Bickel’s major papers, along with comments on their novelty and impact on the subsequent development of statistics as a discipline. Each of the eight parts concerns a particular area of research and provides new commentary by experts in the area. The parts range from Rank-Based Nonparametrics to Function Estimation and Bootstrap Resampling. Peter’s amazing career encompasses the majority of statistical developments in the last half-century or about about half of the entire history of the systematic development of statistics. This volume shares insights on these exciting statistical developments with future generations of statisticians. The compilation of supporting material about Peter’s life and work help readers understand the environment under which his research was conducted. The material will also inspire readers in their own research-based pursuits. This volume includes new photos of Peter Bickel, his biography, publication list, and a list of his students. These give the reader a more complete picture of Peter Bickel as a teacher, a friend, a colleague, and a family man.

Book excerpt: The interest towards Functional and Operatorial Statistics, and, more in general, towards infinite-dimensional statistics has dramatically increased in the statistical community and in many other applied scientific areas where people faces functional data. This volume collects the works selected and presented at the Third Edition of the International Workshop on Functional and Operatorial Statistics held in Stresa, Italy, from the 19th to the 21st of June 2014 (IWFOS’2014). The meeting represents an opportunity of bringing together leading researchers active on these topics both for what concerns theoretical aspects and a wide range of applications in various fields. To promote collaborations with other important strictly related areas of infinite-dimensional Statistics, such as High Dimensional Statistics and Model Selection Procedures, this book hosts works in the latter research subjects too.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging technologies generate data sets of increased size and complexity that require new or updated statistical inferential methods and scalable, reproducible software. These data sets often involve measurements of a continuous underlying process, and benefit from a functional data perspective. Functional Data Analysis with R presents many ideas for handling functional data including dimension reduction techniques, smoothing, functional regression, structured decompositions of curves, and clustering. The idea is for the reader to be able to immediately reproduce the results in the book, implement these methods, and potentially design new methods and software that may be inspired by these approaches. Features: Functional regression models receive a modern treatment that allows extensions to many practical scenarios and development of state-of-the-art software. The connection between functional regression, penalized smoothing, and mixed effects models is used as the cornerstone for inference. Multilevel, longitudinal, and structured functional data are discussed with emphasis on emerging functional data structures. Methods for clustering functional data before and after smoothing are discussed. Multiple new functional data sets with dense and sparse sampling designs from various application areas are presented, including the NHANES linked accelerometry and mortality data, COVID-19 mortality data, CD4 counts data, and the CONTENT child growth study. Step-by-step software implementations are included, along with a supplementary website (www.FunctionalDataAnalysis.com) featuring software, data, and tutorials. More than 100 plots for visualization of functional data are presented. Functional Data Analysis with R is primarily aimed at undergraduate, master's, and PhD students, as well as data scientists and researchers working on functional data analysis. The book can be read at different levels and combines state-of-the-art software, methods, and inference. It can be used for self-learning, teaching, and research, and will particularly appeal to anyone who is interested in practical methods for hands-on, problem-forward functional data analysis. The reader should have some basic coding experience, but expertise in R is not required.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the state-of-the art of the present understanding of avalanche phenomena in both functional materials and geophysics. The main emphasis of the book is analyzing these apparently different problems within the common perspective of out-of-equilibrium phenomena displaying spatial and temporal complexity that occur in a broad range of scales. Many systems, when subjected to an external force, respond intermittently in the form of avalanches that often span over a wide range of sizes, energies and durations. This is often related to a class of critical behavior characterized by the absence of characteristic scales. Typical examples are magnetization processes, plastic deformation and failure occuring in functional materials. These phenomena share many similarities with seismicity arising from the earth crust failure due to stresses that originate from plate tectonics.

This book was released on 2019-06-28 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biological basis of physiological signals is incredibly complex. While many types of research certainly appreciate molecular, cellular and systems approach to unravel overall biological complexity, in the recent decades the interest for mathematical and computational characterization of structural and functional basis underlying biological phenomena gain wide popularity among scientists. Nowadays, we witnessed wide range applications of nonlinear quantitative analysis that produced measures such as fractal dimension, power-law scaling, Hurst exponent, Lyapunov exponent, approximate entropy, sample entropy, Lempel–Ziv complexity, as well as other metrics for predictions of onset and progression of many pathological conditions, especially in the central nervous systems (CNS). In this Research Topic, we seek to bring together the recent practical and theoretical advances in the development and application of nonlinear methods or narrower fractal-based methods for characterizing the complex physiological systems at multiple levels of the organization. We will discuss the use of various complexity measures and appropriate parameters for characterizing the variety of physiological signals up to the systems level. There are multiple aims in this topic. The recent advancement in the application of nonlinear methods for both normal and pathological physiological conditions is the first. The second aim is to emphasize the more recent successful attempt to apply these methods across animal species. Finally, a comprehensive understanding of advantages and disadvantages of each method, especially between its mathematical assumptions and real-world applicability, can help to find out what is at stake regarding the above aims and to direct us toward the more fruitful application of nonlinear measures and statistics in physiology and biology in general.
