitrogen uptake, yield and water use efficiency (WUE) of susceptible, tolerant and resistant sugar beet varieties was studied. Varietal differences in WUE were primarily associated with differences in yield. Yield of all varieties decreased with increasing nematode population while the susceptible variety showed the steepest decline. Nitrogen status of all varieties was reduced at very high nematode infestation. Further objectives were to investigate the effects of catch crop cultivation (nematode resistant mustard (Sinapis alba L.), catch crop mixture, straw mulch as control), nematicide application and the cultivation of sugar beet varieties on population dynamics of H. schachtii and sugar yield. Establishment of a sufficient catch crop stand was difficult under Northern German cropping practices. Thus, a significant nematode reduction by cultivation of mustard compared to straw mulch was not achieved. In this study, the resistant sugar beet variety showed the best nematode control while maintaining a high sugar yield. Catch crops and nematicide application had no effect on population dynamics of H. schachtii.

Book Synopsis Integrated Management and Biocontrol of Vegetable and Grain Crops Nematodes by : A. Ciancio
Download or read book Integrated Management and Biocontrol of Vegetable and Grain Crops Nematodes written by A. Ciancio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-08 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume of the IMPD series describes aspects related to the most important phytoparasitic nematodes, considering the integration of biological control methods with other management practices and technologies, including the use of predatory nematodes and microbial rhizosphere antagonists. A focus is given on regional issues. A review on nematode management in cotton is integrated by a chapter on management of nematodes on wheat. New technologies are also revised.
Download or read book Cyst Nematodes written by F. Lamberti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cyst nematodes are a major group of plant pathogens of economic importance in many countries throughout the world. Considerable yield losses have been attributed to cyst nematodes attacking potatoes, sugar beet, soybean and cereals. Because of the protective cyst that is formed, which encloses the eggs, they pose special problems in their control and also in preventing their distribution in soil from infested areas. There has been much research on many aspects of the biology of cyst nematodes and the large number of publications are testimony to their importance as crop pests and of the interest of nematologists in the group. Nevertheless, they continue to pose problems because of the complexity of their phylogeny and taxonomy and there is still much to be investigated on their biology, particularly with those aspects which relate to improving the effectiveness of control. In many respects the biology of the various cyst nematode species is similar, although with variations due to different interactions with hosts and geographical location. Thus, research on any one species has general applicability and this is particularly so with regard to evaluation of control measures, or to the methodology of soil sampling for the assessment of populations prior to growing crops.

Download or read book Sugar Beet Cultivation, Management and Processing written by Varucha Misra and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-21 with total page 1024 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of advancements and achievements in the field of sugar beet cultivation. It covers recent research and up-to-date information on this crop. It discusses essential aspects for high production and good yield, development and crop management, such as origin, breeding, seed production, physiology, pathology, entomology, biotechnology, and post-harvest technology. Sugar beet is known as an alternative crop for sugar production. A versatile crop having numerous uses, besides being raw material for sugar production, its molasses contain high amount of betaine which is used as a feed supplement. Due to its value profile it has attracted the millers and farmers alike. This book is of interest to teachers, researchers, agriculture scientists, capacity builders and policymakers. Also the book serves as additional reading material for graduate students of agriculture, forestry, ecology and soil science. National and international agricultural scientists, policy makers will also find this to be a useful read.
