Book excerpt: Helicopters operate in an environment where task performance can easily be affected by atmospheric turbulence. This paper discusses the airborne flight test of the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter in turbulent conditions to determine disturbance rejection criteria and to develop a low speed turbulence model for helicopter simulation. A simple approach to modeling the aircraft response to turbulence is described by using an identified model of the Black Hawk to extract representative control inputs that replicate the aircraft response to disturbances. This parametric turbulence model is designed to be scaled for varying levels of turbulence and utilized in ground or in-flight simulation. Flight control cutoff frequency data are also analyzed to support design criteria for gust rejection handling qualities.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2007 in the subject Computer Science - Applied, grade: keine, University of Applied Sciences Bremen, language: English, abstract: Under the terms of the US/German MoU (Helicopter Aeromechanics) the Task IX - Modeling and Simulation for Rotorcraft Systems - is defined: ”The overall objective of this task is to improve the modeling accuracy and understanding of helicopter dynamics and control. Improved modeling and understanding of the important issues can be used to increase the fidelity of ground-based simulations, thus allowing early pilot evaluation during the development of new control systems, compatibility checks for improved safety, decreases in experimental flight testing, and hence a reduction in costs and risks.” One of the recent subtasks under Task IX has been a disturbance rejection study [1], resulting in a UH-60 Black Hawk control equivalent turbulence simulation model [2]. Figure 1: Turbulence model extraction As illustrated in Figure 1 the basic idea is to have a pilot loosely stabilize a helicopter in a turbulent (input T ) environment (e. g. hovering on the leeward side of a high building), and measure the pilot control inputs (P ) and the reaction (rates, velocities, . . . ) of the helicopter (x). In the off-line extraction phase the measured reaction x (which includes the reaction of the helicopter to both the turbulence and the pilot input) is fed into an inverse model of the helicopter, resulting in the corresponding control input P+T that would be necessary to produce the measured reaction. Again, P+T includes turbulence and pilot input. If the measured pilot input P is subtracted, an equivalent turbulence input Teq remains. This equivalent turbulence input can then directly be used as an additional control input in any kind of simulator; without the need to gain and implement more complex turbulence models. During the actual model extraction approach [1] it became clear that ”Ideally, an exact numerical inverse of the coupled MIMO model would be used.” This paper will therefore present and discuss different approaches to invert dynamical systems.

Book excerpt: A method for developing and performing a rotorcraft flight simulation in the airwake behind a bluff body is investigated and compared to flight test data. This method is broadly composed of two parts: an atmospheric boundary layer computational simulation that is unsteady and time-accurate, and a UH-60 flight dynamics program that can be coupled with an airwake developed from the atmospheric boundary layer simulation. The airwake simulations are performed using the open source CFD software OpenFOAM with a solver package originally developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The flight dynamics program is an implementation of the GENHEL model known as PSUHeloSim. The computational fluid dynamics airwake solution is developed to recreate the airwake present for the validation case flight tests that were used to collect the flight test data. The validation case flight test data was collected from a variety of station-keeping tasks performed in the wake of a hangar on land. For the current investigation, two kinds of flight simulations were performed: piloted simulations in a flight simulator facility and flight simulations performed using a pilot model. Comparisons between flight test data and simulated flight data were made based on power spectral density analyses of both pilot control activity and aircraft motion. Comparisons of pilot control stick activity reveal that pilots in the simulated flight tests used higher control activity energy than the flight test validation case pilots. An analysis of the vehicle angular rates yielded similar results, with the overall trends of power versus frequency being similar but a significantly higher power being seen for the piloted flight simulations. Limited data did show sizeable differences in pilot control activity for the same simulated flight task flown by different pilots in the flight simulation facility. Pilot variability, combined with other obfuscating effects such as inherently higher pilot control energy in a simulated environment than in physical rotorcraft, make an exact reproduction of the validation case flight test data infeasible for this investigation. That being said, a number of unknowns and methodological improvements were identified and discussed. The pilot model was not used to compare simulated flights to validation case flights, but was useful for analyzing sensitivity of flight simulations to positioning error within a simulated airwake as well as for comparing flight simulations in different airwakes to each other without the variability associated with human pilots. It was found that flight simulations in airwakes generated with an atmospheric boundary layer flow required higher pilot control activity than flight simulations in airwakes generated by a simple uniform inflow.

Book excerpt: A new rotor dynamic wake distortion model, which can be used to account for the rotor transient wake distortion effect on inflow across the rotor disk during helicopter maneuvering and transitional flight in both hover and forward flight conditions, is developed. The dynamic growths of the induced inflow perturbation across the rotor disk during different transient maneuvers, such as a step pitch or roll rate, a step climb rate and a step change of advance ratio are investigated by using a dynamic vortex tube analysis. Based on the vortex tube results, a rotor dynamic wake distortion model, which is expressed in terms of a set of ordinary differential equations, with rotor longitudinal and lateral wake curvatures, wake skew and wake spacing as states, is developed. Also, both the Pitt-Peters dynamic inflow model and the Peters-He finite state inflow model for axial or forward flight are augmented to account for rotor dynamic wake distortion effect during helicopter maneuvering flight. To model the aerodynamic interaction among main rotor, tail rotor and empennage caused by rotor wake curvature effect during helicopter maneuvering flight, a reduced order model based on a vortex tube analysis is developed. Both the augmented Pitt-Peters dynamic inflow model and the augmented Peters-He finite state inflow model, combined with the developed dynamic wake distortion model, together with the interaction model are implemented in a generic helicopter simulation program of UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter and the simulated vehicle control responses in both time domain and frequency domain are compared with flight test data of a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter in both hover and low speed forward flight conditions.

Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the application of multivariable design techniques developed by Professor Brian Porter of the University of Salford, England to design digital control laws for the UH-60A Black Hawk helicopter. In the study, designs were developed for five longitudinally and laterally, strongly coupled plants with control inputs of cyclic roll control, cyclic pitch control, collective lift control, and tail rotor yaw control. An improved computer-aided design packaged called 'MULTI' was used in refining the control laws. Separate controllers were developed to perform three flight maneuvers. The maneuvers performed were a coordinated turn, a yaw rate response, and a vertical rate response. Since each maneuver is flown at a different airspeed, a uniquely specified linearized plant model was required. The methods employed to obtain a design are presented along with the evaluations of the final control laws. After successful designs of the individual control laws for the three maneuvers were developed, tests were performed to find a single controller to perform each maneuver for its applicable flight conditions. Finally, the evaluation of the robustness of the single controllers is presented. (Author).

Book excerpt: Helicopter/slung load systems are two body systems in which the slung load adds its rigid body dynamics, aerodynamics, and sling stretching dynamics to the helicopter. The slung load can degrade helicopter handling qualities and reduce the flight envelope of the helicopter. Confirmation of system stability parameters and envelope is desired, but flight test evaluation is time consuming and costly. A simulation model validated for handling quality assessments would significantly reduce resources expended in flight testing while increasing efficiency, productivity, and safety by aiding researchers, designers, and pilots to understand factors affecting helicopter-slung load handling qualities. This thesis describes a comprehensive dynamics and aerodynamics model for slung load simulation, obtained by integrating the NASA Ames Gen Hel UH-60A simulation with slung load equations of motion. Frequency domain analysis is used to compare simulation to flight test frequency responses and key system stability parameters. Results are given for no load, a 4K lb Block, and a 4K lb CONEX load. Handling quality parameters, stability margins, and load pendulum motion roots for cases without load aerodynamics and with static wind tunnel data were compared. Results illustrated state-of-the-art simulation modeling of helicopter/slung load dynamics and its accuracy in predicting key dynamic parameters of interest.

Book excerpt: Helicopter design at the Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation is aided by the use of the Sikorsky General Helicopter (GenHel(registered)) Flight Dynamics Simulation Model. Specifically, GenHel output is used by both handling qualities and maneuver loads engineers as a predictive design tool. Inherent in the use of an analytical model is the requirement for validation. This report seeks to validate the GenHel(registered) flight dynamics simulation models used in the design of the UH-60L Wide Chord Blade (WCB) modification. initially comparisons are made between the current analytical models and flight test data for selected trim flight conditions and dynamic maneuvers. Based on the correlation of the data, modifications are made to the analytical model where necessary. The modified analytical model will be validated through a final comparison with test flight data. The goal of this report is to validate the use of Sikorsky's GenHel(registered) flight simulation program as an analytic predictive tool in the design of the WCB modification and identify any areas where improvements could be applied. Validation of the WCB GenHel model serves two purposes. First it confirms the ability of GenHel to model the flight dynamic response of the UH-60L with the WCB modification. Second it confirms the predictive loads forwarded to the structural engineers during the design phase of the WCB.
