Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Language and Dialect of the Later Old English Poetry Only in the case of the certain works of Cynewulf, I have tried by comparing the results yielded by each poem, and by considering the rhymes of which he made occasional use, to find some hypothesis which will account for the somewhat conflicting evidence concerning his native dialect. The following is a list of the poems I have investigated, followed in each case by the abbreviation which I have used. This book was released on 2015 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Dialects From the Eighth Century to the Present Day, Vol. 1 The following brief sketch is an attempt to present, in a popular form, the history of our English dialects, from the eighth century to the present day. The evidence, which is necessarily somewhat imperfect, goes to show that the older dialects appear to have been few in number, each being tolerably uniform over a wide area; and that the rather numerous dialects of the present day were gradually developed by the breaking up of the older groups into subdialects. This is especially true of the old Northumbrian dialect, in which the speech of Aberdeen was hardly distinguishable from that of Yorkshire, down to the end of the fourteenth century; soon after which date, the use of it for literary purposes survived in Scotland only. The chief literary dialect, in the earliest period, was Northumbrian or "Anglian," down to the middle of the ninth century. Book Synopsis The English Dialect Grammar by : Joseph Wright
Download or read book The English Dialect Grammar written by Joseph Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Dialect Grammar: Comprising the Dialects of England, of the Shetland and Orkney Islands, and of Those Parts of Scotland, Ireland and Wales Where English Is Habitually Spoken In the treatment of the native element contained in the grammar, I have generally started out from Old English, which in the present state of Middle English scholarship is the only satisfactory plan. The dialects prove conclusively that many vowel sounds, which are generally supposed to have fallen together in Middle English, were in reality kept apart, and have remained so in some dialects to the present day. In the treatment of the French element I have in most cases started out from the present pronunciation of literary English, because the French words have come into the dialects at various periodsand through various channels. When'the vowels in the French words have had the same develop ment in the dialects as those in the native words, a cross-reference is given to the paragraph where the corresponding development is treated in detail. I have not here attempted to trace the various stages of development of the consonant and vowel sounds in passing from Old English to the modern dialects, as it is my intention to treat the subject fully in an entirely different book bearing upon the philology of the English tongue, in which I shall also endeavour to show the light thrown by the dialects on the historical development of literary English.
