Book Synopsis Management and Ecology of Freshwater Plants by : Joseph Caffrey
Download or read book Management and Ecology of Freshwater Plants written by Joseph Caffrey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing need for appropriate management of aquatic plants in rivers and canals, lakes and reservoirs, and drainage channels and urban waterways. This management must be based on a sound knowledge of the ecology of freshwater plants, their distribution and the different forms of control available including chemical, physical, biological and biomanipulation. This series of papers from over 20 different countries was generated from the highly successful European Weed Research Society symposia on aquatic plant management, this being the ninth. The contributions provide a valuable insight into the complexities involved in managing aquatic systems, discuss state-of-the-art control techniques such as biomanipulation using fish and waterfowl and the use of straw, and deal with patterns of regrowth and recovery post-management. Careful consideration is given to the use of chemicals, a practice which has come under scrutiny in recent years. Underpinning the development of such control techniques is a growing body of knowledge relating to the biology and ecology of water plants, including growth responses under different trophic conditions, the impact of pollution, and aspects of photosynthesis. The authorship of the papers represents the collective wisdom of leading scientists and experts from fisheries agencies, river authorities, nature conservation agencies, the agrochemical industry and both governmental and non-governmental organisations.

Book excerpt: This new book, published for the European Weed Research Society, provides a detailed overview of the management of aquatic weeds, which cause serious problems in bodies of water throughout the world. This state-of-the-art review includes worldwide coverage of these undesirable organisms. It provides readers with information on the ecology and management of aquatic weeds, as well as in-depth discussion of environmental consequences of weed control methods. Valuable appendix materials give useful listings of the weeds, biological control agents used against aquatic weeds, and herbicides used in fresh waters.

Book excerpt: Biology and Control of Aquatic Plants: A Best Management Practices Handbook is the fourth edition of a handbook produced by the not for profit Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration Foundation (AERF). The mission of the AERF is to support research and development which provides strategies and techniques for the environmentally and scientifically sound management, conservation and restoration of aquatic ecosystems. One way the Foundation accomplishes this mission is by producing this handbook to provide information to the public regarding the benefits of aquatic ecosystem conservation and aquatic plant management. The first, second and third editions of this handbook became some of the most widely consulted references in the aquatic plant management community. This fourth edition has been specifically designed with water resource managers, water management associations, homeowners and customers and operators of aquatic plant management companies and districts in mind. Our goal in preparing this handbook is to provide basic, scientifically sound information to assist decision-makers with their water management questions.
Book Synopsis Weed Control Methods for River Basin Management by : E.O. Gangstad
Download or read book Weed Control Methods for River Basin Management written by E.O. Gangstad and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquatic plants continue to create problems associated with navigation, flood control, agriculture, irrigation and drainage, values of lands, conservation of wildlife and fisheries, and water resource supply. While much research is being done to find more effective and economic control measures, there is now a great need to apply known facts to achieve a measure of control by the means available. It is the purpose of this volume to provide a scientifically documented treatise of the known facts as they apply to the control of aquatic weeds in river basins and their allied waterways with particular emphasis on alligator weed and water hyacinth.
