Accuracy and the dynamic responses are better in a closed loop system. In the closed loop system, acceleration and the deceleration of the motor can be controlled according to the requirement. In order to regulate drives automatically, the controlled variables are measured. A tachogenerator is used for this purpose. The output of the tachogenerators is compared with a preset reference voltage. The differences between these two signals are fed as an actuating signal to control the elements of the system. Control amplifiers are used as both comparators and amplifiers. As a small change in the voltage can cause a large change in the motor current and lead to a particular drive control feature. There are two closed paths in the dc control scheme. One is the outer speed control loop and the other is the inner current control loop. Both the loops are controlled with the help of P-I controllers having their own gains and the time constants according to the requirement of the system. The output of the speed P-I controller which is the function of the speed error is used to command for current P-I controller and compared with armature current. The current P-I controller output control the triggering circuit of the converter. The armature current tends to increase to a large value when the motor is accelerating. A current limit can be obtained in this system by limiting the maximum current command voltage. If the motor speed drops below the set point, the resulting error signal causes the gate pulse generator to advance the firing pulses, and increase the rectifier output voltage. Consequently the speed rises to the desired level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of technologies affects the demands of industries at the present time. Thus, automatic control has played a vital role in the advance of engineering and science. In today's industries, control of DC motors is a common practice. Therefore, implementation of DC motor controller is required. There are many types of controller that can be used to implement the elegant and effective output. One of them is by using a PI controller. PI stands for Proportional and Integral Controllers which are designed to eliminate the need for continuous operator attention thus provide automatic control to the system. Cruise control in a car and a house thermostat are common examples of how controllers are used to automatically adjust some variable to hold the measurement (or process variable) at the set-point. This project is focusing on implementing PI controller to control speed of a dc motor. The overall project is divided into two parts. The first part is concern on the simulation using MATLAB simulink where the dc motor is modeled and PI controller is tuned using Ziegler-Nichols rules and software tuning. The second part is implementing the simulation. This part is divided into another two parts, Graphical User Interface (GUI) development and hardware interfacing. GUI is built using National Instrument LabVIEW software with implementation of PI controller. An oscilloscope also had been build there. Hardware interfacing part is built with Mitsumi dc mini-motors, M31E-1 Series, speed sensor and analog to digital converter, DAC8032. As the result, PI controller is capable to control the speed of dc motor followed the result from simulation.

The speed of DC motor is controlled using Neural Network Based Model Reference and Predictive controllers with the use of Matlab/Simulink. The analysis of the DC motor is done with and without input side Torque disturbance input and the simulation results obtained by comparing the desired and actual speed of the DC motor using random reference and sinusoidal speed inputs for the DC motor with Model Reference and Predictive controllers. The DC motor with Model Reference controller shows almost the actual speed is the same as the desired speed with a good performance than the DC motor with Predictive controller for the system with and without input side disturbance. Finally the comparative simulation result prove the effectiveness of the DC motor with Model Reference controller.

Book excerpt: The ultimate goal of this paper is to control the angular speed, in a model of a DC motor driving an inertial load has the angular speed, as the output and applied voltage, as the input, by varying the applied voltage using different control strategies for comparison purpose. The comparison is made between the proportional controller, integral controller, proportional and integral controller, phase lag compensator, derivative controller, lead integral compensator, lead lag compensator, PID controller and the linear quadratic tracker design based on the optimal control theory. It has been realized that the design based on the linear quadratic tracker will give the best steady state and transient system behavior, mainly because, the other compensator designs are mostly based on trial and error while the linear quadratic tracker design is based on the optimal control theory which can give best dynamic performance for the controlled system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The automatic control has played a vital role in the advance of engineering and science. Nowadays in industries, the control of direct current (DC) motor is a common practice thus the implementation of DC motor of controller speed is important. The main purpose of motor speed control is to keep the rotation of the motor at the present speed and to drive a system at the demand speed. The DC Series Wound Motor is very popular in industrial application and control systems because of the high torque density, high efficiency and small size. The main purpose of this project is to control speed of DC Series Wound Motor using four controllers which are PID, PI, P, and Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC). Initially all the controllers are developed by using MATLAB simulink model. In this project, PID, PI, and P controller are developed and tuned in order to get faster step response and the Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) is design based on the membership function and the rule base. The expectation of this project is the Fuzzy Logic Controller will get the best performance compared to other controllers in terms of settling time (Ts), rise time (Tr), peak time (Tp), and percent overshoot (%OS). Finally a GUI of these controllers are developed which allow the users to select any controller and change its parameters according to the different conditions under loaded and unloaded scenarios.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am very happy to have this Special Issue of the journal Energies on the topic of Design and Control of Electrical Motor Drives published. Electrical motor drives are widely used in the industry, automation, transportation, and home appliances. Indeed, rolling mills, machine tools, high-speed trains, subway systems, elevators, electric vehicles, air conditioners, all depend on electrical motor drives. However, the production of effective and practical motors and drives requires flexibility in the regulation of current, torque, flux, acceleration, position, and speed. Without proper modeling, drive, and control, these motor drive systems cannot function effectively. To address these issues, we need to focus on the design, modeling, drive, and control of different types of motors, such as induction motors, permanent magnet synchronous motors, brushless DC motors, DC motors, synchronous reluctance motors, switched reluctance motors, flux-switching motors, linear motors, and step motors. Therefore, relevant research topics in this field of study include modeling electrical motor drives, both in transient and in steady-state, and designing control methods based on novel control strategies (e.g., PI controllers, fuzzy logic controllers, neural network controllers, predictive controllers, adaptive controllers, nonlinear controllers, etc.), with particular attention to transient responses, load disturbances, fault tolerance, and multi-motor drive techniques. This SI include original contributions regarding recent developments and ideas in motor design, motor drive, and motor control. The topics include motor design, field-oriented control, torque control, reliability improvement, advanced controllers for motor drive systems, DSP-based sensorless motor drive systems, high-performance motor drive systems, high-efficiency motor drive systems, and practical applications of motor drive systems. I want to sincerely thank authors, reviewers, and staff members for their time and efforts.
