Book excerpt: The first edition of Theory of Rank Tests (1967) has been the precursor to a unified and theoretically motivated treatise of the basic theory of tests based on ranks of the sample observations. For more than 25 years, it helped raise a generation of statisticians in cultivating their theoretical research in this fertile area, as well as in using these tools in their application oriented research. The present edition not only aims to revive this classical text by updating the findings but also by incorporating several other important areas which were either not properly developed before 1965 or have gone through an evolutionary development during the past 30 years. This edition therefore aims to fulfill the needs of academic as well as professional statisticians who want to pursue nonparametrics in their academic projects, consultation, and applied research works. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to investigate the asymptotic behaviour of certain (conditional) rank tests for comparative experiments proposed by Hodges and Lehmann (1962), and their extensions and variations. The results obtained in this thesis are extensions of the results of Mehra and Sarangi (1965) (where the case of complete designs was discussed) to the case of balanced and partially balanced incomplete block designs. The methods employed are based on certain properties of the U-statistics derived by Hoeffding (1948). In Chapter I, a brief resume of the relevant earlier work has been given and the test proposed by Hodges and Lehmann described. In Chapter II, a simplified large sample version of this test is discussed, which reduces its application to reading the critical value from the chi-square tables. In Chapter III, the asymptotic distribution of the test statistic, under a sequence of alternatives approaching the null hypothesis has been found to follow a non-central chi-square law. This helps us to study the power properties and the Pitman efficiency of the test statistics in Chapter IV. Explicit numerical evaluations of the expressions for asymptotic efficiency, which has been limited to the normal form of the parent distribution, indicates a rather high degree of efficiency of the test. Chapters IV and V contain several remarks that follow from the results of our investigation, including a useful lower bound for the asymptotic efficiency of the investigated test relative to the classical F-test. Further investigations that will throw more light on our present findings have been suggested at suitable places.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probability and Mathematical Statistics, Volume 26: Sequential Statistical Procedures provides information pertinent to the sequential procedures that are concerned with statistical analysis of data. This book discusses the fundamental aspects of sequential estimation. Organized into four chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the essential feature of sequential procedure. This text then examines the sequential probability ratio test procedure and provides a method of constructing a most powerful test for a simple hypothesis versus simple alternative-testing problem. Other chapters consider the problem of testing a composite hypothesis against a composite alternative. This book discusses as well the theory of sequential tests that is appropriate for distinguishing between two simple or composite hypotheses. The final chapter deals with the theory of sequential estimation. This book is a valuable resource for graduate students, research workers, and users of sequential procedures.

Book excerpt: Professor Puri is one of the most versatile and prolific researchers in the world in mathematical statistics. His research areas include nonparametric statistics, order statistics, limit theory under mixing, time series, splines, tests of normality, generalized inverses of matrices and related topics, stochastic processes, statistics of directional data, random sets, and fuzzy sets and fuzzy measures. His fundamental contributions in developing new rank-based methods and precise evaluation of the standard procedures, asymptotic expansions of distributions of rank statistics, as well as large deviation results concerning them, span such areas as analysis of variance, analysis of covariance, multivariate analysis, and time series, to mention a few. His in-depth analysis has resulted in pioneering research contributions to prominent journals that have substantial impact on current research. This book together with the other two volumes (Volume 2: Probability Theory and Extreme Value Theory; Volume 3: Time Series, Fuzzy Analysis and Miscellaneous Topics), are a concerted effort to make his research works easily available to the research community. The sheer volume of the research output by him and his collaborators, coupled with the broad spectrum of the subject matters investigated, and the great number of outlets where the papers were published, attach special significance in making these works easily accessible. The papers selected for inclusion in this work have been classified into three volumes each consisting of several parts. All three volumes carry a final part consisting of the contents of the other two, as well as the complete list of Professor Puri's publications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces advanced undergraduate, graduate students and practitioners to statistical methods for ranking data. An important aspect of nonparametric statistics is oriented towards the use of ranking data. Rank correlation is defined through the notion of distance functions and the notion of compatibility is introduced to deal with incomplete data. Ranking data are also modeled using a variety of modern tools such as CART, MCMC, EM algorithm and factor analysis. This book deals with statistical methods used for analyzing such data and provides a novel and unifying approach for hypotheses testing. The techniques described in the book are illustrated with examples and the statistical software is provided on the authors’ website.
