Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with a number of contentious issues in Chinese management as China emerges as a global economic player, with a greater role in international business during a global economic crisis. This step is in tandem with an economically driven foreign policy. Since the 1980s, Chinese management while still in transition, has benefited from an infusion of capital, technology and managerial expertise through inward direct investment via joint and wholly-owned foreign ventures. As the so-called 'workshop of the world', China and its exports, especially labour-intensive goods, face protectionism in the United States and the European Union. To circumvent these barriers, the Chinese leaders are emphasising domestic consumption, itself dependent on rising personal income levels and an improved national social insurance system, and a move to high-tech products, themselves requiring indigenous innovation. The creation of a knowledge economy, in addition to outward investment in manufacturing, could lead to a distinctive independent style of Chinese management. Simultaneously, China’s participation in intra-regional trade underlines the nation’s role in Asian regional business networks. Such developments in turn present a challenge to Western and global business. This book was published as a special issue of Asia Pacific Business Review.

Book excerpt: Despite the dynamic growth of its economy over the last 20 years, China still has a long way to go to catch up with Japan. In commercial and technological terms, Japan is still the dominant economy in East Asia and is still the leading source of product, production and management innovations in the region, especially in the automotive and electronic industries. However, China is closing the gap year by year. The development of bilateral foreign trade, the increase of Japanese FDI and ODA towards China, and intensified financial and technical co-operation illustrate the considerable potential for mutually profitable business. The Chinese market is opening up and Chinese products are increasingly gaining competitiveness in world markets, threatening the incumbent Japanese firms. Japanese and Chinese companies face each other across a changing competitive environment, which is posing new challenges to corporate and business strategies. Within the context of these developments this book looks from different perspectives at how Japanese companies are reacting to the challenges and opportunities offered by China.

Book excerpt: This edited volume first considers the economic background of the recent changes in HRM in the People's Republic of China from 1978 to the present day, exploring the change from a command economy to a more market-led one. It then goes on to look at the demise of so-called 'iron rice bowl' policy once dominated by a Soviet-inspired Personnel Management model to one now characterized by possibly Japanese, as well as Western-influenced HRM, albeit with what are widely described as 'Chinese characteristics'. Finally, it concludes with a comparative analysis of the contributions in the book on China vis-a-vis an appraisal of these with the national HRM systems of Japan and South Korea. This volume was previously published as a special issue of the International Journal of Human Resource Management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the experiences of foreign employees working in Japanese firms, this book identifies the trends and realities facing both expatriates and firms in the current landscape of the Japanese labour market. By utilising interview data from both expatriates and Japanese HR staff, this study identifies the fact that self-initiated expatriates often do not remain in Japanese firms for long and highlights the main factors that influence their decisions to leave; including difficulty adjusting to Japan’s lifetime employment system, seniority-based pay, and the prevalence of unpaid overtime. The book reveals that whilst Japanese firms are adjusting to improve the retention of foreign employees, there remains a clear expectation gap between the two sides. Moreover, it outlines further potential adjustments that could be implemented to reduce the turnover rate of expatriates and create a more harmonious workplace both for expatriates and for local employees. This is an urgent challenge for Japan as it faces labour shortages. Featuring an in-depth exploration of first-hand experiences from direct testimonies of expatriates in Japanese firms, this book will be a valuable resource for academics and students of Japanese studies, human resource management, and organisation studies.

Book excerpt: Acclaim for the first edition: 'Handbook of Research in International Human Resource Management represents a welcome contribution to IHRM literature and will be required readings for both novices and veteran researchers.' – Dana B. Minbaeva, British Journal of Industrial Relations '. . . a rich array of contributors including some of the biggest names in the field.' – Roger Bell, Delta Intercultural Academy The second edition of this Handbook provides up-to-date insight into ground-breaking research on international human resource issues today. These issues are faced by multinational companies which can be as small as one person with a computer and Internet connection or as large as a medium-sized country. Written by the field's most distinguished researchers, the book will stimulate thought for new research and provide a glimpse of where we have been and where we are going. The book explores issues such as the importance of linking IHRM activities to organizational strategy and culture; talent management; staffing; performance management; leadership development; diversity management; international assignment and mobility issues; and the role of IHRM in the management of global teams and cross-border joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions. The Handbook illustrates that IHRM research is both theoretically deep and eclectic. Drawing upon a range of paradigms and perspectives this compendium will prove invaluable for HRM scholars, doctoral students, and others interested in IHRM research.

Book excerpt: The authors explore the degree to which Chinese multinationals have a distinctive 'Chinese' approach to human resource management, in the same way as large Japanese companies are widely regarded as having a special Japanese approach. Based on extensive original research in the subsidiaries of Chinese multinationals outside China, the book examines a wide range of issues related to this key question including the evolution of human resource management in Chinese companies, the internationalization of Chinese business, recruitment and selection, rewards and compensation, performance appraisal, strategic integration, and employee relations. Shen and Edwards give a detailed account of the international human resource management of Chinese multinational enterprises; a topic of increasing significance in understanding global economic affairs.
